Chapter 3 - A glimpse of the possible future

"The charge is 250V.", the nurse informed.

" Okay." The doctor rubbed the defibrillator with adhesive gel and said, "3, 2, 1, ready, go!" and then the doctor stroked the defibrillator on her chest. No response.

"Increase the charge nurse." the doctor ordered.

It seems everyone in the operation room was restless trying to get a beat out of the person who was just lying on the bed there.

"The charge is 500V." the nurse informed.

"Got it!" The doctor rubbed the defibrillator again with gel and stroked it on her chest. No response.

"Increase it!" The doctor shouted.

The only nurse among the chaos who noticed the constant beep on the EKG said, "Sir, we lost her."

The doctor glanced at the heartbeat monitor and stopped in his tracks. The doctor removed his mask and released an annoyed exhale of breath and got out of the room while the patient laid down there and the nurses just statued at their places.

The doctor saw a few people standing close to one other outside the operation room and seemed worried. He got to them and said when they all looked at him,

"Sorry, but we lost Sarah."

After the doctor spread the inauspicious news, everyone seemed relieved instead of sad. Sarah's mother said with a breath of relief and a smile, "Finally!"

That was the last thing I had seen before Sheryl had nudged me; to wake me up. I had woke up from my disastrous dream.

"You slept?" Sheryl asked in a disapproving manner.

I tried to lie but couldn't due to the dream. But was that it? Just a dream? Who's to say that my demise won't be a relief for everyone? Won't it be for my mother who has to be conscious 24/7 for her daughter? Or for my father who has to work hard and earn extra more for her daughter's treatment? Or for my siblings who have been deprived of most of the facilities due to a shortage of money? Won't it be a relief for Sheryl who has to be with me even if she doesn't want to?

"Hey, where did you go?" Sheryl asked and this awakened me from my deep pit of thoughts.

I blinked a few times, "Who told you to stream Work It?" I asked amusingly.

"Ok, granted that it was the most cleachè movie ever but we both fumed in fire after finishing sex education and this was the only movie which seemed appealing in the suggestions."

"We could've watched 10 things again."

"I think if we watch that movie one more time, Kat would add us to her list." She sputtered in laughter. And then I joined.

"So, are you ready?" I asked after laughing.

"Ready for what?" Sheryl asked.

"To read another tweet, of course!" I replied loudly and cheerfully.

"The second one?" Sheryl asked.

"Yes."

"Okay," Sheryl said that and opened Twitter. Within a few seconds, Sheryl said, "Okay, here we go.

'I wonder from the tons of likes I have received in my last confession, one of them could be the girl with the red purse. That girl who was laughing while talking to her phone. Be it the aid of my glasses or the dark, yet bright day but my dry soon-to-be-wet eyes noticed the dried tear on her right cheek.

Why it ached me to even just think that she was hurt? Maybe because she is now my only source of happiness? Or that I could never imagine a saddened face instead of her smile?

Now when I am thinking about it, I was about to go talk to her before she met her unfortunate fate. And within a few seconds, my face has been transitioned as sad; failed, happy; hopeful, and shattered. This was all because of that girl with the red purse which I hope to see one more time with its magnificent owner.

To,

The unknown girl with the red purse
