4pm, I opened my phone and updated our family's current status with everyone and they replied back. I then asked if anyone knew how the zombies behaved at night but no one knows. They did what I advised them to do, sleep during the entire evening. This made me slap my own forehead, I have been feeding everyone information. All the things they know about the zombies came from me. If I didn't know, how in the world they would? If only I can browse the internet then it would have been easier, sadly I can't, none of us in this household can. None of us expected an outbreak so no one thought of loading our sim cards.
6pm I prepared my things; padlock key duplicate, car keys, flashlight, first aid, and weapons. My weapons include only two things, a short and long-range: SPE knife and the improved chair leg. I then prepared some armor with layers of cardboards on my forearms and legs and lots and lots of tapes; scotch tape, masking tape, electrical tape, packing tape. Basically, I used up our tape supply. I wore my thickest hoodie and thickest loose jogging pants. Also wore light sneakers but wore thick socks. I don't care if I looked like a Popeye-burglar in my outfit but it's better to be ready than not.
Before I left, I performed some tests on the zombies. I already knew they react to sound but I need to know if they react to other things during night time. I flashed them my light, slight response; I light up a lighter and place it close to one of the zombies to see if they react to heat, also slight response; They respond to all of the things I did but their movements are so stiff. I tried hurting one of them, it didn't care. Of course, it wouldn't care, it seems they have long lost the ability to feel pain. I then killed one down and it didn't show any resistance, it died just like that. This is so weird, they are like plants during the darkness of night.
7pm, it should be good for me to leave now. I told Lolu to lock the padlock quickly after I step out of the gate. I would be lying if I say I'm not scared. I can feel butterflies in my stomach. I don't know what I have been missing with all this time of hiding.
I unlocked the padlock and took a deep breath before opening the gate. I clicked the remote of the car and heard a click that tells me I have unlocked it. Before I stepped out of the gate I stopped and turned to Lolu and looked at him dead in the eye.
"Take care of mom while I'm gone."
"Of course I will now go before things get bad."
I finally stepped out of our gate. I run quickly to the car which is not very far, just across the street. I swiftly opened the car door to the driver's seat, I entered the car and slams the door shut. I'm not gonna lie, I felt like a kid who shuts the light switch off then quickly runs and jumps on the bed. I took quick and heavy breaths before I could recollect myself back. When I have returned my composure, I put the car key on its slot and switched it, the engine roared. I was happy to see that it didn't get stuck-up. The gas is not full but is more than half, it is more than enough to get to Frodery's house and back.
"Alright, time to roll," I then proceed to drive the car at a high speed. And as I go, I hit every stiff undead that blocks my way.
I drove my way to my oldest brother's house. It was just a 3-minute drive because there was no other car other than the one I'm using now. When I arrived at their place, I saw Frodery peek from their bedroom window, he must have heard the car. I didn't turn off the car engine but I turned the headlights off. I waited for them in the car when I started to hear some noise coming our way...like a stampede of sorts? I cannot trust my very own eyes as I have poor vision, especially at night. I turned the lights up and was shocked to see a herd of zombie dogs running our way. At that exact moment, Frodery and his household finally emerged from their house.
"Hurry! Zombie dogs incoming!" I screamed.
They all looked at where the car is facing and they saw it too. Frodery dragged all of their bags like they were filled only with feathers. The rest of his family; his wife Tema, their son and firstborn child Vol, and Telly their daughter and youngest, all jumped in the passenger seats. Frodery sat a the back with their belongings.
"All settled?" I asked.
"Hit it Pheene!" said Frodery.
I then proceed to drive once more. I collided with the zombie dogs as I do. Some dogs were sent flying while some were squashed under the wheels. I had kept a calm demeanor but I swear, everyone in the car with me can hear my heart pounding. My blood is pumped with adrenaline and noradrenaline. It's something that my body is used to. This surge of hormones has always been an asset of mine, a dangerous asset that might kill me.
I maneuver from street to street but the dogs were able to keep up. This is very alarming because I'm driving constantly on 3rd gear and occasionally shifting to 4th, these dogs are running within 40-60 kilometers per hour. I can't lead them back home, I need to get rid of them.
One of my passengers, Telly, started to cry. She's crying to her mom because she was scared. I understand why a 9-year-old girl would freak out and break down to tears with what's happening. It's already terrifying to be chased around by a dog, what more a flock that looks like ragged hyenas.
I realized that running away from these bitches is futile. I had to change and step up my game, instead of escaping, I will face them head-on.
"Everyone, hold on tight! This is going to be one heck of roadkill..."
"What?!" Tema cried.
I sharply turned the car around that brought the tires to screech. The car is now facing the undead and I am ready to hit on the gas. Frodery noticed what I was about to do and he does not like it.
"What the hell?! Pheene! Are you crazy?! Are you planning to kill us all?!"
I did not answer him. I am ready and I hit the gas. The car nearly flew away. All of my passengers were sent back. Telly cried louder as she grew even more afraid. I can't really see them at the back but I can hear Tema desperately trying to calm their little girl down. Once again, we collided with the undead dogs. The dogs hitting the car actually had their heads exploding, splattering blood all over the car. I did not stop though, I just turned the wipers on and drove even faster until I reach the end of the herd.
After taking most of the dogs down, I proceed to drive back home. I did not slow the car down until we reach our parents' house. I don't want to take any chances, most households had at least one dog. I can't afford to risk it.
A few minutes pass, we finally arrived home. I told Lolu to wait for us and avoid going to sleep. He should have heard the sound of the car engine but no one has come out to unlock the gate. This got me mad but I have to put that aside for now, we need to get in the house fast.
I jumped out of the car and run-up to the gate. I unlocked the padlock with my duplicate key and opened the gate. I called on to Tema and the kids to get inside the house. The three got off the car and I readied the chair leg. Frodery is carrying up all their belongings when I saw what appears to be a zombified cat. The cat looked like a spartan with all of its bloody wounds. The thing is preparing to pounce at Frodery but because I'm heavily pumped with hormones, I was able to strike the cat dead mid-air at one swing. I kept Frodery covered up until he made it in the gate. And after him, I locked the padlock and I helped them all in the house.
