Chereads / Reforming A Crumbling World / Chapter 7 - Chapter 7

Chapter 7 - Chapter 7

I have to connect to Etil somehow. She simply asked that I pick them up. But their family own a car, why can't her dad or her brothers just drive? She and Kaston, her younger brother, can drive. Only Jon, her older brother and their Mom don't drive in their household. I thought of calling Etil but I just remembered I don't have load. That leaves data connection, I can send her a message in messenger and that's exactly what I did, I sent her a text message.

"Hey, I'm here. I can't enter..."

After I sent the message, instantly she read it. I looked at their front door and saw her emerge from there. She looked messy with splatters of what looks like paint...but I'm no fool to think that's just paint, something sinister has happened in there. Following her was her Mom and she looked disturbed. I got down from the car and kept it unlocked. From the sound of it, it seems like Etil is unlocking their gate. She then opened their gate.

"There's something I need to tend to inside, do you mind looking after Mama for me?"

Oh dear God, Etil looks like she just went on a killing spree. Her hands and her clothes are all covered in blood. I can only nod at her request as I stood there in horror.

"Thanks."

I nodded and assisted Aunty to the car. But Aunty jolted me away, she's shaking in fright.

"Aunty it's alright, don't be scared."

I offered my hand and she slowly reached for it. I guided her to the car. I opened the door to the passenger seat at the back and closed the door. Because of the loud sound of car door closing, I swear I heard russling sound from the tall grass right accross the street from their house. I took the metal arnis and prepare for the worst. From the tall grass came out multiple zombies. My eyes widen with them slowly making an appearance. Aunt Mal caught a sight of the zombies and she screamed. Her scream despite less audible because she's inside the car had prompted the zombies to charge. I'm not a fool to face off such numbers alone. I quickly run to the car's driver seat. If shit goes out of hand I'm ready to flee. But then I just remembered, I can't leave the person I came here for.

"Etil! Where the fuck are you?!" I shouted to the house.

I waited for her to show up or at least a response but got none. Then Aunt Mel started crying out for us to leave.

"Pheene, let's go now! We might die here if we don't leave!"

"But Aunt Mel, your daughter's still inside!"

"Forget about that murderer, let's just go! I don't want to die yet!"

As she said that, I could only look at her with disbelief. What did she mean by Etil being a murderer?

"What did you just say about Etil?"

"That woman is a murderer! She killed her father and her brothers in cold blood so let's just go!" she kept on pleading.

It all made sense now why the guys haven't got out yet. I closed the door and locked the car. I then ran inside their house and was shocked. Dead bodies lay everywhere; humans and animals. All human corpses were male, Etil's father and brothers. The animals that lay dead are all their family's pet dogs. In the center of the living room is Etil standing on a chair. Her hands clasped on a noose tied on their ceiling fan. It's obvious now what she really meant by looking after her mom earlier. My body moved on its own at lightning speed. Before she could wear the rope around her neck and hang herself, I knocked her down. She fell on the floor, but just like me, she did not stay down. She tried to punch me. This woman is heavily pumped with adrenaline. It took a lot of effort before I succesfully restrained her. I held her down firmly but she kept struggling.

"Get off of me!"

"And what, you'll hang yourself?! What are you? A stupid weakling?!"

"Yes!"

I looked at her in disbelief. Seeing my reaction she retorted once more.

"Yes! I'm a stupid weakling because I'm not you, Pheene!" she screamed to my face.

"I'm a stupid weakling because I'm not you, Pheene..." She repeated now with tears in her eyes.

I can feel her muscles relaxing under my grip. I got off of Etil and stood up while she stayed down on the floor. She moved her arms and covered her face with her hands. I can tell she's sobbing by the sound of her sniffing. As she cries I heard a faint scream from the outside. This alerted both Etil and me. I grabbed the metal arnis on the floor and then I pulled the woman up.

"Keep the drama for later, for now we gotta go!" I ordered.

I was at the door when I noticed she hadn't got on her feet.

"What now?! Can't you hear your mom outside?!"

"Just leave me, I deserve to die after what I have done..."

Now this woman's pissing me off. This situation calls for tough love. I run back to her and carried her up on my shoulder. She felt really light, my work out payed off. But as I lift her she struggled to set herself free from my grasp.

"Let me go woman! I wanted to die!"

"If you wanted to die that bad then you shouldn't have asked me to pick you up!"

That made her stopped struggling. I'm hoping that had knocked some sense into her.

"Pheene, let me down...Please..." she said calmly.

"Give me a good reason to do that."

"I'll go get a weapon..."

I smirked and put her down.

"Be back quickly." I said.

She nodded and I went outside. When I got out, I saw the car surrounded by the undead. Aunt Mel's still in the car crying and screaming for help. She doesn't know she's making things worse for her. I can't face off with that much zombies, that would be suicide. I need to find a way to distract those zombies into leaving the car. Just as I think of a way, Etil finally came out of their house but we're still inside their garage. She's all covered up in thick layers of jacket and is holding a frying pan.

"What?" asked Etil.

"We need a distraction." I said pointing at the car.

"What do we do then?"

"You guys have a huge ass radio right?"

"Yeah."

"We can use that."

"How?"

"Does it have a remote?"

"Yeah."

"I have an idea." I grinned from ear to ear.

"What?" she looked confused.

"We throw it from your backyard and you play it via remote mid-air."

"What if it breaks when it hits the ground?"

"We move quickly, duh."

"Will it work? I'm a little doubtful. Radio's not tiny, it might hit the ground quicker."

Etil's argument made sense.

"Well, any ideas?"

"The guys are dead, your idea gave me an idea." she smiled like how Jimmy Neutron would say "brain blast!"

"What is it?"

"How about instead of the radio, we use a phone?"

"I'll throw the phone and you will call it mid air?"

"Yes!"

Etil went back inside their house and came out with two phones; Kaston and Jon's phone. She gave me Kaston's phone to throw and she readies Jon's. I stood at the farthest corner of their backyard that faces the street. I prepared my stunts similar to an athlete about to throw the a ball. I then stepped my left foot forward, put all my body's strength in my right hand, and finally threw the phone away. After throwing the phone, I crouched down and Etil hits the call button. The thrown phone received the call and it rang loudly. Etil had set the phone to outdoor mode making it ring twice louder even at normal full volume. The ringtone of the phone had taken the attention of most of the zombies surrounding the car. More than half of the herd went to the direction of the phone. Before the phone hits the ground and when the zombies were far enough, Etil and I took the chance and ran outside their gate. There were few zombies left but we were able to take them down. I unlocked the car with the remote and we finally got in the car. Etil's mom did not want get anywhere near her so my friend transfered to the first seat right next to me. When we have finally settled, I quickly inserted the key to the slot and turns it. Upon turning the key, the engine roared. The sound of the car engine caught the attention of the zombies once more and they ran towards the car. It's safe to assume that the phone had already landed on the ground and it is now broken. I did not look back and I started driving away.
