Ella slowly opened her eyes as the rays of the sun came peaking in through the window. She was lying in bed and saw a nurse tidying an area. Was it all a dream? The boy wasn't physically there but she knew what she saw and believed that it wasnt a dream. She then remembered his attempt at suicide and she shot up from the bed, but then felt a sudden drain in energy.
The nurse rushed over to her helping her lie back down and get comfortable. It could have been a dream or an illusion, either way, she wasn't expecting to see the boy again. She fell back into a deep sleep as if to forget that actually happened.
A few hours later the sky was dyed orange as the sun began to set. Ella woke up feeling the breeze from the opened window. She sat up slowly from the bed and looked at the window. She saw the window was only half open and a lunch tray sitting beside her bed. She couldn't eat after what she felt the previous night. She didn't know what to do if that happened again, if the boy came back he was just as transparent as she remembered him to be.
She sat up and took the tray from the table, knowing that she had to satisfy her stomach sooner or later. She began eating brioche's, she then turned around and immediately froze, the brioche still in her mouth. It was the boy from yesterday. He stared at her not saying a word. She swallowed her brioche forcefully as if choking down a surprised scream and hurriedly sat properly to actually talk to him in a more formal way.
"So you can see me." He said with a more confident tone noticing her lack of movement since she made eye contact with him.
"U-um..." She opened her mouth to talk but she didn't know what to say, though she had to say something. "I-i saw you yesterday. What are you doing here? This is my room." She began questioning him with intensity. "Are you just a figment of my imagination because yesterday I couldn't touch you but you were still there so-" She rambled on but then got interrupted by the boy.
"Could you please be quiet?" He said with a painful expression. "I'm actually surprised you're not afraid of me. Most people would scream and make a fuss." He said. "You're a strange girl." He added.
"Excuse me, I am not strange-you're strange for popping up in my room whenever you want." She said offensively.
"I just had to make sure..." The boy muttered with pouty eyes.
"What do you mean by that?" Ella asked full of curiosity. The boy sighed a little before he spoke.
"I can't leave this hospital. It's the hospital where I died. I am a ghost as you can see." He said with stern eyes. Ella stared at him for a few seconds before replying.
"Then why have you only appeared in front of me now?" She asked plainly.
"Wait you're taking thins better than I thought!" The boy exclaimed in surprise.
"Well, did you want me to scream?" She said with a stern voice. The boy shook his head timidly seeing her sudden change in personality. "Then there's no problem."
"You really are strange." He said thoughtfully.
"But it seemed like you could leave yesterday when I tried to save you from jumping out the window." She retorted.
"That- it wasn't that I could leave! -But once I leave this hospital I will disappear forever. And since nobody could see anyway, I thought you were the same, I thought I should just disappear seeing as nobody will know anyway." He said glumly. "But... then- you tried to stop me and that made me think that you could see me. Seriously though, if you could see me you should have said so sooner." He said looking back at her with a sparkle in his eyes. "All you did today was sleep so I couldn't confirm anything."
"Wait you were watching me this whole time?!" Ella shrieked in embarrassment.
"Well, not the whole time but I didn't know when you'd wake up. Ghosts can't sleep so there was nothing else for me to do." He said casually.
"That's kind of creepy," Ella muttered thinking about it. "Wait... Ghosts can't sleep? Then what have you been doing this whole time?"
