Of course there could be no certainty about the number of surviving maroon spies. There could be many. There could be none left. It seemed that the court could not trust anyone anymore. It was agreed that all communication outside of the inner circle of the king-captain should be in a secret code cryptic enough that it would go unnoticed, and Ed could help with that, but even he had to admit that no secret language could save them if someone undesirable knew the key to it.
