Chereads / To Slay A Goddess / Chapter 18 - Unknown Mercenary

Chapter 18 - Unknown Mercenary

When Kellen finally reached the outer walls of the massive crumbling kingdom, he found that the old metal gate was closed.

In order to quickly pass by the wall, he searched for a crumbled section on it and climbed over it. As his feet touched down on the other side, Kellen heard the distant sound of weapons clashing in the distance beyond a forest that now greeted him.

"That sounds pretty lively! Wanna go check it out?" Asked Kellen which interrupted Osiris's historical monologue.

"Eh? Oh! Yes sure... Maybe we can learn some more of the time period and of our definite location then." Replied Osiris as he was knocked off from his lecture podium.

Kellen ran towards the bright yet dense forest and quickly made his way through the trees as he darted about in the direction of the increasing clashing sounds. After his body had transformed it was no longer a hassle or an exhausting venture for Kellen as he ran with an incredible speed non-stop.

Eventually, the distant sounds he had heard became increasingly louder until the sounds of all out war engulfed his ears. As he continued to rush through the forest, he suddenly found himself at the edge of a massive field beside the forest, and it was here that he discovered the shouting and clashing of weapons was originating.

"Who are these people?" Blankly asked Kellen as he stared at two surging armies of humans fiercely racing towards one another and engaging in a bloody dispute.

"I'm not sure either... They must be from some new kingdoms that emerged while we were in the void... Although one of them does seem familiar... Just goes to show how fast the rise and the fall of a kingdom can be..."

As Osiris muttered his last sentence a loud crackling sound began to emerge from the battlefield. Kellen looked towards where the sudden noise was coming from and widened his eyes.

A soldier, that looked like he was taken straight out from one of Kellen's history books from his old world, was rushing towards the opposite side's soldiers with a longsword in his hand. This image wouldn't have been surprising for Kellen if two things weren't apparent...

'A Roman soldier? And lightning?'

The soldier dressed like a Roman from ancient times was dashing towards the oncoming wave of enemies, and he continued to slaughter his foes with his longsword, which occasionally flashed out bright dangerous streaks of lightning.

Kellen was unsure which was more surprising to him but he hoped that one thing would be true.

'I wonder if the Roman uniform has any connections with those dumb Romans from the laboratory...'

He decided that just standing to the side and watching wouldn't help him learn anymore and raced off towards the raging battlefield in search of more answers. On the way he picked up a longsword off the ground that wasn't broken and made his way towards the strangely dressed soldier.

By using Soul Sense, it was easy for Kellen to evade the incoming waves of soldiers that he was pushing between in order to get to his target. On his left was a group of warriors that looked like they were from a fantasy or videogame while on Kellen's right was a group of warriors similarly dressed in Roman like uniforms.

As Kellen weaved his way through the madness that was unfolding in the clearing, he never unlocked his gaze from the Roman soldier that had lightning crackling on his sword.

'They all look just like the ancient warriors depicted in the history textbooks from my old world.' Thought Kellen in amazement as he dodged a spear that hurled passed his right shoulder.

Both sides began to withdraw from each other slowly which created a narrow channel of space in the center of the bloody battlefield. Kellen, who was in the thick of the fighting in the center utilized this opportunity to increase his approach towards the unique soldier.

The Roman like soldier soon noticed his quickly advancing figure and immediately assumed the worst.

'So the trash did hire some mercenaries...' Thought the soldier as he withdrew his blade crackling with lightning from the charred body of his currently fallen opponent.

The soldier readied himself again to prepare for an incoming attack but was surprised when he saw his opponent stop a few meters away from him without rushing any further.

'Looks like this one is smart... But he already made the wrong step by stepping on the opposing side of the battlefield!' Thought the soldier as he roared and rushed towards Kellen with his electric blade arcing over his shoulder.

'Shit... I should have expected this since it is a war and all...' Thought Kellen with slight regret after realizing his mistake in rushing.

He quickly drew his sword in an opposite motion to the soldier and countered the attack, but was surprised by the tremble in his hand after the contact.

'What! This prick can transfer the electric energy with just the contact of a sword!'

Kellen removed his trembling hand that received the shock from the sword and resumed his stance with only his remaining hand on his sword.

However, Kellen was not the only one who was shocked...

'What the hell! How can this person, who seems to be only eighteen, withstand my lightning? The others before him immediately dropped their weapons just after the first contact!' Thought the soldier as a smile began to arch on the corners of his mouth.

'This should be fun!' Both the soldier and Kellen thought.

A few more exchanges between blades rang out from the center of the battlefield with only a Roman soldier and unknown kid standing in the abandoned channel between the armies.

Neither opponent seemed to be exhausted after the exchanges and only weird smiles could be seen plastered on both their faces.

Kellen had prepared himself for the incoming shocks of electricity, but was able to withstand their little amount of force when comparing them to the shock therapy he repeatedly would receive from Gregory in the mind space.

"You're pretty good kid! Where are you from? You don't look like your from the other side... Are you a mercenary?" Said the soldier between the flashing exchanges of blades.

The previously clashing lines of soldiers watched the performance in the center with awe and the encouraging shouts along with stomps of anticipation from both sides made the ground begin to shake.

"I'm actually not from around here... What's with the uniform? I've never seen it before..." Replied Kellen between the exchange of blades and shouting from around them.

Suddenly, the clashing of blades paused as both opponents withdrew a few paces from each other to assess the other more thoroughly.

"Ha! Then why are you fighting along with the Glecians? It's a waste to let go of such talent to them... Why don't you join our Roman Empire instead?" Said the Roman soldier as he studied the stature of the kid a few paces away from himself.

'Osiris... What the hell does he mean by the Roman Empire? Were they also ruling here in Xystenia all this time?' Questioned Kellen.

'No... I'm not aware of any "Roman Empire" existing here before I left to train you in the mind space... I have heard of the Glacial Kingdom but they can be regarded as one of the minor kingdoms.' Replied Osiris who was just as perplexed.

"What's so great about your Roman Empire? I've never heard of it here before..." Said Kellen as he gazed at the strangely out of place looking Roman soldier after receiving no help from Osiris.

"What isn't great about it? We've been established here for at least eight hundred years and continue to expand our influence!" Replied the Roman soldier as if what he had heard from the weird kid must have been a joke.

With those lines, a lone soldier from the Glecians stepped out from their lines, who looked stronger than his comrades while wielding a large battle axe, retorted to the Roman soldier's statement.

"You stupid Roman dogs think your better than everyone else just because you have a couple of strong backers! Without the Legionnaire Gods you wouldn't even be more than a bunch of cowardly farmers still tilling the ground with your tongues!"

'Legionnaire Gods? What have we missed all this time? There wasn't a Roman Empire before I was in the void and he said they were established eight hundred years ago!' Shouted Kellen in exasperation towards Osiris.

'Relax kid... I told you I wasn't exactly sure how long we were gone for... We can't control the passing of time...' Replied Osiris weakly.

'What's the point of being a "god" when your still continuously restricted then? Aren't you always bragging about how powerful you are, but you just back off when it has to do with rules like time?' Thought Kellen with more annoyance.

He was sick of the restrictions and manipulations always imposed on him by those surrounding him throughout his life. When he discovered there were powerful entities like Osiris he began to see a beacon of hope for shacking off his shackles, but what was the point if he would only continue to be confined by other rules and people.

"Go hide behind your people like you always do "King" Yariv and await your demise by some so called "farmers" then." Snidely replied the Roman soldier as he nonchalantly flipped the face of his blade to the king, which sent an arcing bolt of electricity towards the man's feet.

The angered man only spit on the ground in response and took a step backwards reluctantly.

The Roman soldier then flipped his blade back towards his opponent.

"So what'll it be then kid?" Said the soldier as he lifted his chin.
