The sprinkler deposits were made of holy water. If it's a human this holy water has no effect on them except receiving blessings. However, for demons and devils, this is no worse than punishment.
There are some among the people in the station who cried out in pain and started smoking as if they were burning alive. These are some humans affected by miasma. They might be in pain because of the holy water but it will cleanse the filth within them.
The people in the control room already know the existence of contamination from a long time of fighting against the demons. Demon miasma will sometimes linger in the body of the human slowly corrupting them from within.
