Chereads / THE AWAKENING / Chapter 16 - Chapter 16

Chapter 16 - Chapter 16

Giorno walked confidently and steadily, straight to the mayor's office. The policemen who should take a scared man were a bit confused, no one who was summoned by the Mayor, in this way, would walk that calm.

The men stopped and opened the office door for Giorno, who entered immediately, behind him the door closed, leaving only four people in the room.

- Mr. Santoro, the mayor spoke to him, who with a serious expression was observing Giorno, next to him his infallible fiancee and sitting in front of him, Yumiko.

- Take a seat, I look forward to hearing what you have to say.

Giorno walked to the place and took a seat then said:

- At this point, there is no point in lying, so from now on I will only tell the truth.

Eliza, with a strong european accent and irrepressible rage, spoke to Giorno:

- And should we trust that this is not his first lie of the night?

- I do not ask you to trust or believe me, I will prove my words.

Eliza was going to refute what Giorno was about to say. However, the mayor stopped her, he really wanted to hear what he had to say, so Giorno continued.

- I murdered and robbed those men in the Latrine of the Cats, well that's something everyone already knows. However, although I got carried away, it was in self-defense, they attacked me first, I did not expect them to be so weak, as to die from such simple blows.

- Tell that to the judge

Eliza spoke, her arms crossed.

- I don't think I should tell you, because you won't betray me. Moreover, even if they did, nothing will happen. I lived for years near The Cat Latrine, do you think I don't know how things work there?

Yumiko looked at him confused, she really had no idea about the murders, nor that Giorno lived near that place. She looked at him trying not to remove her poker face, but her words made it more and more difficult to maintain that facade, Giorno continued.

- No matter what happens inside or even in the surroundings, nothing that has to do with that place will be considered a crime, in all my years living there, I have never seen a crime be investigated, or that someone received help from the police, so being betrayed is the part that worries me the least. In addition, these subjects in question were nothing more than murderers, rapists and thieves who deserved nothing less than death.

The Mayor looked noticeably more annoyed by Giorno's words. However, he spoke calmly.

- That is not decided by your Giorno.

- You're wrong, Mayor! In that place the strong decide, if the weak lives or dies, if not: why have you or your predecessors never interfered? Why have you never protected those who live there?

- Because nobody can intrude in that place.

The mayor replied, notably frustrated, adding:

- As much as you wanted to do something, that place is completely out of the reach of anyone.

- You are wrong about that too. I will destroy the Castle of the Dead Ladies and make the Cats' Latrine disappear, no matter that I must fill my hands with blood and flesh in the process.

- How pretentious! He can't even imagine how ridiculous his words are - Eliza replied.

The mayor raised a hand and Eliza was immediately silent.

- Why do you want to destroy that place?

- I have already said it, I have lived as an outcast for a long time, seeing atrocities as if they were something normal, perhaps the man that I was, a couple of days ago, did not care about those things. To see that the children were mutilated or worse, to collect alms, or that they abused all of us who lived there as they wanted, to the point of killing anyone who opposed a minimum of their whims.

As Giorno remembered those things, he could not help but remember the atrocities suffered by the different races of the other world, the feelings began to wallow in his chest and word, after word, his anger was increasing.

- The man I am today, he has already seen enough abuse in his life. If the strong rule over the weak, then I will become the strongest after the weak.

Eliza burst out laughing, hearing Giorno's words. However, with a glance the mayor silenced her, and then he said:

- His words from him are nothing more than the delusions of a deranged man, Mister de Santoro.

Giorno smiled and, as he stood up, looking the mayor to the eyes, he said:

- As promised, I will show you that I am not lying.

With his mental strength he said:

- Activate Frost Dagger spell casting.

Giorno didn't really know if it would work or not. He just let himself be carried away by the certainty that he worked, that and the myriad of feelings he had inside of him. When he said those words a couple of circles, with strange symbols, formed on his fingers turning in opposite directions, in just a blink, they created a beautiful ice knife.

Eliza wasted no time and attacked him in order to prevent him from using the weapon against the mayor. Giorno stepped away from the woman, then tossed the dagger to the ground.

On impacting the ground, the dagger broke like thin glass. However, the entire room froze in just seconds, hitting everyone present with an extreme temperature change from one moment to another and the ice in just an instant froze the entire city hall and its gardens.

Giorno had not calculated that result. In the other world "Frozen Dagger", it was an ice spell that would only serve to make a small skating rink. Also, it only froze inert things, in other words, it was one of the weakest ice spells, why was it so powerful now?

Giorno felt dizzy and nauseated. He knew that feeling, it was what happened to him when he ran out of magic power. He tried to turn where Yumiko was, but before he completely turned around everything went black. And he fell to the frozen ground.

The mayor and Eliza, shivering with cold, gazed in astonishment at the walls, the desk, all the furniture in the place were completely frozen, as if it were an ice hotel, then they looked at where Giorno and Yumiko were lying helping him, they couldn't understand what had happened and how.

A loud knock hit the office door, apparently the ice had sealed it, only a couple of minutes had passed, since everything froze, and there was already a response from outside the office, there was no doubt about the efficiency of those who they surrounded the mayor.

Yumiko made sure Giorno was alive, outside sirens began to sound and confused screams were heard. Everything was a great disaster. As she slapped Giorno's cheeks trying to wake him up, she asked herself, was it really necessary to go that far?

- What the hell is going on, Miss Yumiko! The mayor almost barked

Yumiko, she had no idea either, in fact, she was the most confused of all. Giorno was a murderer, a thief who dreamed of being a vigilante in the style of some comic superhero.

Turns out this cocky, pedantic and manipulative guy actually does have super powers, she kept thinking to herself. While she vaguely listened to the "barks" of the furious and confused mayor.

She filled with courage and looked the mayor to the eyes, it didn't really matter who Giorno was or was, his abilities could be very useful for the Hasakura family, it was her duty to protect someone so valuable. So she, feigning tranquility, and without lowering her gaze for a second, she replied to the mayor:

- Giorno is very reckless, I have told him many times that he keep his secret weapons for moments of life and death.

- Secret weapons? Asked the mayor

Yumiko remembered the stories her grandfather told her about a fantasy world, where humans used magic, and there were unfathomable treasures that could make humans look like gods, so she invented, on the go; as the things take place in her mind.

-Giorno is what we call, in my family, a spiritual cultivator, he has approached the realm of the gods and what they have seen is only part of his abilities. He can really change this city. No, she corrected herself, he can change the world. The decision is yours Mr. Mayor, will he join our group or will he be like everyone else who simply prefers to ignore the rottenness of the city?

She looked at him with challenge and passion, while inside she could only think about what could be the worst that can happen now?

As she asked herself that question, hundreds of possibilities crossed her mind. Each one worse than the last. Meanwhile the loud knocking on her door, managed to break her little by little.

She would have preferred a thousand times to be the one to faint and let Giorno take care of this problem. She still continued to speak confidently and fiercely.

- Decide now, Mr. Mayor!, is he with us?

- Just tell me something: do you have a plan?

Yumiko lifted Giorno, who remained unconscious, and moving him like a doll said:

- He has a plan!

Inside of her she hoped he had it

The door finally opened, and several men who could tell they were freezing to death entered the office.

- Mr. Mayor, Mrs. Eliza are you okay?

-Yes, answered Eliza, who, without losing her elegance despite the cold, walked towards the men and pointed at Giorno.

- Why are you just standing there? You do not see to that idiot fainted from the fright by what just happened, help him and get us out of here, right now.

- Yes madam!

The lookout had not left Aron. The one they called Giorno was certainly good, he had exterminated a couple of rats without training without even trying, but Aron was extraordinary, he had defeated 7 men trained by Danddy; without help.

There was no doubt that he was the better of the two prey. In addition, Giorno was accompanied by policemen. Trying to get close to him like this would be very careless and would upset the boss if he found out.

So the best decision had been to follow Aron, ignoring Giorno for a while.

His desire to face Aron grew second by second as he watched him, he was pleased, he did not lower his guard, indeed, he was sure that he had already felt his presence and could not attack by surprise.

He couldn't wait any longer to face someone legitimately strong. He prepared to finally put his fingers on top of him, when his phone rang, if it had been any other call sound he would have ignored it, but it was the boss, he felt a chill run down his back and it came to him a bad feeling. Finally, he picked up the phone and replied:

- At your command My Lord.

- I imagine you saw what happened at the mayor's office.

- At the mayor's office?

He was supposed to have seen whatever happened in that place, after all it was his job as a lookout.

- Oh yeah of course it's amazing.

A drop of sweat fell from his forehead, as he let go of his prey, and he searched for a tall building.

-I need a detailed report at this precise moment, who the hell caused that disaster?

Disaster? What could have happened so that the chief was so upset, had the mayor's office been burned? He could not be exposed, he really had no idea what was happening, so he only managed to answer:

- Yes sir!

- Stop talking and come inform me right now!

He was in serious trouble, his only job was to keep the mayor's fiancee under surveillance. This woman represented a significant danger which they could not neglect. However, nothing interesting ever happened, but just as he ventured out of his job, something happens that he had no idea and that even managed to upset the boss.

While he was thinking, he ran up the wall. And in just a few seconds he reached the tallest building he found nearby. And, thanks to his incredible eyes, he could see from there what had happened. In amazement, he could only say one thing: why the hell is the mayor's office frozen?
