Chapter 6 - New life

Mia

I had to stay low for a while. Maybe a few months.

It took me 1 week to find a place and rent it. It was a very small apartment. But it was all I could afford. This town was very small. Nothing extraordinary happened here. It was quiet here. Just what I needed for staying hidden.

The first few days here were hell.

I slept in the car for 4 nights because I was living in fear that someone might be following me. My hand was still throbbing in pain. But I got used to it.

When I was sure no one followed me I started looking for a job. I had a major in literature. There was a small library here. I could try a hand there.

They gave me the job. Before asking a load of questions because no one had seen me here before. A small town had its own benefits and downsides.

Everyone knows everyone here.

I made a story.

"My long time boyfriend started to become abusive. First I didn't see the signs. But later I saw the red flags, they were very much visible. Hence the scar. I couldn't stay with him anymore. I need to stay hidden for a while. I need to set my life again. I need peace. I hope that I can find peace here. You all seem so friendly. He might come after me. I don't have the strength to face him again. You'll help me right?"

I made a puppy dog face and batted my lashes. Before crying hysterically.

I know this will definitely melt her.

"Oh dear, I'm so sorry. He's not fit for you. You are a strong woman. We'll definitely help you. I'll arrange a place for you to stay. My friend Mary needs a good tenant. She'll definitely help you. As for the job it's yours. You can join us tomorrow at 9 in the morning. Here's the address."

She scribbled an address and a phone number. She called her friend and told me I was coming there.

"Thank you, Mrs. Hunter."

"I'm happy to help dear."

She smiled. A woman in her late fifties, she seemed so angelic. I felt bad that I was lying to her and later the whole town. Talks spread like wildfire here.

"But what about your parents? You didn't go to their place?"

"I can't go there. How can I when they are already dead?"

They are dead to me now.

It took me 5 months to save enough money to buy a handgun and extra bullets.

I had to pay my rent, my expenditure plus save money to buy more legal weapons. My salary was too low for this. I would have to wait for some more time.

I started to train myself from the 3rd month. I had my weekends off. Those days I would overexert myself. My trainer Rick had to kick me out of the gym.

"Mia, you train like you wanna kill someone!"

"Believe me I want to."

"Nice one, now go home."

"Oh please let me be here for one more hour. I promise I'll go then. I have nothing else to do at home."

"Well, you could watch a movie or something."

"I want to train."

"There's no use. You are stubborn. Will you close the gym when you go home? I have a date with Jenny."

"I will. Enjoy."

That night I stayed at the gym.

Rick never questioned me why I wanted to train so hard. Maybe he thought I wanted to be strong enough to fight my 'abusive boyfriend'. At least it was profitable for me.

Rick was a professional and he had two other people working under him. Actually, they were all friends. Jenny and Albert also trained me. I had become very good friends with them. They taught me self-defense, boxing, kickboxing, and karate. Jenny was herself trying to learn sword fighting so I joined her. The more I know about weapons the better.

I was a quick learner so my training was complete within 14 months. I was now starting to use a gun. I could now afford gun training. Within a year and a half here I all my training was done.

Now was the time to head back home.

Back in the city, where everyone had moved on with their lives, nothing new happened except the crime rates touching the sky.

The captain himself was killed in an encounter. Way to go criminals!

The commissioner herself decided to appoint her best men in the line. Too bad they were going to die anyway.

Captain Ryan Wilson and Sargeant James Miller were appointed by the commissioner.

They were the golden boys of the police academy. Perfect records, no mistakes, it was a rumor that no perp could escape their claws.

Department favored them over the law. It was really unnecessary they always respected the law. They had high morals.

In the past few months, they had really brought the crime rate down. They wanted to catch Brian William, they were breaking his gang. His ruin was near.

He can't just go to jail. He didn't deserve such mercy. He deserved to die. I'll make sure of that. He killed Melissa and I'll avenge her.

Later I came to know the Captain and the Sargeant were best friends from childhood. They were like brothers. Captain was married to Lieutenant Naomi Carter for over a year now. They were all appointed to the same precinct. They were given permission to form their own team. I didn't know much about that.

The department was supposed to be free from those sitting ducks.

Who knows they are just pretending? They might've been working for Brian William who knows? Money and power could buy anything right?

These sitting ducks were in a way responsible for Melissa's death. So why not use one of them against Brian William himself?

I've gotta go home now. It's been a while, isn't it?
