Chapter 1 - Grave mistake

Mia

I made a grave mistake that day. One which would haunt me for the rest of my life.

I handed her pepper spray which she shoved inside her clutch. Melissa worn a maroon knee-length dress along with kitten black heels, she held her hair down partially braiding one strand. She paired it with black studs and a pendant necklace which had a picture of us when we were kids. I hugged her close, I didn't want to let her go. I don't know but I was having a very bad hunch but I chose to ignore it thinking it was just me overthinking.

"Mia, let me go now Jane's here."

"Call me if anything happens, don't hesitate. I'll be awake waiting for you. Take care baby."

"I will and please go to sleep I'll be fine. Bye."

Melissa gave me one last smile and sat in the car with her friends Jane and Christina.

She didn't return.

At least not in the way I wanted.

It was the last time I saw my Melissa, the real one who grew up with me. The one who came back was completely different, I couldn't in my wildest dreams imagine her to be my Melissa.

That night she didn't come back and neither her friends did. I called her number she didn't pick up. Then I tried her friend's number the same thing happened. I concluded for the sake of my sanity that they crashed at either Jane's or Christina's house so I called their parents. They said they weren't home and they thought that the girls crashed at my place. We rushed to the police station and filed the complaint.

I didn't know that it was useless at that time. I didn't know that all of those cops knew exactly what happened to the girls when they heard the name of the club they went to. They knew about Brian William the local mob boss and the owner of the club. He owned the city. No one could say a word against him so arresting him was totally out of question. I didn't know we had such creatures still surviving. What is this? The 80s?

Whatever it was it caused a tornado in my life and I was not liking that.

The next day these so-called cops found the dead bodies of Jane and Christina but still no trace of my Melissa.

Both were stabbed in the chest, no other proof found at the crime scene, no shreds of evidence, no murder weapon, no witnesses, zero zip nada.

The cops searched for my sister but they found nothing or they were hell-bent on proving that the case was at its end. So they closed it. They didn't even search properly and I who was a civilian who knew so little about crime except for the shows that I binge watch could tell that. I could tell that they weren't even putting in minimum effort.

What happened that night would be a mystery to me and Jane's and Christina's parents?
