Chapter 2 - Sitting Ducks

Mia

I had never just accepted anything because someone said so. It didn't matter I had to first do some research on it, find proofs and if it fitted my logical criteria of would accept it. I had always been like this so how could I just accept Melissa's case being closed???

"WHAT THE BLOODY HELL HAPPENED TO MY SISTER????"

I said to the detective assigned to her case.

"Ma'am, we tried our best to find her but there's nothing to prove, no evidence that we can work on so by protocol we had to close the case. I'm sorry but we can't help you." He said in a professional tone.

"You have got to be kidding me. You are the police it's your work to help me. I can't just sit here and accept everything. You didn't do shit." I accused him. I saw anger written all over his face. Why the hell was he angry?

"Ma'am, control your words this is a professional environment and I'm a reputed detective you can't talk to me like that."

"But I just did, didn't I?" I replied to that stupid bastard.

"I understand what you are going through but there's nothing we can get about this and you need to move on. Please leave."

"You don't understand what I'm going through because if you did you won't be a sitting duck here. I need to see your head. Where's your captain?"

"He has got no time for such small problems. He's a busy man, he's got a city to protect."

I scoffed, "Well he's not doing his job properly what is he and all of you cops getting paid for?"

By now the entire precinct was standing around us enjoying the free show and I was red with anger.

"Why aren't any of you working? What is this?" A booming voice came from a man who was in his fifties. Ah, the captain who is going to get his ass whooped today. I rushed to stand face to face with him and showed all my anger boiling within me.

"I suppose you are the captain?"

"Yes, that would be me. What is your problem young lady?" He asked smiling.

That man had the audacity to smile?

"With all due respect sir, you all are just a bunch of sitting ducks."

I said smiling the same smile he gave me just a second earlier. Mia doesn't spare.

"That's not how you talk with our captain!!!" I heard a group of officers shouting and the rest of them humming and agreeing with their friends.

"That's enough. Ma'am, please step inside my office I need a word with you." He gestured towards his office.

"If you want to talk, talk here. Are you hiding something that you are scared of talking about in front of your sitting ducks?"

"I think I can help you ma'am please just come in here."

I don't know why I agreed with him. Guess you do anything for your loved ones. If I had just walked away it would be fine. Because what he said in his defense was outrageous.

I stepped inside and he closed the door. He gestured me to take a seat but I chose to keep standing. I should have taken the seat.

"Explain."

"I don't know what happened to your sister or how the girls got murdered. But we know the name of the club and its owner. It is better for us not to step in his matters. I hope you know what I mean. So we can't help you. The sooner you get this the better. Don't do anything rash it might cost you your life."

My legs felt weak.

Is this for real? He's playing a prank on me right? Melissa is just behind the door I know. He's just playing a prank. Funny captain thinks he has a sense of humor.

"You are joking right?"

"No."

"What... "

My words died in my throat. I couldn't think. I should have taken the seat. I never listen.

"If you won't help me I'll help myself. " I murmured.

"I know you are not in the right state of mind. You should rest. Go home. I'll call you a cab."

"You said that you would help me."

"I did that you make you come inside the office."

"Your job is to protect the city. "

"I also have a job to protect my family."

"I can't believe this. I'm gonna expose all of you."

"You can't do that. Media's under Brian's control too. The whole city is. If you are able to do something there's a story ready in the backup. Melissa was an 18-year-old girl. She was a legal adult she has her own free will to go wherever she wants to go. She ran away and this is the statement we are going to release. Kids these days run away all the time. People will believe us not you."

"You didn't know Melissa I did. She won't run away she's isn't like that."

"Lady, all I say is what's done is done. You have a long life ahead. Be grateful that he spared you. Don't waste this chance."

Spared me? Who is he, God?

"Oh believe me when I say I won't waste even a second."
