Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Crash

Hi! I'm Tov. You probably already know how this goes. I was normal, until I wasn't, so I wrote a book about it! The gist of about every fantasy story to ever be written.

So, a quick recap of my life thus far. My biological parents abandoned me at an adoption agency. Ms. Smith, the kind woman who runs it, tried to help me find adoption parents for about twelve years with no luck. Until a few months ago a couple arrived, decided they liked me, and adopted me. So for like two months I was living with Sarah and John Miller.

Sarah had very dark hair and green eyes. She wore glasses and a silver and black metal necklace that she would never take off. She said John gave it to her before they started dating, so it was very special to her. She didn't know how to cook all that well so John would make most of the food. John had brown hair and amber eyes. He really liked swimming and talked about wanting to try out for the Olympics, but he didn't think he was fast enough.

I really liked staying with Sarah and John. They would often tell me stories of their urban adventures. Like how they would climb up escape ladders to the roofs of buildings to watch the sunrise. They were really nice parents, until the accident happened.

Four days ago, the hospital where my mother worked as a surgeon was bombed at the base. It collapsed with my mother inside.

As soon as he found out, John grabbed me and rushed us out to the car. He didn't tell me what was happening, but I noticed he was driving unusually fast and a bit recklessly. He would usually be so cautious to stop at yellow lights and wait at intersections for cars about halfway down the road.

So, when I noticed he was driving a little over the speed limit and running a few red lights I asked him what was going on. He never said anything and kept mumbling "please be alive" over and over under his breath. At that moment, I failed to see the frightened look on his face. So, completely oblivious to the cause of John's strange actions, I popped in my headphones and dozed off.

When I woke up, we were on the highway. I recognized the route we were taking as the one to the hospital.

"Oh, so we're going to see Mom." I thought.

We switched lanes to be closer to the exit, but a fourteen-wheeler also switched lanes and ended up in front of us. Then, two figures came into view.

The first looked like a boy cosplaying a phoenix. He was wearing red feathers on his arms and a bird mask strapped to his head. He was wearing a golden chestplate. He had red wings coming from his back. His eyes were dark gray and he had a brown hoodie.

The second was a white tiger with blue stripes and eyes. The tiger was carrying the cosplayer on their back.

The cosplayer stood from on top of the tiger and jumped off its back and onto the roof of the truck. As soon as the cosplayer was off its back, the tiger transformed into a girl wearing a white hoodie with blue triangular stripes. She also had a white striped tail coming from underneath her hoodie. She had short raven-colored hair that could barely be seen because of her hoodie.

Phoenix-cosplayer looked over the side of the truck to the tiger girl. She jumped onto the side of the truck and dug her claws into it. Cosplayer knelt down and reached a hand down to the tiger girl. The tiger girl took his hand and pulled herself up. She said something to him that I couldn't hear because they were outside. They both walked to the front of the truck so they were out of my view.

I turned to dad to see if he saw what I saw, but he was still focused on driving. I debated between disturbing him or not. Eventually I decided I should let him focus on driving so he didn't crash.

Suddenly, the truck swerved to the right and we crashed into the side of the cargo bed. My body jerked forward and my head hit the dashboard. I lent back on my chair with half-lidded eyes. Spots clouded my vision. The last thing I saw before I blacked out were the two figures jumping off the hood of the truck.
