If I hadn't been so captivated by (y/n), my attention solely on her, maybe I would have noticed. "He's dead!" She shouts. In these last few moments it's as if all this emotion had returned to her features. A girl who's suffering, but the one I've always loved.
The Magi looks nervous and confused. I was expecting him to be devastated. Maybe he just didn't believe us? If only I looked up or turned my nose towards his scent. "Didn't you hear? Your friend is dead," I repeat to him, not wanting her to force those ugly words out once more.
He scratches his neck, avoiding my eyes, "Huh? Oh.. uh.. he is?" The boy gives me a questioning look. Did I have to recall the vision of yet another death? I didn't want to describe the details or remember the loss of yet another useless human being.
"He got above himself and offended Lord Jamil," she mutters quietly. No more words would pass her lips. How could I let her remember? If only I could cup her ears and allow her to forget. To lose herself in my embrace and the darkness of her shut eyes.
"Be careful or the same will happen to you!" I snap at him. The lantern rolls across the floor. I turn to grab it, almost out of instinct, but am drawn back when (y/n) lets out a muffled cry. Seems the carpet that the boy had laid on was flung over her head. I yank it off of her, and we turn to find the Magi has disappeared. As well as the same carpet, whose soft fabric had been between my fingers just moments before. We both look around desperately.
"I'm still here, Miss!" A voice calls out from above.
"What?!" I glare at the boy as him and his friend fly on the carpet above us. How had I missed him?
"Sorry! We have to go! See you two later!" I start running towards the wall, ready to chase after them. They can't escape from me, not like this. (y/n) looks panicked, I can't let our Master hurt her for this, only me. "When your invisible chains break, let's go see that sun together!" The boy calls down to us. I've had enough. I won't stand this child taunting this life we're forced to live, completely unaware of its seriousness.
"Don't act like you understand!" I scream, my red eyes boiling with rage. "You don't know a single thing about life as a slave!" Not the numbness and lack of human identity. Not the cries our minds are constantly reliving. Not the deep physical and psychological scars of his torment, or the way he controls your entire being. Not how you work your *ss off and do other people's dirty work just to be treated like less that sh*t!
I dig my feet into the ground as it breaks beneath my soles. I watch the way their eyes widen as my feet climb up the wall and quickly at that. I'm almost there.
The carpet swings up as I jump. I have to make this, but my fingers just barely slip from the fabric. Tumbling towards the ground as I watched them escape. "Wait!" (y/n) calls out to them. I clench my fist, descending to the floor as I land heavily on my feet. The ground beneath my soles crumbles. I slide back before regaining my balance. I must appear terrifying, but I feel panic wash over me. Glancing up into the sky then back to the passage entrance I knew we needed to tell him. Immediately though I was dreading it. The words 'It's my fault.' were playing in my head over and over again. The psychological punishment of slavery with this man. I couldn't even imagine what punishment awaited me and her. Our Lord will not be happy.
Motioning to (y/n), she hops on my back as we leave, running down the hall. It isn't long for me to pick up our master's scent, but with it follows a horrendous stench. Unrealistically sweet that you knew something was wrong with the picture. I cling tightly onto her legs as we speed up. She lets out a yelp, clinging her arms around my neck. Her fragile figure holding on in a way that told me she was worried I might drop her.
My eyes widen in shock as huge, bug-like monsters hover over Jamil and Goltas. Both males lash their swords around in desperation.
Letting (y/n) down, I quickly rush up to him as he turns his head to see me coming. His dark hair is drenched in sweat, his normally cold eyes filled with worry as he sees me. "What happened, Morgin?" He calls out to me. He lets out a 'tch' turning to slice through another one of those things as he clenches his teeth.
I rush to his side. As soon as his eyes meet mine he knows what has happened. "What?" He yells out as he hits (y/n). "That brat got away? How could this happen?" I get on my knees as he digs his foot into the back of my head, rubbing my face into the rubble. 'That's right.. focus on me, this was my doing.'
