Chapter 10 - What could have been

-Are you alright?

Michael's voice sounded a bit deeper. Soraya looked up at him. His blue eyes were a bit darker. She felt like she just met a predator and she was his prey. At that moment, there was an almost palpable sexual tension in the air around them.

Michael lowered his head slowly.

'He is going to kiss me. Do I want to? Yes, I want. But this...isn't this too quick?'

He was silently asking for her consent, and she stood there, without moving back. Then, she closed her eyes, waiting for his lips. But instead, he broke the embrace and the kiss didn't happen.

-Shall I take you home now?

Soraya opened her eyes. There was surprise, followed by embarrassment.

-O...okay.

Michael suddenly felt to be very far away.

-Let's go.

The electricity, the tension, the passion which was there between them merely a few seconds ago, suddenly disappeared.

They made the way to the car in silence. It was a electric blue Bentley. She was a little surprised. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-What model is it?- Soraya tried to end the silence between them on her way home.

-A Continental GT of 2005. The car goes perfect, but I found it for less than a fifth of the price of a new one. And as I told you, I kinda prefer the classics. A friend of mine helped...

Afer a while of light topics, they finally arrived to Soraya's home.

-It's been nice to meet you, Soraya.

-I agree.

-Then, I'll wait until you enter.

'Don't you want my number? Is this going to end like this?'

-Thanks...goodnight.

-Goodnight.

Thud.

The sound of the closed door divided their world again. Soraya didn't look back. Michael didn't call her either. She crossed the door. A few seconds later, he left.

That was the end of the meeting.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Soraya closed the door of her bedroom. She threw herself on her ber, and her mind was empty while she looked st the ceiling. She was stunned.

'What the hell happened tonight?'

From awkwarness, to comfort, to sexual tension in the air, to indifference, coldness...

'And that...he was clearly going to kiss me. And his warm embrace...'

'Arg...whatever...I don't know! I don't care!'

A music box is playing in a dark mansion. The interior uses dark oak wood and black furniture. The only light inside comes from the moonlight which goes across the large windows. Someone is walking on the broad carpet. That person opens the door to the basement and comes inside.

A candle is lighted and in the basement there is a prison cell. A shape moves slightly inside the cell. It's a man, with long uncut dirty hair, with clothes much more dirty.

-To what do I owe the honor of your visit, 'Mayhem'?

-So that's how you named me? I'm honored. -The voice of a boy, probably a teen came from that person outside the cell.

-Cut the chat short. What do you want now?

-I just thought that it's time to end our little game of cat and mice. I trapped you, so I won.

-You're just a monster under an angel appearance.

-And you were just a beast under a human appearance. All which you touched crumbled under your whimps.

The boy called 'Mayhem' by the prisoner took out a pistol and pointed it towards the cell.

-Ha, so this is my end. I must say you're not very creative.

-Arthur, say your last words.

-Um, well I can't say any big words 'cause I'm not a saint but...I'll tell you something. Someday, you're going to suffer much more than me 'cause I heard somewhere that karma is a b#tch.

A little smile appeared in 'Mayhem's' face and a shot could be heard.

Arthur didn't make any noise again.

-You're right. I'm starting to feel that pain right now. Ha, ha, truly, karma is a b#tch.

The boy called 'Mayhem' look at the now dead Arthur, let the pistol fall and went back without a second glance. He seemed fine but, the truth could only be felt by him. A truth nobody could ever know or he would be in danger too.

A pity that lovers could not be together and were even enemies so that at least one could survive. Humans believed they were advancing technologically but, the truth was, they were just like children being manipulated to destroy all which made them powerful, no matter the gender, the color of their skin, their culture...They were all the same. But even so, love could only exist if it was inside the society's standars.
