Minutes turn into hours, days turn into months. Elijah could neither turn back time nor stop it. Finally, one day the phone rings.
"Hi Mr. Elijah, we got the autopsy results and there were no other injuries on her body, except for the bullet wounds. So we have closed the case, we decided that it was suicide. I'm so sorry" says Alex.
Elijah sighs, "It's okay Alex, I appreciate what you have done for me. You are a good man, take care".
Elijah kept the phone and gave a moment of silence for his dead wife. Then Elijah moved on with his life, what more could he do? Every day, he got up, went to work, came home, and did it all over again the next day. He kept a picture of Kira by his nightstand, he would always talk to it the moment he woke up. Elijah's life started getting boring, there was no thrill at all. Or so he thought.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Elijah stares at the elevator furiously. It seems to go especially slow today. He presses the button rapidly like he was playing whack-a-mole.
PING! The doors open, he steps inside and presses button 3. The elevator reaches the third floor and opens the doors; he steps out in a hurry. He loosens his tie as he sighs. He was really exhausted; it was a long day at work. He took his key out and opens the door. Suddenly his eyes fix on something on the bottom of the doormat.
It was hanging out, just enough to be visible. He reaches and pulls it out. It was a white envelope. It was addressed to Elijah Bennett. He looks around, from side to side. He grew suspicious. If this was sent by post, it would have been in his post box. He examines the letter carefully, there was nothing written on it, except for his name. Then he realizes that someone came and left this letter in front of his house. A chill runs down his spine. He shrugs it off and goes inside.
Elijah takes a knife and slowly slices the envelope open. He had learned that technique from his father. Suddenly, his childhood memories flash in front of his eyes. He remembers how it had felt to be loved by his father, something he can never feel anymore. How he desperately wanted to pick up the phone and dial him. But he ignores that feeling, knowing that his father will never respond to him, after all, he did break his trust.
He pulls out a piece of paper from the envelope; he stares at it in shock. It was the divorce papers, the ones that Kira had begged him to sign. It even had her signature on it. He looks inside the envelope and finds another piece of paper. He pulls that out and looked inside.
"I know what you did, you can't escape this time," it said, in big black letters.
Elijah drops the paper and falls to his knees. Who is this? What do they know? he thought. He didn't understand who this could be. He didn't understand what they were talking about. But he understands one thing. Someone was watching him. Who could be this interested in my life? he thought.
He suddenly gets an idea and grabs his phone. Elijah dials the number for his landlord.
"Hello? Yes, this is Elijah Bennett, tenant in 313. WhenI got home today, I found a letter tucked in at the bottom of the doormat. I was wondering if I could take a look at the security cameras to see who it was. Yes, I can come there in about 10 minutes. Thank you!"
Elijah cuts the call and puts his phone in his back pocket. He picks up the papers and put them carefully back in the envelope. He leaves it on the nightstand, beside Kira's picture. He takes his keys and races out the door.
CCTV OPERATING ROOM it read, Elijah, knocks on the door. A guy opens the door and welcomes him in.
"Hi Mr. Elijah, first, I just wanted to convey my condolences to you. Ms. Kira was so kind to me, she always used to greet me whenever she saw me. She was truly an amazing soul" he says while wiping a few tears from his eyes.
"So we started looking at the CCTV footage with the time slots you told us and we found something rather interesting, come look at this" Elijahfollows the guy.
He takes him into another room, filled with monitors, displaying all the CCTV camera footage. The guy points towards a monitor that shows the footage of the camera outside of Elijah's house. It was a person wearing a black hoodie, it covered their head and the entire body. He sees that person walk up to his door and put the letter below the doormat. The person then looks around to make sure no one is there and leaves immediately.
"Mr. Elijah, the crazy thing is that the person knows all the CCTV cameras in the building because when they passed them, they covered their face. I'm sorry to say this, but it looks like this person either lives in this building or is a person you know, who has come often to your house"
Elijah thanks the guy for his help and walks out. He feels like he knows that person. Something about that person just made Elijah connected with them. He feels like he is lost in an ocean, with nowhere or no one to turn to. Kira was the only one who was there for him since his family didn't speak to him. Now that she is gone, he is all alone.
As Elijah walks to his apartment, he takes slow steps, with each step he deepens his thinking.
" This person likes to play games, huh? I can play games as well. Bring it on, I am not going without a fight" Elijah thinks to himself.
It's now time for Elijah to show his other side. The side he used in the cabin. The side no one had seen....except for Kira.
