Like everything good in life, it doesn't last. My roommates (both witches) showed up four days later and I almost had a heart attack, expecting them to lash out at me or something similar; but they just looked surprised at seeing me, and then proceeded to ignore me.
"Hey, hybrid, I'll move some of your clothes to the side. I need more space" Said the black-haired one while looking at my clothes as if they were rags.
I replied "Okay" timidly and stayed hidden on my bed, away from their direct sight. I heard a knock on the door, and I saw as the black-haired girl went to open it. The representative that brought me here asked for me, 'Bianca Hersey', and the confused girl replied 'Who?'.
"Your new roommate" He clarified.
"Oh! The hybrid".
I didn't blame her; I also didn't know her name. I went with him, wherever he wanted to take me, and he said a friend of mine just came and asked to meet me. I was confused, because I didn't have any friends.
"He offered to give you orientation and to be your guide" He said.
Okay, I felt a little honored. Nobody has wanted to help me voluntarily, ever. The nervousness increased as we walked through the hallways, crossing many witches and warlock students and some of them looked at me surprised, others irritated, and others surprised then irritated. Looks like I'm making a ton of new friends, ha ha (note the sarcasm).
We ended up on a little meeting room, where I found a very familiar face. He was looking into space, probably thinking of nothing, as his mouth was also half-opened and a bit of drool fell out. The medium-sized table difficultly supported his gigantic form and he was standing with his legs crossed.
"Alexander?" Representative called for him.
Nothing.
"Alexander? Your friend is here".
Still nothing. He was so excited to see me.
"Mr. Hamington..." Representative tried again, reaching for his arm.
As his brain restarted, he panicked and talked nonsense while unconsciously agitating and moving the table a bit away from its original spot.
"Wha!? Wha!?"
"Mr. Hamington, your friend!"
He finally looked at me, and after a moment of clarity, he smiled at me and said "Bianca, wow, you look so small!" Thank you?
I could see the representative's urge to roll his eyes, but he still forced a smile and came between us.
"As I said, Mr. Alexander Hamington offered to be your guide while you adapt so, if you have any doubt, you can go to him".
"Thank you" I replied.
"I hope you can get along very well".
"We will" Alexander said while patting my head. I'm not really violent, but I wanted to cut his hand off.
We were left alone not long after, and Alexander stood pensive like a statue. Again. This has to be a joke.
"What the heck am I supposed to show you? This place is a f*cking bore!" He said out of nowhere.
"Then why did you offer to be my guide?"
"My dad asked me to! And why are you here, are you crazy? We're in the middle of f*cking nowhere with no phones, no T.V, nothing".
What a gentleman my childhood friend has become!
"I'll just go to the entertainment room, wanna come with me?"
"Yeah?"
And I followed him to that room. It was crowded but fortunately, no witches or warlocks were on my sight; just a bunch of humans resting on the couches or playing board games. At the background there were some kind of small booths where you could play videogames, and we went straight to one already occupied by two human boys.
"Die, you virgin wh*re!"
"Hey, that's cheating!"
Alexander pushed the head of the 'cheater', making him lose his advantage on the game apparently, because he cursed while the other boy laughed.
"What's wrong with you, dumb*ss!?"
"You always lose anyway, get over it".
Both guys let go of their controllers, showing on the TV screen 'virgin wh*re' has won.
"She's Bianca Hersey, an old neighbor of mine and new student here" Alexander introduced me.
"Is she nuts? Why coming to this hell-hole?" Said the cheater.
"Of course she was forced to come: no human comes willingly" Replied the virgin wh*re.
I was going to keep quiet and let them think I was human, until Alexander corrected them and said I was an hybrid.
"A what!?"
"What's that?"
"Half human, half witch" Alexander explained.
"Is that possible?"
They looked at me amazed, but I kept my face emotionless.
"And why does she have a 'kill-me-now' face?"
"Coming here is enough tragedy".
The three of them laughed and talked like I wasn't even there. I almost wanted to go, but that would mean I'd be potentially alone at the mercy of other magic users.
"You don't look like a witch, to be honest" The virgin wh*re told me.
"And how do witches look?" I asked, very interested.
"Like stuck-up brats with delusions of royalty" Said the cheater.
"Don't say that out loud!" The other guy scolded, smacking his head.
"Why not?"
"Some witch-lover may hear you".
Alexander and 'cheater' trembled in horror. And I almost did the same.
Soon, we sat together on the small booth and I watched as the three guys took turns playing their videogames. At the beginning it was fine, but more than two hours later I was extremely bored and tired of being on the same position.
"Don't you ever get tired?" I asked them.
"No" They mind-absently answered.
"I'll go eat something".
The guys didn't reply and kept playing, while I stood up and went out of the room. On my way I found a cafeteria; I didn't know if I could just go there and ask for free food or if I had to pay (what an amazing 'guide' I had), but I walked up to the lady on the cash register anyway.
She clarified most of the stuff were 'free' (included on tuition payments), but other deluxe items costed some extra euros. I asked for some kind of pasta and juice (which were free) and sat at one of the empty tables to eat, peacefully, until a witch came near me.
She had the face of a condescending adult about to scold an unruly child, and I didn't like it.
"Hello, are you new?" She asked the obvious.
"Y...yeah"
"Well, as a fellow student, I'd like to give you some advice"
Her fake sweet-honeyed words almost gave me some goosebumps.
"Sure"
"You can't sit in here".
What?
"The right tables are reserved solely for us, witches and warlocks. You have to sit elsewhere, maybe with the humans. It's always been like that, so I hope you understand".
I didn't know how to react. I almost stared incredulously at her, who does she (and every witch/warlock) think she is? Also, I was mad at Alexander for not warning me about this. But I was a coward, so I just mumbled a "thank you" and left the table with my tray of food. And to make it worse, some other students looked at her proudly, like she was a freaking hero putting me in my place.
What's even worse is that I saw a warlock talking lively with another one in one of the left tables, so that stupid rule of where to sit didn't apply to them.
Probably there were other social rules that Alexander failed to tell me.
