Chapter 2 - The Change

The time was I don't even care.....Past mid-night is all I know. The soft sound of the normal honking of cars filled the air. The room is dark and the bed is warm. I still couldn't believe I'm going to Kristina's party. That's all I thought about in my sleep. I up and walked over to my desk. I kept the lights off to keep a soft tune. The dark is always softer than the light because it gives the brain the illusion that it was time to rest. I turned on my computer and put the lighting as low as possible. I checked my email to see several messages asking for me to start looking for colleges. It was only Sophomore year, but finding the right college takes time. I've impressed my teachers with my work and have taken some courses for extra credit. I haven't really impressed myself though. Out of everything I have done, I haven't done something that makes me say "I'm proud of myself". There was no time in my life where I can truly say those words.

I spent a few minutes browsing the media to find something interesting to no avail. I then searched up some part time jobs. I have a lot of time on my hands so it would be good to put myself to more use. There were no openings for the most part so I gave up and closed out of the internet.

A message popped up from Vick. I clicked on it and it opened up a voice chat. "Can't sleep either huh?" He ask.

I nodded, "I'm here aren't I?"

Mike soon joined in, "Hey boys, Looks like we backfired on the whole sleeping in thing." We all laughed a little.

"I really don't have anything to do and my brain doesn't wanna sleep so I'm here." I answered.

Vick yawned a little and held up a controller, "Sooooo, Battlefront?"

I held up my controller as did Mike, "Sure thing man." We opened up the game and started playing a few rounds. Playing Battlefront is the perfect place to chill and have fun. When people get stressed or don't know what to do, they go do what makes them happy and relaxes them. For us, that's playing video games. Gaming isn't just a place to relax, but it also enhances your reflexes and helps make smart decisions like organizing and strategizing. It's even better when you play with friends so it increases communication.

We started what felt like our 6th round when something happened. I felt a huge rush of adrenaline. It wasn't just a power increase, but something in my mind just jump started. I saw blaster fire coming from all over, but none of them hit me. My hand-eye coordination was too fast. I didn't even notice what was going on until the round ended and I saw myself on the top of the leaderboard with a score of 3 times a much as the guy in second place.

"Dude, how...how did you do that?" Mike asked.

I shook my head and rubbed my eyes, "Did what?" Vick and Mike paused. They seemed speechless. I looked at my score again and was surprised as they were.

"You got over 300 kills." Vick finally said.

I shrugged my shoulders, "So, the round probably went for a long time."

Mike shook his head, "No dude, that round lasted 8 minutes. You didn't even die once." I continued to stare at my score. The closest I've ever gotten to this was 98 kills in about a half hour. over 300 kills in 8 minutes feels impossible.

"Well, that's interesting. I guess I've gotten better." I said brushing my hair.

Vick laughed, "Your mind teaching me some of those moves?"

I shrugged again, "I don't even know what I did."

"Well, I should probably get some sleep. I'm tired." Mike yawned.

I nodded, "Yea me too."

"By guys." Vick finished and we all logged off.

That was weird. Sure it's just a game, but stuff like that doesn't just happen. *BANG* *BANG* *BANG* I heard coming from outside. It was so loud it made me jump from my seat. I ran over to the window to see someone across the street banging on a door. Why was it so loud? I wouldn't be able to hear that from all the cars.

I looked toward the traffic and closed my eyes. The loud honking hit me hard and I fell over. Then I felt a rough rumbling. It was a subway, but how could I hear it from all the way under the surface and why could I feel the shaking of the tracks? A large shrieking ignited my body and I covered my ears again. It was the same sound as before. I slowly made my way back to the window to see a plane fly by and head towards the airport. So if that was a plane I heard earlier, then everybody else should have heard it.

I looked down to see people walking about their business. I wanted to test something. I focused on one man in a large coat on the phone with a brief case. I could hear his voice get louder, "Don't worry dear, I'm only a few blocks away. I'll be home soon." His voice was as clear as crystal. I could hear it above all the noise of the entire city. I could even tell what he had in his bag just by the sound of its sway. About 3.6 pounds inside including a laptop, a few pens and pencils, a notepad, and a few coin sense. My eyes did something unexpected and my whole vision turned blue. I jumped back from the sudden color change. I looked back down at the man and saw that he was the only one who stood out from the color. He appeared in a gold/red color. That must be because he was the subject I was focusing on.

I closed my eyes tightly and shut the window hard. I rubbed my eyes and forehead several times. My eyes snapped open and the blue color was flickering on and off like a lightbulb. My eyes finally stopped the blue color and everything went back to normal. The noises returned to their normal level of sound and the world became quiet again. I breathed hard in panic. What's happening to me? I felt the weight of the bed pull me down and I closed my eyes drifting off to sleep.
