Chapter 3 - Enhancement

I woke up to the bright sun glaring it's eyes on my face. I squinted at light light, until it happened again. My eyes turned blue and it blocked the sun's glare. Almost like sunglasses. I rubbed my eyes and looked away from the light. What's going on with me? I don't feel sick. If anything I feel more energized. The blue shade finally faded away again.

I got up from the bed and changed into some jeans and a T-shirt. My phone vibrated on the desk and I picked up to see a message from Mike. *Kristina and I are meeting with friends at the park. Wanna come?*

*Sure. On my way* I texted back. Ok, this is my chance. I just gotta be myself and have fun. Forget about what happened last night. That was just getting anxiety and paranoia. Everything is fine. There is nothing wrong with me. I just need some fresh air.

I pulled on my black leather jacket and walked out of my room.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I walked into Central Park trying to figure out what I'm gonna say. "Hey Kristina how's life? No no no that's stupid. Hi Kristina, how goes the day? What? That's even dumber. Kristina, how's it going? Better. Yes that's better."

"Yo Alex, over here." I heard to my left. I turned to see Vick waving at me. I waked over to them, "Hey guys, what's up?" Mike held up a football, "Well, the girls made us a bet."

I smirked, "Ok, so what's the bet?" Vick grinned, "Which one of us is the best thrower? All three of us throw as far as we can and see which one of us threw the furthest." I looked over to Kristina and her friends giggling and peaking at us. I nodded, "Alright, I'm in."

"Ok, first up is throwing. Vick, you go first." Mike explained. Vick nodded and stepped up to throw. He looked at his target, a tree in the distance. He circled his arm around and shot the ball out of his hand as hard as he could. The ball flew through the air and hit the tree trunk.

The sound of the ball hitting the wood echoed in my ears. I stumbled a little recovering from the suddenly loud smack. "Hey, you ok?" Mike asked, putting his hand on my shoulder. I rubbed my ears, "Yea. Yea, I'm fine." This isn't good. That thing is back. Ok ok ok, just stay calm. It'll go away.

Mike ran over to pick up the ball and ran back to where Vick stood, "Ok boys, get ready to give up." He wound up and fired the ball out of his hand. It soared like a plane and crashed into a bush several yards ahead of the tree. I heard the screeching of squirrels slammed against my eardrums He gave us a smirk, then ran to go retrieve it.

Mike pat me on the back, "Good luck topping that." I looked at Kristina. I focused on her words. "Do you think Alex will win?" One girl asked. Kristina shrugged, "I don't think so. Mike always wins. I've literally never saw him lose once."

I faced down field and closed my eyes. I kept my breath steady. In and out. I felt another jump start in my mind. It flood through my body. It felt good. No, it felt great. This rush of power and adrenaline no longer scared me or made me question it. This felt natural. I wound up and followed through as the ball exploded out of my hand like a rocket and screamed over the trees. It just kept going until it hit the ground halfway across the entire park. I could hear it hit the dirt like I could hear a fly whisper a few inches away from my ear.

"What the.....H...h...how?" Vick stuttered. I looked at both of them. Their jaws hit the ground. "I don't know." I answered, "I just....threw the ball." I looked back at Kristina. She too along with her friends were in shock. "I guess I've been working out a lot." I joked trying to find an excuse.

"You sure coach doesn't want you at Quarterback?" Mike answered. I looked all the way down at where the ball landed. Everything turned blue again. Everything, except the ball. A gold/red color illuminated the ball off in the distance. I couldn't see it with my normal sight. I threw it over a mile. Whatever is going on with me, I don't think it's a curse.

Kristina walked up to me, "Wow Alex, that was very impressive." I quickly relaxed my focus and everything went back to their normal color. "Haha, thanks. I don't really know how I did that." She smirked, "I doubt that. Mike, how come you never invited him to our house before? He might be able to give you some advise on your pathetic workout routine."

"I love you too sis." He responded as she walked off. He grinned at me, "Well, you got her attention." I rolled my eyes, "Yea, you could say that."

"Man, how the hell did you do that? That's not natural." Vick replied. "That's impossible." Mike added. I shrugged, "Dude, you can ask me as many times as you want, but I'm telling you I don't have an answer."

Vick sighed, "Well, since you threw the ball like a mile away, you're the one who's gonna go get it. We'll go and grab some burgers after. We'll meet at the exit." I nodded and they walked off with the girls. Kristina gave another glace in my direction before turning and joining the others.

I looked at the ball again halfway across the park. I started jogging towards it. But jogging didn't seem fast enough so I started running. But that still didn't seem fast enough so I started sprinting. That thing happened again. A strong feeling in my brain. An adrenaline rush exploded through my veins My legs felt stronger and my arms pumped faster. I sliced through the wind with explosive power. And in no time, I was standing right in front of the ball.

Did I just run an entire mile in 4 minutes? Wait, how do I know exactly how much time has passed? I wasn't counting. The closest I've gotten to this time was 7 minutes. I slowly picked up the ball and looked back to where I came from. I didn't even feel out of breath. Like my stamina was never drained. I could even tell how many objects I've passed. 48 people, 6 squirrels, 18 trees, I could go on. I'm not complaining about this weird sudden change, but it's kinda freaking me out.

I focused on the exit off in the distance where the others were waiting. Everything turned blue once again. The group flashed gold/red. They were about 1.2 miles away. I can get there in about 3 minutes considering the wind is blowing towards them. Without a second thought, I exploded into a hard sprint. My legs moved so fast I didn't even feel the ground beneath me. It felt like the entire world was moving slower than I am.

"WATCHOUT!!!" Mike yelled, snapping me back. I looked forward and the wall that surrounded the park came out of nowhere. I didn't even think. My body already knew what to do. I jumped up and kickflipped off the concrete barrier. The blue shade faded and everything returned to normal. I still had the football in my hand. I walked over to Mike and handed him the ball. He just stared at me as I smiled and pat him on the back. Kristina smiled with her jaw still wide open. I could hear her whispering to her brother.

"Is he showing off or is he doing this to impress?" She said. It was only a whisper, but it was as loud as a freight train. "Honestly, I think he's doing this because he wants to. He seems a lot more in sync with himself it looks like. A lot more focused." Mike answered.

He was right. I felt a lot more in tune with my senses and mind. I wanted to test something again. I looked up at the sun and squinted at it's light. I continued to focus until the shade of blue washed over everything. I no longer needed to squint. I just stared up at the giant light as it stared back.
