Chapter 4 - Chapter 3, Part 2: Mrs. Caulfield's Wake

Alissandra Cadence

I can't believe what Jason just did. Like, how am I gonna accept him on the day that we're actually attending a funeral? I may be acting weird, mean, stubborn, or whatever. It just doesn't feel right in any way.

I took a taxi to Jessica's house to attend the ceremony. I had to go there alone because I can't really stand Jason anymore.

"And where exactly are we going ma'am?" the taxi driver asked.

"Wilborne street, right across the village near the forest park."

And we arrived, I grabbed my phone and checked what time is it. And it is currently 12:54. I paid the taxi driver and went out already. From a distance, I could already see people outside.

I walked and went inside and there are also plenty of people, regardless of how big their house is. Even the backyard and front yard are full of people. As a matter of fact, almost everyone inside is crying and some are in front of Mrs. Caulfield's coffin.

"Alissa! You came!" Mr. Caulfield said as he saw me in their house.

"Yep, and I am really sorry for what happened. My mom also wants to send her condolences since she can't come today..." I replied in a polite way.

"It's okay, we're glad you're here. Go on sit, the ceremony will start in a bit," he said then went outside

"Okay, thanks," I said and then sat down on the chair. There are several rows of chairs inside, they even changed their house completely just to set things up. I don't know anyone from their guests so I just kept quiet while on my phone.

I looked around for a bit while sitting and saw Jessica at the table talking with someone, which is probably her classmate. And her boyfriend Steve just got inside walking towards Jessica holding funeral flowers. I saw him staring at me then quickly looked away at the very moment I noticed him.

And for a moment, Jessica just saw someone from the door and said "You came!" and approached whoever it was and they sat at the opposite row of where I'm sitting.

"You came here alone? Do you want something to eat? A juice?" she asked.

"No, I'm good," he said.

I don't even have to look because I already know who it is, obviously. Since Jessica's mood just lightened up all of a sudden when she saw him.

"Okay, well then..." she said then walked back to the table.

I just sat there quietly, pretending I have no idea about his presence.

Then I just saw Steve and Jessica talking then looking at me as if they were talking about me. Well, I just didn't mind them at all and continued checking my social media.

"Dad?" Jason said.

"What are you doing here dad?" he added.

"Oh, you're here. Yeah, I'm just visiting an old friend. But she's already at peace."

I just listened to their conversation without looking at them. I know it's not good to eavesdrop but how the hell could I ignore what they're talking about?

"Do you know Mrs. Caulfield?" Jason asked.

"Yes, a lot. She is also my best friend before..." his voice sounded like he frowned.

"And you didn't bother to tell me?"

"It's a long story, Jason. Those were good times, and we're so close before."

"Hello, everyone. From the very bottom of my heart, I appreciate all of you for coming today, here at my wife's funeral. I may not know some of you, but my wife would appreciate every effort that we do to honor her. She has been a very caring wife, a loving mother, and a great person," Mr. Caulfield said as an opening.

The ceremony began and was led by the pastor with a eulogy, and after that, they started to honor Mrs. Caulfield by giving her their vows and other eulogies from the guests. The ceremony ended, I was about to leave then-

"Well, well, well, look who's here. The soon to be Mrs. McKenley, huh?  And oh... sorry to brag but my boyfriend just told me that you rejected Jason? How nice of you, should I thank you?" she said sarcastically.

And seriously? Trynna act like she just saw me? Even though she looked at me several times earlier? And why is Steve acting like he's okay with this? It's clear that she hasn't moved on with Jason yet and she's clearly using Steve. Well, they're basically using each other.

"I have no time for this Jessica, and I'm sorry about your mom."

"Oh look, she's trying to be nice, Haha. Should I be worried?" she said then raised an eyebrow.

"Oh come on, Jessica. Just stop it," Steve said then trying to pull her away. "Sorry, I just had to tell her that I saw you and Jason at the mall when I was buying flowers."

I saw Mr. Caulfield approaching me and asked "What's happening here? Are you leaving now?"

"Yeah, I also have something to do for later though," I raised my eyebrows. "Some errands, you know. Life happens," I said.

Then Jessica suddenly crossed her arms and rolled her eyes.

"Okay then, the burial will happen on Thursday, I encourage you and your mom to come," he said.

"We'll try our best Mr. Caulfield, I'm gonna go ahead," I said as I walk to the door and waved.

"Take care, Alissa," he said.

I just smiled and went out already.

I have nothing else planned for later so I just decided to go shopping and spend time with me, myself, and Alissa. Also because I haven't gone shopping for a while and I'll go for a shopping spree today. I just took a taxi to the mall, I hope the people won't recognize me and what I've done earlier. I just got inside and walked while looking for something that I may like. I've been walking for a while and I still haven't found anything. I just kept looking and I found a mannequin that is wearing a black polka-dotted dress along with a black fedora that matches perfectly. I went inside and made a closer look and it seems really nice.

"That fits you perfectly, ma'am," the saleslady said as she approached me.

"Oh really? I love it though, how much is the whole outfit?" I asked.

"It is $4,240, ma'am. Are you having it, ma'am?"

I looked around for a sec in the shop and realized that I am in Oscar de la Renta.

"Oh, yeah I'm having it. Here's my card."

"Okay ma'am, one sec," she said and measured my size. "Okay ma'am, I'll be right back."

I just waited for my dress and looked around some more and found a small black shoulder bag. And the saleslady came back with my dress in a shopping bag.

"I'm having this one too, how much is it?" I asked and pointed to the shoulder bag.

"It is $1,490, ma'am."

"Okay, I'm buying it."

"Okay ma'am here's your outfit, I'll be right back," she said then left.

"Here ma'am, is there anything else you like?" she asked.

"I think that's all," I said as she gave it to me.

"Okay ma'am, here's your card. Have a great day!"

"You too," I said and went out of the shop.

I have something to wear at the burial now, and I don't think there's anything else that I need. I just went back home already and spent the rest of my day studying. I just remembered what happened earlier and I felt completely embarrassed about myself. I don't know how to talk to Jason anymore, I also don't wanna talk to him but it just bothers me and I don't know why. I'm such an idiot.
