Chereads / Renaissance Girl / Chapter 2 - Aftermath

Chapter 2 - Aftermath

Delfina finds herself feeling oddly numb. It wasn't that she couldn't feel anything, a dull ache proved that, but she felt not quite right and as though she should be in more discomfort than she was. She hears a gentle humming as she tries to move, but finds that rather difficult as well. She tries to open her eyes, but finds that to be a fight too. Finally, after what feels like an eternity, she's able to pry them open slightly. Instantly, they're closed again as her lids feel too heavy and the light is much too bright! She attempts again and is startled to find a man looking down at her with a slight frown in scrubs. His lips move as his concerned expression doesn't change, but she isn't able to discern what he's saying. He suddenly turns his head and seems to say something, then he glances at her again with a deepened frown before he walks away.

She wanted to pay more attention, look around, see what happens next… anything really! She truly did want and intend to do so, but that familiar all consuming darkness embraces her once again. Her strength has long since fled with her efforts of moving and she could do nothing but embrace it, hoping to learn what she didn't know upon awakening again.

Delfina stirs again, feeling that strange numbness once more as she does so. She is able to blink much more easily now, however her eyes don't enjoy the light anymore than before. She moves her lips, feeling severe cotton mouth as she recalls that she had what she assumes was a breathing tube in before. She looks around the room, feeling herself slightly startled to see the room wasn't as clinically white as previously. No, for reasons unknown it appeared the walls are white adobe and the windows simple, though still massive, panes.

A melodic whistling tune snaps her attention to a man walking into the room. He looked like the same man she had seen before, but not at the same time! The simple wooden door admitted him, but gone were his scrubs and instead now he wore simple cloth clothing that for all the world made her think of peasant wear from days long past! She swallows as he studies her with scrutinizing eyes and a gentle smile. "Hello Delfina, please relax while I get the doctor." He says calmingly, but her confused mind spins as she gawks at him and the room while he dashes out of the door. A moment later, he returns with a woman, catching her sloppily attempting to sit up.

"Let me help you with that!" The man says quickly as he moves forward, he then seems to touch a crystal attached to the bed, causing the upper part to move gently and her torso becomes elevated until she's comfortably resting in a sitting position. He then lets go of the crystal. "There ya go, sorry about that. I'm your nurse, Mohala Mano. This is your doctor, Beyaz Sarica. We've been taking great care of you since the accident!"

"Mohala, I'll take things from here." Doctor Beyaz states as she moves closer, giving her a reassuring smile as Nurse Mohala moves to a table at the other side of the room, placing papers on it and readies a pen. "I know this can all be confusing, distressing, and alarming. I assure you that you are healthy and will be just fine though." She continues, giving her hand a small pat as she contains eye contact. "Can you tell us your name?"

Delfina blinks at her a couple of times, seeing she's wearing fancier clothing that appear more like robes as she tries to take in everything. 'I… I'm Delfina Le Carvennec." She croaks out before a dry cough announces itself. She hears a murmur before Nurse Mohala leaves, then quickly returns with a small cup with water in it. He assists her in drinking slowly before they continue talking.

"Delfina, what's the last thing you recall before waking here?" Doctor Beyaz asks next.

"I was…" Delfina pauses as for a moment all she recalls is darkness. Then, as if being smacked with a bat, it comes rushing back to her with a gasp as though the air was forced from her. "Crash! The crash! Wr-wreck! Oh god!" She feels off kilter as her world starts to spin and everything appears too much suddenly.

"She's panicking!" Doctor Beyaz shouts, causing Nurse Mohala to dart out of the room again as Beyaz grasps her hand and tries to talk to her calmingly. "It's ok Delfina, you're ok. Everyone has made it through the accident, and are all alive." She tells her as Delfina feels her chest constricting and hyperventilates. "Look at me, you're fine." Doctor Beyaz continues as Nurse Mohala comes back and sticks a needle into her arm, pushing something into her.

She passes out before even half of the contents is in her system.

Delfina starts to groggily come to once more, taking a few minutes to recall what all happened as small sounds, almost like beeps, are heard. She looks around the best she could with her weakened state for the source, but can't seem to pinpoint it. Her attention is pulled away though when she hears the sound of heels clicking. The door soon opens and she finds herself at a loss for words at the familiar and bizarre sight before her.

"Finnie! Oh sweet, I'm so glad to see you awake!" Sofia says after gaining her composure, tears instantly springing to her eyes as she places down a vase overflowing with beautiful flowers. She reaches over and messes with another crystal that was hung upon the wall by her bed, then she shuffles a bit and gives her hand a gentle squeeze. "They'll be here soon to help assist you."

Delfina swallows and pulls herself together a bit, though still confused. Sofia was always a beauty, but she can tell the woman was stressed, tired, and obviously concerned but happy. However, the woman before her was also wearing a gown that reached her knees, but was obviously inspired by renaissance times. She was effortlessly elegant, but Delfina just feels herself falling further into confusion.

"It's good to see you awake again Delfina." Nurse Mohala greets with a tired grin as he comes into the room. "You've slept for about twelve hours since our last conversation. How are you feeling now?" He asks as he looks over her, glancing and messing with a few different odd crystals and glancing at a folder with tinted papers in it. He adjusts her position to a sitting one again before taking a seat himself.

"I'm uhh, I'm good… What is today's date?" She asks, trying to make sense of the world around her. Unhindered, her mind starts firing off questions that her mouth obligingly asks. "How long have I been here? What time is it? Am I ok? What happened? What did you inject me with? How much is this going to cost? How injured am I? Or was I injured at all? What about the others in the accident? I-"

"Finnie!" Sofia snaps at her, causing her to startle and look at her with wide eyes. She only now realises that she's crying while the two look at her with sympathy. "Sweetie, calm down, we'll answer all of your questions." Sofia adds gently, giving her a very loose side hug as they turn to the nurse.

"Today's date is January fifth, you have been here for almost six days." Nurse Mohala starts slowly, seeming a bit reluctant but reassuring too. "It's currently about four pm, and please don't worry about any costs right now as your care has already been covered. " He smiles at her before continuing. "The others in the accident are doing just fine as well, just a few issues but nothing that is a serious impairment. Same for you, you're going to be just fine!" He then diverts his gaze to the papers before him as he asks the next questions. "Do you feel dizzy? Nauseous? Any pain?"

"I'm a little dizzy, but I'm not sure if that's because of my little freak out…" She murmurs sheepishly. "How's my bill been paid? Who-?"

"Hookgold has taken responsibility for the entire incident and has already paid for the finest treatment for you for your full recovery." Sofia cuts in, though there seemed to be a hint of anger gleaming behind her eyes. "Never mind that, are you hungry or thirsty?" She turns to Nurse Mohala with raised brows. "She can eat, right?"

"Yes, she can." He replies with a strained smile, then he turns back to Delfina. " We can ask for them to bring you something to eat, but I'm afraid it'll be rather bland for now."

"Oh, I'm not sure about hungry, but I could use a drink…" Delfina replies, but her brow furrows at their interaction and feeling left out of the loop. That's when she realises not all of her questions were answered. "Wait! What about my condition? What were my injuries?"

The two exchange a long, telling look of reluctance before Nurse Mohala clears his throat and looks at her in the eye. "I'm sure the doctor can explain it much better than we can, so you might want to ask her. She'll be here to see you in the morning."

Delfina looks between them and feels anxiety spike. "No, no… Please, just tell me now." She insists, pleading with her eyes even as worry ate at her.

"Finnie, you had bleeding in your brain… a few broken bones as well." Sofia says, not looking at her directly but holding her closer still.

"That's… not good…' Delfina mutters, trying to let that sink in. She looks at the two and her frown deepens. "Is that all?"

Nurse Mohala meets her gaze again before answering. "Please be assured that everything is fine now, but there was a lot of damage to your legs. Both of your legs had broken bones. Your right one had a comminuted break, meaning the bone broke in three or more pieces. That one was a lot of work, but we were able to repair it." He takes a moment, checking to make sure she was following. When she nods, he continues. "Your left leg was crushed in the accident, it was actually pinned for some time. We're sorry, but it was too late by the time you were brought in to save it. We had to amputate it above the knee, but we assure you that we have ways to help you adjust with this." He tells her, hoping that she'd take it as well as everything else so far.

Delfina heard him, but also feels she hadn't at the same time. What does he mean that her leg was amputated? What a rude joke to play on her! Before either could move, she yanks the blanket back, exposing her leg and her stump of a leg. A shrill noise invades her senses, it taking a moment more to set in that it's her screaming. She looks at the two at a loss of what to do, unable to stop herself from screaming.
