Chapter 1 - 1

Be the reason, someone

Smiles today. Or the reason they drink.

Whatever works.

The American dream is something every girl thinks about in her life. About football matches where the whole school comes to support, cheerleaders, the handsome boys, but where does that dream come from? Well let me tell you, you see a movie and BAM, there's the dream. You read a book and BAM, there goes your heart again. Everywhere around you, the American dream is shown, it's like the nasty little stone in your shoe. But even though the dream isn't always right, every girl hopes to wake up and be able to say that she has managed to make that dream come true, and I'm no different.

That's why when I hear my alarm clock go off, I jump right out of bed. This may not seem special, but believe me, I have a deep relationship with Mr. Bed. I open my door from my room and walk to the room over mine. On the door hangs a placard with "Here sits the youth of today" written down. Without standing still, I open the door and sprint into the room. In the middle of the double bed, I see a silhouette of a person. With a smirk, I shout a battle cry and jump on the bed, and so on the person. An Oefp sound can be heard when I come down and I feel the person beneath me gasping for breath.

"You're getting heavy" mumbles Coll, my 19-year-old brother. I gasp for breath and bogusly put my hand on my heart. "Did you just call your sister fat?" I ask fake hurt while I shed a fake tear. In answer, I feel his arms winding around my waist and they push me away from him. Then he hangs above me and smirks. "No, please, I'm sorry. I'm just so glad we're going to America that I wanted to wake you up" I try to say with puppy eyes, but without success. Coll sits on me and starts torturing me. I feel his fingers over and around my belly as a hysterical laugh leaves my mouth while I try to reach for his hands. But Coll is faster and grabs my hands with one hand and continues to tickle me with the other.

"Why wasn't I invited to the fun? I hear a voice asking from the door. Fortunately, Coll hears it too and stops tickling me, giving me time to catch my breath.

"Share my sister with you? Don't think so" says Coll laughing.

"She's my sister's head too, dickhead" says Justin, my other older brother of 20.

Glad about the distraction, I push Coll away from me and walk into Justin's arms. I hear a sound coming from behind me when Coll makes contact with the ground. Glad to be away from torture, I jump into Justin's arms. Justin picks me up immediately and carries me out of Coll's room. Almost at the door, I see Coll staring at me with a cute puppy face, but instead of helping him straight, I stay in Justin's arms and childishly stick out my tongue to him.

"Where should I take you, sister?" Justin asks.

To her room, we leave in 15 minutes' I hear daddy answering in my place.

In my room, I quickly change and look at my outfit in the mirror. My brown pull goes well with my long brown hair that is slightly wavy and light brown eyes that look wide awake, even though it's 4 o'clock in the morning. My black leggings complete my comfy airplane outfit. I keep staring into the mirror and notice my full lips standing in a small smile. Even though I am 18 years old, I am only 1m65. That makes me the smallest of the family, something everyone likes to remind me of.

I didn't realize I was daydreaming until I heard my mom calling me to hurry up so we wouldn't miss our flight. I hurriedly pick up my backpack and walk downstairs. Downstairs I see that all the bags are already in the trunk of the taxi and that everyone is waiting for me. With a small apologetic and shy smile, I get into the taxi. "Are you ready for it?" Coll asks when he puts his arm around my shoulder and pulls me against him. I try to say "yes" as confidently as possible, but deep inside we both know that this is not entirely true.
