Chapter 9 - Recovery And A Lecture

Over the next few days, I was kept in the room, I only saw the old crone Mrs. Rose, Mrs. Flitcroft, and the 2 guards that watched over me day and night so that "nobody would bother me" as they kept telling me. I knew it was to make sure I didn't lose control of whatever this power was, I guess Mrs. Flitcroft had her reasons but I was able to walk to the bathroom by myself when I had to and they always placed my food at the desk by the window that was usually opened for half the day to let out the stale odors that lingered in a room that hasn't been used in some months.

Today was different as I had a visitor. Reed was let into the room by the guards just after I had struggled my way to sit at the desk by the window. He hesitated before he said anything, "how are you doing Bruni?" he asked hesitantly from just in the doorway.

I turned my head over my shoulder so I could see him with one eye, as I did this Reed startled as if expecting the magic that he saw on the day of the battle to be flowing out still, but it was only my regular grey eyes..... mostly.... a slight ring of orange never left my right eye. You could hardly notice it during the day but without a doubt, it was there even now. Maybe that's why Reed looked a bit scared as I looked back at my food and answered, "I'm fine." I said woodenly as I didn't know what else to say.

I was slowly regaining my health. I had as much food as I wanted, the crone that harassed me every morning with her sun in through the window trick always made sure that at least a snack was ready for me at all times as instructed by Mrs. Flitcroft. She knew I would be ravenous for the next fortnight at the least! Magic was always heavy on one's body especially on someone's awakening as she found out many years before when her own power had awakened.

"That's good!" Reed exclaimed with a bit of excitement as he walked over to the empty chair on the other side of the desk. "mind if I sit?" Reed asked cautiously.

"go ahead, I don't bite... much," I said as I grinned at him from the other side of the desk.

Reed then had to guffaw at that as he quickly got comfortable with me after years of being good friends. He then snorted and said, "well it looks like you haven't lost your terrible sense of humor!" he quickly sobered up. "I'm sorry Bruni that I wasn't there to help you when you needed me most..., not that you needed my help" he added afterward. As he shifted uncomfortably on the other side of the desk.

I looked up at him after he said that comment," I don't blame you Reed, but I don't want to talk about it right now" I replied. "even I don't know what happened after... I lost control." I said quietly as I closed my eyes trying to not recall exactly what happened.

After that we lapsed into silence as we were both stuck in our memories of the terrible day." well Mrs. Flitcroft said not to be too long as you are still recovering" Reed said as he got up and patted me on the shoulder before heading to the door and just before he opened the door he said, "I'm here for you my friend." then he walked out the door leaving me in solitude once again.

Not long after that Mrs. Flitcroft walked in and came over to the desk that I was still sitting at before sitting in the now vacant seat that Reed had used but moments ago. "well, that was a short visit, even though I wanted his visit brief I didn't think he would be that quick" she said as she looked at my face trying to gauge how upset I was if I was even upset.

I looked up at her, "Guys don't need to talk much to understand exactly what the other means. It's a boy thing" I responded instantly defensive of my one true friend.

"Boys!" she huffed in frustration as she sighed out loud. "you do know it's okay to show emotion, right Bruni?" she said before leaning forward and looked at me until I looked up at her with my almost grey eyes.

I quickly looked away so as she would stop staring at my eye. "why do I have orange in my eye?' I asked quietly

"All will be explained Bruni in due time," she responded as always whenever a subject about magic had come up. "Tomorrow a mage from the capital will arrive to assess you, and they can explain to you better than I can," she replied

"why can't you tell me!" I asked with a small sigh of frustration at her "you also have magic or mana or whatever you call it don't you?" I muttered as I looked up

Mrs. Flitcroft raised an eyebrow at me and looked at me in the eyes until I muttered a quiet, "sorry" at her.

"Fine. I will explain this much to you so that you can stop pouting at me. Very few people are blessed with the ability to use magic or to use the proper term for it, mana." She said simply before continuing with her impromptu lecture. "I have what's known as the Light Element, I won't go into much but I'm I will tell you that you used fire mana when u lost control. I cannot teach you anything as Fire mages are taught completely differently than Light mages. Light mana is used for healing and illusion magic. Where fire magic is used for outright Explosive destruction and Body enhancement like what you displayed when you sped up to and caught Gale faster than any 15-year-old should!"
