Forest green eyes stared wide eyed at steel grey ones, both pair shining in the dim moonlight. None of the two creatures moved, one too petrified to do so, the other too afraid of scaring away the other. Soft breathing, almost completely silent, as if time had completely stopped.
Though finally the young fawn was the first to dare and move. A small hoof stepped forward, fidgeting unsure, ears slowly perking up as it eyed the two legged creature standing there.
On his part, the moon's child stood completely still, looking carefully at the curious fawn, wondering what it was going to do. It...quite a rude pronoun to use in the wolf's opinion. The young creature though had mixed features, he could not really tell if it even had a gender to begin with, he had never seen any creature like that before.
The small fawn slowly took another step, and then another, slowly starting to circle around the raven haired wolf. And the predator let him do so, trying to observe every move of the little prey. Or what should have been his prey, but he did not consider them as such. He was mesmerized by the young halfling. Half human and half deer, such a peculiar combination.
The fawn's steps were soft and almost soundless against the grass as they circled the moon's offspring carefully, yet filled with curiosity. The halfling then stopped back in front of the wolf, reaching forward to inspect his scent. Smelled like the forest that was oh so familiar to the young fawn.
That's when the tall hunter decided to speak "Can you speak?" he asked as softly as he could, not wanting to scare off the poor little thing.
The small herbivore jumped back in surprise, not expecting the wolf to speak out of the blue like that. They gave him a wary look, before nodding slowly, their messy brown locks moving along at that gesture.
Oh how relieved the young exile seemed, yet kept a neutral expression, not really familiar with simple emotions "May I...know your name, if you have one?" he made yet another question, seeing that the fawn hadn't run away.
The green eyed fawn seemed to ponder whether to answer the question or not. After a while they looked back up at the wolf and spoke with a soft voice "Faelyn....where I come from it means beautiful fairy..." and it was said in what almost was a whisper. Yet that voice was so pure sounding and so melodic.
The hunter nodded in acknowledgment, then spoke himself "My name is Udiel...it means light of the lord...I'm a wolf blood..." he explained calmly
"A child of the moon..." Faelyn added right after "I have heard about your species...you live up on the mountains where there are no forests...the empty lands of snow..."
Udiel seemed surprised of the fawn's knowledge "Yes...we live there...how'd you know?" he asked now curious as well
"Mother told me a lot about our former predators, back in ancient times....so...now that you are here, are you going to eat me?" Faelyn asked with the most innocent gaze
The moon's child was almost moved by such innocence...almost. Though he shook his head "That is not my intent. I do not kill, I tend to scavenge whatever I am able to find..." he replied calmly, slowly moving to sit down now that he saw the fawn way more calm.
Faelyn seemed puzzled by the wolf's words, slowly laying down on the grass as well "But you are not-" they couldn't even finish the sentence because of Udiel's interruption "Scavengers? No, we aren't indeed. That is why I was considered a defective specimen by my clan...so here is there reason why I am here in your land"
The fawn's ears flicked in confusion, tilting their head to the side "So you were considered wrong because...you do not enjoy killing creatures for your survival?..."
Udiel nodded once again "Yes, I was and still am considered against nature. It was also hard being a scavenger up in the cold mountains...food was running low...so I started traveling in order to find a better place where to find food and not starve"
"Oh...but what is that on your eye?" Faelyn asked while pointing towards Udiel's face.
The wolf sighed softly "Just a scar, nothing serious, we get in fights with each other often. We mostly stay as wolves up there, so it is quite easy to hurt each other while scuffling" he explained calmly.
Faelyn frowned in confusion "But...why are you not a wolf now?" they asked once again.
Udiel sighed softly, looking up at the starry sky above them, not really sure himself as of why "I suppose that....I didn't want to be seen as a threat by the inhabitants of the forest..." he muttered in conclusion.
The smaller creature nodded "I see...it was very considerate of you Mr. Udiel..." they said softly, playing with a few strands of grass.
"Mr?...No need of such formalities...I am no one important to pay respects to...I am a simple lone wolf, quite literally..." muttered the other, looking at the fawn a little confused and surprised.
They widened their shining emerald eyes in realization "Oh!...My apologies...shall I call you just by your assigned name then?..."
"Indeed...as I already said there is no need for formalities...we are pretty much equals as far as I am aware, young fawn..." replied the other.
Faelyn was about to reply when they suddenly perked their ears up and standing abruptly, looking around alarmed "It is not safe at this time of the night...for me at least...I must go back to my home...you might not want to eat me, but there are other creatures out here that would love to make a meal out of me..."
Udiel seemed a little disappointed of such a short encounter, but he could only nod "For sure...would you prefer if I accompany you to your hideout? You'd be a less likely target with a carnivore of my tier close to you...." he offered.
The fawn seemed to hesitate a little, but then ended up nodding "Alright...follow me...don't betray my trust please.." they said as they started walking.
The wolf got up and shook his head "I would never...I keep my word..." he said softly, before silently following the four legged herbivore, deep inside of the forest, with the moon and stars watching over them silently.
