Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: The Flashback

I look up and see stars "Guess I got thrown out again" I mumbled out loud. I get up and walk back to the door to see if it's unlocked. It leaves me wondering why I even tried. I went around the side of the house and snuck into the basement through a man-made hole I had hidden. The basement was always the room I snuck back into so I could sleep under a roof. I got comfortable in a corner and fell asleep.

"Wake up you fat shit!" I got water poured onto me "It's time to go move it before I beat the shit out of you!"

"I'm sorry Dad I forgot today was Sunday I'm leaving"

"Next time you eat something without asking your gonna starve that week!" He took a look at me and shouted "DID YOU HEAR ME!"

"Ye- yes sir" I quickly got up and grabbed my backpack and ran up the stairs into the dirty mess that was on the 1st floor. This house was always messy.

I rushed through some trash in front of the front door and left. I set out towards my mom's house about an hour away and just stared at the starry morning sky. I checked my flip phone and it wasn't even 6 yet. I was grateful he always made me leave so early because I never ran into trouble since I started walking back and forth 6 years ago. By the time the sun was in the sky, I had made it to my destination. I walked up to the door and knocked on it.

"Hello Mom It's me, Nate" I knocked once more

"I heard the first two knocks!" Yelled a voice from inside as the door opened I saw that it was my mom "Your dad already tired of you boy don't tell me you stole food again your big enough as it is"

I set my pride aside so I can survive the rest of this summer "Yes ma'am I'm very sorry he only lets me eat something from the fridge once a day so I get hungry"

"You better be grateful you get fed even once or have shelter" She shut the door "I don't want you in this house until you've been outside for a while"

"But what about breakfast?" I asked

"Figure it out you won't die" I couldn't see her face but I knew she was sending me a cold stare through the door but I was long used to being treated like this.

I walked down the road and turned the corner to walk into the local park. I see other kids playing and having fun and get reminded of last year when I had friends until my mom and dad split apart and I had to go to another school convenient enough for both of them. It was so sudden I had no time to make any friends or keep up with any of my old friends. Guess I should walk around the park and try to make new friends here and now. I approached one of the boys

"Hey I'm Nate I live around here can I play with you"

The boy looked at me and said "I don't know you look like a weirdo with all that hair covering your face"

One of the other boys walked up and said "You are pretty fat man can you even keep up with us"

They all started laughing it was the same as trying to make friends in 5th grade with a group of complete strangers. I felt like crying but I gathered my remaining strength and begged

"Please I'll do anything"

"Anything?" One of the boys said they went into a circle and started whispering. After a few moments, they turned around and told me there was one thing I could do

"Ok follow us there is something you need to see," one of the boys said

I followed them into the edge of the park onto a trail that leads into some woods

"Hey are you sure this is safe" I asked

"You said you would do anything just shut up and follow us" replied one of the boys in the back

As I followed them into the woods I couldn't help but feel unsure of the situation.
