Logan POV:
Logan, after giving some of the weapons to Shane, took the bow, which was a very good compound bow, about 12 arrows in a quiver, pulled some snacks like cookies and chocolates bars which he gave to the four kids who probably hadn't have sweets for a while now to which their mothers were grateful.
Back to the bow, I found the bowstring was quite strong, a normal person will not be able to draw it fully, as a hunter I was pretty good with bows, and so
I went straight to the woods after informing the others, with Dale who was sitting on top of his RV offering me a "Be careful out there."
Reaching the woods, with the aim of testing my hunting skills. From hearing, tracking, and of course to try hunting some game.
"..."
I focused on the sounds around me as I moved while keeping my eyes open for any tracks I may find.
…
Half an hour later, I found something that was a Rabbit. A little over 200 yards standing beside a tree.
I took an arrow from the quiver and readied myself as I took in a deep breath, I put the arrow on the bowstring and pulled it. I took a moment before I released the arrows.
FWOSH! WHISTLE!! THUD!!!
The arrow hit its target and went right through it and struck the tree base and a third of the arrow was now inside it.
"Wow...This is quite powerful." I was totally surprised by how much power this bow packed, even having a hard time pulling the arrow that was stuck, fortunately he managed to retrieve it otherwise he'd be one arrow short.
"First game acquired successfully, let's try to get some more." He quickly went deeper into the woods.
…
Later after another two hours with the sun almost down, he went back to the camp with a decent hunt which consisted of 1 rabbit, and 3 squirrels, all of which he skinned before heading to the camp.
Catching the sight of Glenn strolling in the woods near the camp, I decided to pull one on him.
Sneaking around the trees unseen by the guy with Korean origins. I finally reached behind him and slowly crept behind him as my hands grabbed his shoulders
"Urgh ghugh…!"
"Wagh!!" He squeaked in a pitch voice.
"Hahaha!" I couldn't help laughing as Shane and Rick came running with their guns in hands.
"What happened!?!" Both looked at the frightened Glenn and then to me.
"That's not funny! A thought my life was done for." Glenn was mad, understandable since he thought it was real and that a walker got him.
After finally calming down, I looked at Glenn who was still glaring at me.
"You're right, it's not funny. But you should've learned a lesson now." Glenn frowned in thought.
"You got somethin' to tell us man?" Shane was giving me an irritated look.
"This may look like a prank, but take this advice. Never separate from others, especially unarmed, and more so when it's dark. You never know what's lurking around." I explained.
"Why? It's hard for walkers to be in these parts, away from the city. Where they are right now." 'Rick, you're still narrow minded.' Is what I thought after hearing him.
"Let's get back to the camp and I will explain." Logan motioned for them to follow back.
POV End:
…
After explaining the situation to others, Logan changed the part of him pranking Glenn to him being surprised when Logan came from the woods near him, everyone forgot about what happened, after that Logan gave them my hunt to cook for dinner.
The four of us sat down as the trio looked at me.
"How much do you know about Walkers in general?"
"They eat flesh?" Rick said
"They spread by turning other people with their bite, and die if you destroy the brain?" Shane added
"They recognize each other by smell?" And Glenn too, clearly the close contact with walkers still affects him.
"Everything you said is correct, but there is much more to them, certainly more than I know too." Logan starts drawing something on dirt.
They were dots, a lot of them in a square.
"Dots are walkers. The square is the city." Logan explained.
"What does this have to do with what we know about walkers?" Shane impatiently asked.
"Let me explain, I will reach that part gradually." Logan said.
Seeing them quiet, he decided to continue. "Right now the cities are the hotspots for walkers, full with hordes that are numbered from thousands to hundreds of thousands, and possibly millions." Logan took a moment to let them process before he continued.
"Once they run out of games in the cities, they will start moving. Separately or in hordes." Logan started drawing dots outside the square before he showed lines that represent direction.
"They're gonna head everywhere, means it's just a matter of time before they're spread out everywhere in the country, and not only in populated areas like cities, towns… etc." Logan continued, drawing more squares with dots spreading both inside and outside of them.
"You're saying they're gonna reach this place?" Glenn asked as he put more thoughts about it.
"Probably soon, one..." Logan revealed a new thing to them.
""What!?!" The three of them were shocked to the core.
"The other thing is that walkers have a herd instinct." This confused the trio again.
"What is this 'herd instinct' thing?" Rick expressed his lack of understanding.
Logan explained in simple words " herd instinct is a behavior wherein people, animals,... etc, tend to react to the actions of others and follow their lead."
"In the case of walkers, most of them don't go anywhere on their own, they tend to follow one who is moving aka taking the lead, that one can be seen as the 'Alpha' of the horde." Logan dropped another bomb.
"You two may have noticed some walkers following behind you when you camouflaged yourself to reach the construction site." This made Rick and Glenn look at each other before Rick's eyes became wide, Shane's eyes narrowed as he and the rest heard the story.
"You mean that people too can lead walkers wherever they want if they want? if they are using the same trick as us?" Rick couldn't help but find it unbelievable.
"That's right, but a fair warning. There's a high chance the blood and guts of walkers may result in infection, more so if you're using it more often, you're putting rotten and decaying flesh and blood on yourself after all, which can result in catching some flu." Logan knows that although that way of tricking walkers is good, the risk of catching some sort of flu makes it not worth the trouble.
"Excuse me, but dinner is ready." Andrea's sister came to us, I greeted her as others turned to her too.
"Thanks, I hadn't eaten anything since we came back." Logan stood up as the others took this as a sign they're done. But they can't complain that this conversation was very insightful.
"We should be thanking you, you did bring the meat for us, and the other stuff you bought too, you've been nothing short of helpful so far, so thank you." Amy answered with a smile, and Logan followed her the first, chatting on the way to get their portion of dinner.
…
"So you've been a soldier, a hunter, and a weapon instructor?" Andrea asked him with a weird gaze, as everyone got their dinner and were gathering and eating around the campfire.
"Pretty much? I also studied in a Military school since I was seven and after I graduated from High School, it was mandatory that I serve for 5 years at least." Logan informed as others listened, Shane was beside, Rick with his wife Lori leaning her head on his shoulder, with their son Carl with his head on her lap, Beside them was Morales with his wife and kids, then Jacqui and T-Dog, Dale, Glenn was to my left and the sisters Andrea and Amy to my right.
The Peletier family set their own fire a bit away from everyone else, but were still close by.
"So, why didn't you, ugh, stay in the Military?" Amy Asked not knowing if it's alright to ask, but she still did.
"Because I don't like it." He stopped for a moment before he continued
"My old man was a bit forceful, and decided I will be a soldier and follow in his footsteps, basically forcing me to a boarding military school for thirteen years. Because of that I wasn't even there when my mother died in an accident, he himself died during duty three years ago, which made me resign from the military." Logan casually spoke of his mother's death which also surprised them.
"Oh dear, we're sorry for making you remember something like that." Lori beside her husband apologized for basically asking about his personal life which seems to be unpleasant.
"Don't be, I hardly had any attachments to either of them. After all they weren't part of my life for the most part of it, I don't blame them either, most parents, especially fathers love nothing more than to see their sons walk their footsteps." Logan assured them.
"Well, I gotta say they made one hell of a freak, I met the guy when he became a Firearms Instructor at John's place. And believe me when it comes to fighting weapons or not, I'd rather not be his opponent." Shane changed the subject while still talking about Logan.
"Oh right, you were going to John's place to practice at the fire range." Rick remembers how his partner and best friend went regularly to practice with his favorite shotgun.
"Lost some good money betting with this guy, always beat me, he holds the highest score of all the shooting competitions John holds in his place." That was said in a half serious, half joking manner.
"I made a good amount of money from that." Logan admitted.
They continued chatting and getting acquainted for sometime, Rick told his story starting from when he woke up in the hospital.
Logan couldn't help but notice that Shane's eyes were pretty much fixed on Rick's wife the whole story, while she also looked at him from time to time, but she had a different look when Carl told his dad 'Mom said you died', the two were acting weird.
After a little while Ed, Carol's husband which can be described as an a*shole took more logs and put them on their fire making burn even more.
"What're you doing Ed?" Shane became a bit hostile when he turned to the guy.
"What? I feel cold." Ed answered indifferently,
"You made the fire bigger, are you trying to show our place?" Shane berated, seemingly remembering what Logan told him, Glenn, and Rick.
"I said I feel cold, so mind your own business." Ed said again with a tone that seems on edge.
Then he pulled something, something I am familiar with, it was the chocolate bar I gave to the kids. I looked at the little girl Sophia who was looking down while in her mother's embrace.
Shane was about to stand, but Logan beat him to it as he strolled toward Ed with a face that betrayed nothing.
"Where did you get that?" Looking down at the man who was about to eat the chocolate bar, but stopped when he found the guy in front him.
"It's mine, so mind your own business." Ed repeated what he told Shane.
"Sophia, did he take it from you?" Logan ignored the guy and crouched down and pat the girl's head, she looked at him for a moment before she looked down.
"I-I don't eat chocolate, so I gave it to dad." She lied, Logan can tell easily, and he tell she's scared too.
Logan looked at her for a second, before he stood up, and in one move took the chocolate bar from Ed's hand who got agitated and stood up.
"give it back." The guy was like a joke trying to stand against a man that was far bigger than him.
"It's mine. I gave it to the girl, since she doesn't want it, I'm taking it back. Got any problem with that." Logan's face was dangerously close to Ed's, who was clearly intimidated by the cold look Logan gave him, the guy sat back, and Logan went back after he removed the logs Ed threw in the fire.
They chatted a bit more when Logan came back smiling, breaking the tense air. They talked about Merle's brother Daryl Dixon who was apparently out hunting, trying to decide what to tell him and all.
Not long everyone went to sleep but Logan stayed awake to keep watch since he's been an SS, he felt that he can go more than a week without much rest or sustenance, but that will affect his capacity, and he won't try to push himself that far.
Logan did a little patrol around the campsite, and checked the woods every two hours to make sure no walkers were close by.
…
[Next Day]
The next day, Logan passed the kids player around and he headed further into the woods. He discovered a dead deer that was shot with several arrows.
"Ghrgh…"
From behind some trees came a walker which probably followed the deer until it dropped dead. Knowing this is someone's game, Logan took my Kopis and threw it at the walker which penetrated its head, and now it lay dead near the deer.
"Ahhhh! Mom!!" Carl and Sophia who were close by, apparently followed him out of curiosity only to see the walker that is now dead and that frightened them.
Moments later the men gathered, and before long the person who was hunting the deer came out.
"Son of b*tch almost got my deer!" He cursed as he kicked the dead walker.
"Calm down son, the deer is okay." Dale tried to calm the agitated guy.
…
The guy was apparently the one they talked about yesterday, Daryl Dixon. Things went relatively well at first before he went to call for his brother Merle. Rick stepped up and told him what happened.
Surprise the guy cried, before he tried to attack Rick and Shane held him on a chokehold, but Logan interfered and made Shane release him.
After things were explained properly, Rick decided to accompany Daryl while bringing Glenn, and T-Dog who felt he was responsible for Merle being stuck, Lori and Shane at first refused the idea of Rick going back to Atlanta but he stood his ground and he also wanted to bring back the bag he dropped since any weapon the group have is an advantage.
Logan stayed in the camp with others, since they discovered that a Walker came dangerously close to the camp, he stressed on being careful and not to wander separately, especially in the woods.
Amy and Andrea went to the lake probably to try and get some fish, Shane was somewhere discussing something with Lori, while Carl and Sophia were playing with Morales kids, Morales, Jim, T-Dog were the one who Shane gave a gun to. T-Dog carried his with him when they went to Atlanta.
Seeing that Jim and Morales handle the protection of the camp with Dale mentoring the road and the lake, Logan scouts the woods again to see if there are any walkers that may be wandering around.
…
Few hours later Logan came out of the woods, the shirt he recently wore today was filled with some bloodstains, while he had a cloth in hand cleaning his axe.
Morales, Jim who were close by, and Shane who just came from the lake noticed Logan's bloodied clothes.
"The hell is that?" Shane asked
"Walkers, I went to scout the woods, took down sixteen walkers looming around, if they were left like that. They'd probably reach the camp at night." Logan informed.
"That makes them seventeen with the one from morning, this doesn't look good at all." Jim said with his hand on the holstered glock 17 on his waist.
Shane wiped his hand over his face. "This place ain't safe anymore, we have to head somewhere safe soon."
"But the question is where?" Morales agreed but also was curious about what would
"We should withhold that until everyone is gathered. For now we're in the clear since I went as far a mile away from here to clean all of those." Logan suggested holding this talk for when until everyone gathers.
