Stared at the ring, I was elated beyond measure,
Didn't want to think about the present but the future,
The promise of a a lifetime was enough pleasure,
Been my best friend, didn't see any failure,
Everything was meant to work out, hadn't we made sure?
From the tests to the errors to the solutions to problems unsolved,
Nothing could dampen this spirit, it was in full measure,
Started with the little corrections, I was silent and accommodating,
He wanted changes, I felt they were expected,
She wanted expectations met, I thought they were naggings,
The little raised voices were not nipped in the bud,
Had to keep up appearances, smiles became pasted,
He was distant, I thought he cheated,
She was cold, I think she no longer trusts me,
One had to own up but who would bell the cat,
Family intervened but it was beyond repairs,
Didn't know pride was the cause, everything crumbled before the truth manifested,
What could've been avoided was welcomed with open arms instead,
He could've been more patient and listened to reason,
She could've handled those buttons and pressed them when necessary,
The therapist couldn't fathom why or how these nowadays couples seek divorce before opinions,
Probably because lies aren't the bedrock but the foundation of every single word,
The two best friends remembered they saw something whilst they were young,
It was their promise to each other about never letting go,
Founded on their ability to listen to each other,
Fashioned out of the need to make a difference, they had drafted this promise card,
But had forgotten it amidst the wedding gifts,
Now seen, thy couldn't stop staring at it,
And remembered sadly the best gift they could've have had was each other,
For daring to make a difference amidst the madness,
They were considered mad but they no longer cared,
Especially when they saw the marriage counselor filing for divorce.
