Sitting here, in the low lit room, the only thing you can hear is the sound of breathing and people nervously shifting in their place.
All eyes peeled on the door. Waiting in anticipation.
"Squad 4 come in, this is squad 3. We are rapidly moving up on your position." It sounds from our coms, breaking the silence and startling me. I would have fired my gun if I had my finger on the trigger.
"Received." The Lieutenant answers, a short and concise answer. Revealing how tense she is.
'I guess even the Lieutenant is a human being after all.'
"You heard it, settle down a bit and don't shoot our own men once they walk through that door." She says in a stoic tone, with a hint of sarcasm. Her words slightly improves the tense atmosphere.
We'll have backup in a bit, that makes me feel relieved. Now all we need is squad 1. Hopefully 30 should be enough, to take down this beast.
"Lieutenant?" I ask probingly.
"Yes recruit?" She answers in a low voice.
"Wouldn't it be best to ask for squad 5 to join us?"
'Yeah, why aren't they down here with us? Wouldn't it be better to have more people?' I rationalize.
"Recruit, if we pull squad 5 down here, then what is to stop the creature from rampaging through the upper floors?" She answers in a snarky tone. Like what I asked is a stupid question, and it is.
'Right? how could i forget? This thing can tear a hole in the side of the ship so of course it can just go past us. That's why we need a last line of defense. I feel dumb, this is basic stuff. Guess the nervousness must really be getting to me.' I just silently accept her answer.
*Screeech* A loud screech of the beast rings out from far away.
"Squad 4, command, this is squad 1. We won't make it. Be warned, it has Esper abilities. It can move things, pretty heavy thiiiNGSAAAAAHH!!----" An abrupt stop of the message with the dying scream of our comrade sounding out from our coms. Leaving behind a horrifying discovery. An Esper. Mental abilities that can have all kinds of different effects. This one having telekinetic capabilities, it would explain a lot. How it can take on a whole squad in a short period time.
"Squad 4, squad 3. This is command speaking. You are not capable of handling an alien life form with Esper abilities. Gather up and extract together AFAP. I will not lose more men to this thing defending a cargo that attracts Espers." The general says in a angry voice. Clearly he had been misinformed of the dangers of the cargo. Which only meant one thing for us, get out or die.
'You've got to be kidding me. I can't believe this shit. An Esper? am I cursed or something?' I think to myself as we gather up and start moving out the door. As we move back through the bloodied room squad 3 joins us, a tall and rank man in the lead, and we together move towards the closest exit.
"Lieutenant Svenson good to see you alive." Our squad lead says to the tall man as we move through the corridors at a fast pace.
"You too Lieutenant Jones, lets get out of here before we turn to blobs of guts giving the walls a new paint job" He answers with a cynical remark, with a tinge of humor in his voice.
'What a sick sense of humor.' I think to myself while I keep moving.
'But on second thought, I guess this is the kind of humor you got to have in this kind of line of work'
"Agreed" It sounds from my squad lead. The comment having almost no effect on her, almost as it was a casual remark of the weather.
