Chapter 4 - Chapter 4

Laena shuffles her way through the snow, getting closer to the village. She hears the mutter of men talking and laughing. Her hand tightens on her bow. She slides under the last row of pines. Placing her back against the small wooden hut.

"Now tell me pointy ears, where the hell is she. We know she is living in this village." Laena peeks around the hut. A large man with bright red hair is crouching down. There laying on the ground is a village elder and only healer, Beiric.

"She left a long time ago." Beiric spits a mouth full of blood at the man. Another man standing to the side, kicks Beiric in the face. He slumps into the snow. The large man stands, whipping the blood away.

One of the doors creeks open. Laena hugs to the hut. She can see the dead bodies laying on the ground. The men coming out, each pulling their pants up and tighten their belts.

She pulls the string of her bow tight. Her eyes locked on the man. She lets it go, as the arrow leaves the bow she nocks another arrow. She fires again. A third one follows it. Three of the seven drop, arrows sticking out of their throats.

The other four men turn to look from where the arrows have come from. A man with a bow turns, an arrow nocked. He starts to pull the string back. He starts to pull the bow up. Just as he sees her, a arrow shoves itself through his eye. His head snaps back. The other three each take off. The one who kicked Beiric runs to the hut next to hers.

Laena races around the next hut. The man sees her first. He lowers his shoulder knocking her to the ground. The tumble in the snow. She pulls out her second to last arrow. She sees the dagger in the man's hand as they push each other away. He rushes forward, swiping the blade at throat.

She side steps the blade but it just manages to slice her arm. The warm blood trickles down her arm. She reaches up with the arrow and slams it into the man's throat. He coughs, blood floods out of his mouth.

"I don't know who in the five hells you are but if you want to save this dam pointy ear bastard, ye best walk were I can see ye." She rips the arrow out of the man's throat. The blood sprays all over her face. Her white hair turning a dark crimson color.

She nocks the bloody arrow. Pulling the string tight, she walks around the hut. Her eyes locked down the row of huts. The large man with red hair standing behind Beiric. A small sword at Beirics throat. The large man doing his best to hide behind him.

"Put the bow down girl. I'll make sure you die a painlessly." He shakes Beiric. "I'll even make sure he dies quickly too." She looks closer at the large man, a pink scar runs across his face.

"Laena, this is not your fault. Do not worry about me. Head south. In a forest near Zion, you will find something you seek."

"Shut-up. Put the arrow down." He shakes Beiric. Waving his sword around. Laena pulls the string tighter. She knows she can take the shot, she can hit the man in the face and save Beiric.

"Fire-ball." Laena looks to the left, a ball of fire is closing in on her. She jumps to the side. She sees a man in a black robe, in his hand a a wooden staff. A small orange ball starts to glow again. Laena pulls the string back, the arrow launches. It slams the man in the robe right through the chest. The orange ball disappears.

Laena pulls the last arrow out. The sound of steel ripping through flesh rings in her ears. She turns to see a blade tip stick out of Beiric chest. The large man behind him, a grin across his whole face. He lets Beiric go, pulling the blade out. Beiric falls with a thud.

"Looks like its just the two of us now, huh girl." He sticks his tongue out, licking the blood off his sword. His grin, she knows he's waiting for her to shoot her arrow. She only has one left. She beat the last man, but she kind of had the element of surprise. This, this is a one-on-one fight. Attack from this range is her best option. Blade to blade will only get her killed.

Laena takes a deep breath. She pinches the end of the arrow, pulling it back. Her eyes narrow, looking I to his. They are dark green, they seemed possessed by a wild creature. He kicks off the ground dashing forward. His sword up close, ready to block the shot.

She pulls back, he closes hard the distance. Pulling his arm back, going to chomp with the sword. He takes another step. The sword moving forward. Laena drops to her knees. Pulling the bow up sideways. He tries to stop. His feet sliding in the snow. She lets the arrow got the thump of the bow string as it slaps across her arm.

He swings his sword. He jumps done towards her. Let's go of the bow, rolling out of the way. She spends of the ground, sliding into crouch. She pulls both daggers out. Her eyes never leaving him. He stands up, the tip of the arrow sticking out his back.

"Ha, I really thought I could block it. If you…" his feet give out, he slips, landing on his butt. "Ever get to… Helm Island," he coughs, blood spats onto the snow. "Find a man that looks like me," he takes a deep breath in, wheezing. "Tell him, I'll see him when I see him."

He falls flat of the ground. The arrow pushes the rest of the way through him. She drops her daggers, rushing over to Beiric. She rolls him over, placing his head on her lap. She feels the warm tears dripping down her face.

"Child…" His voice whizzes. "You are not the last of your kind." He twist his body, picking his arm you, she reaches out taking his hand. Pulling it to her face. "Head south. You will find the one who will guide you."

His hand loss all strength. She feels the weight of his body. She lets the hand go, holding on to his head. Her ribs hurting as she squeezes, unwilling to let go.

Laena stands from the frozen ground. She took the time placing all of her people inside a clean hut. Holding a lite torch, she throws it into the hut. The dry wood inside catches fire. She left the bodies of their attackers outside. The wolves would be in soon to eat them. She slings her bow over her back. A full quiver already there. She ties a nap snack to her waste. Walking south out of her village.

A dark look upon her eyes as she glares at the mountains ahead of her. She will do what Beiric had told her to do. One day she is going to avenge her people for the things that have happen to them.
