Chapter 9 - Chapter 9

With an hour going by as the group headed towards Northern Philadelphia, Blake noticed that there were a lot more 'Infected' in the area than she originally thought. She had hoped that there would be less 'Infected' along the way, hoping that this camp was truly safe for them. Logan had been doing very well with driving with Blake's help, in the backseat, Liam and Scarlett had fallen asleep. This left Blake and Logan the only ones awake in their car, in Clarke's car, Iris and Jaime had fallen asleep. Clarke kept the channel on the walkie open so that if anyone was in trouble, they would hear about it. In Jeremiah's car, Penelope had taken over driving while Jack and Piper had fallen asleep. Penelope looked at the time on the radio panel, surprised that it was now six in the morning, Jeremiah had yet to fall asleep because he was too worried about the state of the rest of the world. "Jeremiah, why don't you go to sleep? You've been up for most of the night, you deserve some sleep." Penelope spoke softly as she didn't want to wake the kids, "I'm fine, sweetheart. I don't need any sleep, if anyone needs sleep, it is you, my love." Jeremiah looked up from his book, "No, you're not fine, Jeremiah. Get some sleep, I will be fine. You need it more than I do, you've been doing most of the driving." Jeremiah sighed, knowing this wife was not going to take no for an answer.

"You're not going to let this go, are you?"

"No, I am not."

"Fine, I'll go to sleep if that makes you feel better."

Another hour goes by without problems, when Logan notices that they are low on gas. Since Blake and Scarlett were still sleeping and he didn't want to wake them, he decided to talk to the others over the walkie. "Hey Clarke," He pressed the button, "What's up, Logan? Is everything going alright?" He asked, at this time, Jamie had woken up after getting a few hours of sleep. Clarke insisted that she go back to sleep but Jaime insisted "Uh... It's going. Blake and your sister are still asleep and I noticed that we are low on gas. Is there a place that we can stop?" Blake asked, Jamie pulled out a large map and started looking. She traced her finger over the highway they were on, finding a farm that could shelter them and possibly a place to find gas.

"There's a farm not too far from the highway." Jamie started, "We could get off the highway and head there. It's possible the owners kept gas stocked at the farm." She suggested.

Logan thought for a moment, a feeling of unease washing over him as he thought about what could possibly be on the farm. "Even though I don't think the farm is a good place to find supplies let's try it anyway," Logan answered.

"Copy that Penelope?" Clarke asked.

"Yeah, I copy."

"What exit are we supposed to get off on?" Logan asked, "We need to get off at Exit 24, just follow me and we'll get there soon." Clarke suggested.

Logan followed exactly what Clarke said, Penelope following behind Logan closely. Blake shifted in her sleep, feeling something was different about the car ride that woke her up. "Where are we?" Blake asked, her voice sounding groggy from sleep. She sat up straighter, looking out the window as the sun was coming up. "We're running low on gas, so we're going to stop at a farm to see if we can find some there," Logan explained.

"Why a farm?"

"I don't think there would be any gas left at a gas station, Jaime suggested we stop at a farm. It's possible that this farm could be a place for us to stay in case things happen and the refugee camp." Logan explained. "Alright," Blake brushed the stray strands of hair out of her face, as she adjusted her seat. She looked in the back seat, a small smile stretching across her face as she watched Liam scoot closer to Scarlett, the two of them sleeping peacefully. Logan briefly looked in the rearview mirror, a small smile forming as he saw this. "You know, I don't I ever truly thanked you for saving me and my brother back on that highway," Logan spoke. "There's no need to thank me... I was just doing what anyone else would do." Blake shrugged, "Nah, I seriously doubt that. Most people in an apocalypse would care more about themselves and their families' safety first. You threw that out the window and risked your own wellbeing to save Liam and me from the 'Infected' when you didn't have to... I just want to say thank you."

"Ah, it's no biggie."

"Hey, we're coming up on the exit." Clarke spoke into the walkie, "We need to stay on alert since we have no clue what we're driving into." The three cars drove off the exit ramp, heading into town. Blake thought it was a good idea to wake Liam and Scarlett up in case anything happened, "Scar, wake up." Blake reached in the back and tapped her best friend on the lap, Scarlett woke with a start. "What?" She asked, sitting up in alert. "Relax, everything's fine... Well, not completely fine. We're still in the middle of a zombie apocalypse and-" Blake rambled, "Blake!" Scarlett shouted, "Sorry," Blake apologized. Her shout woke Liam up, who stretched out his arms "Why'd you wake me?" She asked, brushing her hair into a ponytail. "We have to stop for gas, so we had to get off the highway."

"Well, where are we going to get gas? I'm pretty sure the gas stations are all empty and raided by now." Scarlett shifted her eyes from Blake to Logan, "Jaime found a farm on the map, so we're headed there now." As they got into town, there was an eerie silence that filled the air. Not a sound could be heard, houses were boarded up and some stores were raided.

"It's too quiet," muttered Iris. "Where is everyone?"

Suddenly, Jamie shouted from the passenger seat. "Clarke, hit the brakes!"

A car lay overturned ahead, blocking the whole road. Clarke slammed on the brakes and swerved to avoid it, tires squealing. Their car skidded to a halt a few feet from the wreck. "Logan, watch out!" Logan slammed his foot down on the brakes, the tires squealed as the car skidded to a stop just two feet away from Clarke's car. Penelope came to a slow stop since she had maintained at least three feet behind Logan, the stop waking Jeremiah and the children up. For a moment, no one moved as they caught their breath. Then Clarke spoke into his walkie. "Logan, Penelope, we've got a problem. There's a crashed car blocking the road up ahead."

"Copy that, we see it too. I'm pulling over now," Logan responded tensely. Clarke urged Jaime to stay in the car with Iris while he went to check it out. "I'll go check it out, stay it in the car with your brother." Blake said, Logan nodded and unlocked the car, both girls heading over to the accident. Jeremiah urged his wife to stay in the car with the kids in case something happened, he closed the car door behind him and headed over to Clarke, Blake, and Scarlett. In the eerie silence, even their quiet footsteps seemed too loud. They approached the crashed car. Inside, slumped over the steering wheel, was a corpse - or what remained of it. "Well, shit... This accident looks like it happened not that long ago." Blake suggested the four remained silent as they took a moment. Scarlett looked away from the accident, the wind blowing a light breeze past as she saw a small fire burning in the distance.

"Let's check around and keep moving," said Logan grimly. "There's nothing we can do here."
