Chapter 10 - Chapter 10

Blake's pov

After coming across the car that blocked the rest of the road, we found a way to get around it. But since we were extremely low on gas, we had to stop and look for some. Scarlett and Logan raided the nearby cars, while Clarke and I checked the nearby mini-mart. we had found. The others raided the cars, trying to find any useful supplies we could take with us. The gas station was eerily quiet and it gave me a bad feeling, I sneezed as soon as we walked in since there was a lot of dust in the air. "Bless you," Clarke smiled as he walked past me, "Thanks," I caught up with Clarke, grabbing a basket to put stuff in. Hopefully, we will find things that are useful here but I highly doubt as it hardly looked like anything was left. Clarke thought it would be a good idea to split up, that way we could scour through the aisles and find supplies. If anything happened, all we had to do was shout for one another since the mini-mart wasn't that big. As I walked down the aisle, I got this eerie feeling that I couldn't shake off which was starting to bother me. I found the medicine aisle, which had nearly been picked clean by whoever came here before us. I sighed, throwing the leftover gauze pads, bandages, over-the-counter pain medication, and even some cold medication for kids and adults. I walked down the other side of the aisle, throwing other things in when something made me stop in my tracks. I paused as I heard a thump in the next aisle over, the sound of dragging footsteps made me even more worried about what was around the corner. I stood quiet, held my breath, and stayed in my spot for another minute. Knowing that anything could be around the corner, I reached for my knife and took it out. With a quick, silent movement, I inched closer to the corner, ready to strike if necessary. The dimly lit aisle cast eerie shadows around me, heightening my senses. As I peered around the corner, my heart raced at the sight before me. An 'Infected' was hunched over a dead body, tearing through the stomach of the person that so happened to its victim. My stomach lurched at the sight, making me want to puke but I couldn't draw attention to myself. I took one small step back but accidentally stepped on a bag, causing me to stop in my tracks. The 'Infected' stopped what it was doing and slowly turned its head around, the cold and dead grey eyes met mine and I panicked. The 'Infected' lunged towards me, its twisted features contorted in rage. I moved backward and tripped over a random can on the floor, causing me to fall back onto the shelf beside me. I let out a pained groan, as the 'Infected' grabbed onto me and pinned me against the shelf.

"SHIT!" I shouted, struggling to keep the 'Infected's mouth away from my neck. The 'Infected' snarled and thrashed, saliva dripping from its gnashing teeth. I could feel its hot breath on my skin as I fought to push it away. With each passing second, the weight of its body pressed down on me, threatening to overpower my weakening grip. The chaos around us only added to the intensity of the moment, the clatter of objects falling to the ground a discordant symphony to our struggle. Fear surged through me, fueling my desperate attempts to fend off the relentless creature. I continued fighting, knowing that I wasn't going to let this thing overpower me and end my life when I had no clue if my family was even alive. Over the chaos, I could hear Clarke calling for me but I couldn't pay attention to him at the moment. With a surge of adrenaline, I swung my knife, aiming for its head letting out a shout. The blade connected with a sickening thud, and the creature let out a guttural howl. Blood splattered onto the shelf and me as it stumbled back, momentarily stunned. Taking advantage of the momentary reprieve, I pushed myself off the shelf and took a moment to just breathe as the 'Infected' died. In the background, I could hear my name being called as I stared at the floor.

I heard a groan behind me, making me flinch and turn just as another 'Infected' appeared. It grabbed me violently, causing me to scream and stumble backward into the shelf, knocking it over. I let out panicked screams, fighting as hard as I could to keep its mouth away from me. Before the 'Infected' could get any closer, the 'Infected' was ripped off of me and stabbed through the eye which killed it. The 'Infected' fell to the ground with a resounding thud, as I flinched and started hyperventilating. I stood to my feet, scrambling off of the shelf to hold myself up. "Blake!" I jumped when a hand touched my shoulder, I went to stab whatever it was that touched me but was stopped when I found myself face-to-face with Clarke.

"Hey, it's me! It's just me!" He placed a hand on both of my shoulders, I lowered my hand as he pocketed my knife. Without hesitation, I threw my arms around him and hugged him tightly as tears started to fill my eyes, the adrenaline starting to wear down. It was then that I realized that it was Clarke who killed the second 'Infected', he probably heard me screaming when the first one appeared and finally reached me when he saw me being attacked. "Hey, hey! It's okay. You're okay." He held me close as I sobbed quietly, I could tell that he was looking down at the 'Infected' that I killed and the one that he killed. He continued to console me as I tried to calm down, the entire ordeal was terrifying.

"You're okay, I've got you. I've got you, it's alright. You're safe now." He whispered, rubbing circles on my back with his hand.
