Chapter 20 - Chapter Twenty

The following day, Thomas stayed the night with his grandparents since Liam did not come to the cafe. Nor was he at the house when Avery tried bringing him home after, unlike Liam not to show up somewhere or that he didn't call after not going to the cafe. After Avery gets Thomas to school, she drops by the police department to see if her son is there? Honestly hoping that her baby boy is alive, which is every mother's worst nightmare with that dreadful feeling that the last time they see their child might be the last time.''Your alive, thank god I can stop thinking that something terrible didn't happen to you,'' states Avery walking into his office to see Liam in his office, relieved that he is alive but is now confused?

''Momma hi ''says Liam looking from his desk, as he hears his momma's voice. He assumed that she would come by the Peppermint Police Department to see if he was alive after him ditching them after Thomas's play last night? ''Well, you don't look injured, so now I can stop being worried and ask what even happened last night?'' asks Avery wondering if something went wrong or happened last night? Unsure of the details and wanting to know what happened?

''I just needed some space and to be alone, after something that Hazel told me last night. Anyway, it doesn't matter; my main concern is Thomas? How was he last night? Did he get to school this morning ''asks Liam to focused on his boy, which is how he should be his main priority, not some woman in his hometown, temporarily and could be leaving any day?

''Thomas is fine, however was confused & upset about how you didn't show up to the family cafe for Peppermint cocoa after you were the one who suggested the idea in the first place. After that hoping that you would have been at your house & and when. You weren't, I used my key to your house and grabbed his stuff for the night at our house, and he spent the night. I then brought him to Holly's cafe for breakfast before bringing him to school this morning, so what's going on with you. It's very unlike you to not show up for your family when you say you are going to?'' asks Avery curiously, hoping that he isn't going back to his old ways. The way he acted days after she died, Liam had taken a massive step since that very day, and it seems as he is reversing.

''Hazel told me last night that she thinks I should reconsider going to a grief group for widowers. Makes me wonder where she even got the idea?'' asks Liam curiously? Who could have put her up to it? As Avery is suspicious if Liam knows that it was her who put Hazel up to it or not? The suspense is eating her away inside. However, if she tells her son that it was? Who knows if he will speak to her again?

"I have no idea, bubba, but we will find out. Can I get you anything to eat? " asks Avery, not telling him that it was her yet. Thinking that Liam might decide to leave Peppermint for good if she pushes him too far? '' Yes, please can you go to the cafe and get my usual hot coffee black & an egg white omelet with mushrooms & spinach and thank you momma '' tells Liam on his order to his momma. He tends to stick to the same thing every morning for years, which makes Avery wonder if he is against change? Maybe that's why he doesn't want to accept that Zoey is gone & to open his heart for Hazel.''Your welcome; what about a bit of cream or sugar in that coffee? Or maybe a non-egg white omelet?'' suggests Avery, seeing if her son reacts to change? '' No, thank you, I will have my usual ''states Liam. Not interested in change & tends to stick to his similar ways, which also drove Zoey crazy from time to time. Even at home, she would try & change up her recipes, and he would always say,'' no, why would you change it up the way you made it before was great''. Maybe that is why he moved back to Peppermint after graduating from Castleton because he was against change? Although they both wanted to move back and create a life for themselves in the town. Liam and Zoey met one another and grew up in the same town that their son is now. This makes you wonder who was against changing more? What is it, Liam or Zoey?

''Are you sure?'' asks Avery to think back if something happened in his childhood that she missed something to where he is against change? Wishing that she had a time machine to go back & see what was missed through Avery's eyes as a mother.''Yes, momma, I'm sure, ''says Liam going back to his work and is becoming more like his dad than he even realizes how much. He is truly like a spinning image of Jeremy in so many ways, to where he likes things a certain way, is very against change is a family man who always puts his family first before anything else.''Do you wanna come with me to the cafe & have breakfast together?'' asks Avery realizing that they haven't spent a lot of time together lately.''Uh, maybe later; I am pretty busy at the moment. Can we take a rain check and possibly meet for lunch?'' asks Liam. To avoid facing & brushes things off as usual & off to the side until he is ready to discuss it on his terms.

''You can't take an hour out of this morning to go out to breakfast with me, ''tells Avery wanting to spend some quality time with her son? Considering it's something that doesn't happen that often, it has always seemed last before Zoey, Thomas, or work stuff. To where Avery has never been a priority? She was thinking with Zoey now gone? Maybe things would change? However, it doesn't seem that things are going the way Avery hoped things would be?

'' Momma, I have this town to keep safe? Plus, I am running for mayor; I need to keep working right now, but later for lunch, okay just not right now?'' tells Liam, not seeing how much he is hurting his mom in the long run?
