Chapter 18 - Interrogation and Confrontation

The police and Pathogen Hunters rushed around the gym, swabbing fingerprints.

They were making their way to Markus, Kayla, and Byul at a quick pace. I began running over to them quickly, but a Pathogen Hunter shoved me to the ground and began handcuffing me. I tried to scream that I didn't do anything, but they didn't listen. They dragged me away, Markus was also on the ground and handcuffed. Some other male students were also handcuffed and taken away.

Something was held to my mouth, and before I knew it, I had passed out.

When I awoke, I was in a locked room. It looked to be an interrogation room. There was a man in a chair, waiting for me to say something.

I gently asked, "Hey... why am I... here?" still slightly dazed.

"You know why." The man said, glaring at me.

"I never hurt the church people... I wouldn't be able to..." I said, trying to prove my innocence.

"Right. Of course not." he sarcastically said, "listen kid. There were fingerprints around the church, and your fingerprints were one of them."

I sat in disbelief. This cop was accompanied by a boy with unkempt brown hair, slithering down his face and across his eyes.

He was also looking at me but was calmer. That's when he began speaking in a deep voice.

"We don't have too much time. What DO you know?" He asked.

I sat silently for just a moment, then speaking the truth. "I went there once... to kill the old man, but I couldn't. He had killed my parents and I... still couldn't... so I left."

One of them spoke again, the policeman. "Why would the church kill your parents? How does this correlate?"

I looked up at him, ready to lie. "I don't know. My parents were innocent civilians, yet they were killed... like animals." Two lies, actually.

I was questioned a lot more, but finally, a woman entered the room with a folder in her hand. She gave it to the man with unkempt hair and he read it. "Let him go. He has an alibi. Instructor Miko of the Pathogen Hunters checked on the students around the time, and he was fast asleep."

That was kind of creepy, but I'm glad he did, as it just got me out of there.

I was waiting inside the waiting area, but not for another interview, but for Markus, who I had seen enter the room I was just in.

He was in there for almost an hour before coming out, his alibi being that Kayla saw him.

We left quickly, hating the aura of the place.

Not even an hour later, we were just calmly exploring the town when Police sirens began going off. We turned and saw them coming down the street we were on, which was quite crowded with people, yet they had obviously seen us. Markus dragged me into an alleyway, but it was a dead-end.

"Why are we running?!" I tried to ask, but we both fell. When I stood up again, the cops were blocking off the exit to the alleyway.

One of them was talking on the radio, they all had their guns aimed at us. More specifically... at Markus.

I turned to look at him and one of the cops told me to step to the side. I did as he asked, but Markus wasn't listening to them. They told him to put his hands up, and to walk to them slowly.

He instead pulled a blade and threw it into one of the cop's knees. The cop screamed in agony while Markus ran up and started hitting them with everything he had.

A moment later... the smell of gunpowder, my ears ringing from the loudest sound I think I'd ever heard before. Markus pretty much flew back, an indent on his forehead proved my thoughts correct. They had shot him... in the head.

His eyes were rolled back and he came crashing to the ground on his back. The indent began profusely spurting a small stream of red.

Blood.

The same splattering sound as when Mom was killed. Her blood, covering the window... spurted... onto the window.

"M-markus?" I pleaded, my face turning pale.

"Target Eliminated... we'll bring the body and injured officers to the station." One officer said over the radio.

My head... it ached. The sound of the gunshot echoed around me. The smell of iron, of blood.

What happened next to me... was a blur.

[3rd Person]

Cal raised his hands to his head. Screaming painfully. His nails seemed to grow pointy and sharp, so did his teeth. His eye color changed from dark brown to red, glowing faintly. The cops began shooting, but the bullets were not hitting him. He screeched and they quickly covered their ears.

One thought filled Cal's mind.

"They killed my friend."

He rampaged, beating down the cops, not in control of his own actions, not seeing what he was doing. He ended up knocking everyone down, blood spilled from different slashes on their bodies, but none were dead.

Cal looked back to Markus, and tears filled his eyes, the emotions brought his teeth back to normal, his nails back to the flat, and his eyes back to a dark brown.

He crawled over to Markus, but Markus wasn't moving at all.

Cal stood up and wiped tears out of his eyes and off of his cheek with his sleeve. He ran out of the alleyway and didn't look back as more sirens approached.

I remember running away from everything that just happened. Getting on the train, and decided to make it to my hometown and hide out for the rest of my cursed life.

Luckily, there was no need.

Police entered the train and pulled me to the ground. I tried to fight back, but the power from before was now gone.

I was taken to my hometown anyway, but to see The President of the area.

I sat down in front of Imode.

"Are you surprised you aren't dead yet?" She asked, looking at me angrily.

I stayed quiet... I remembered the Pathogen that was murdered- no... killed in the town for having invaded it in the first place.

"Cal. You could have just told me." Imode said, much calmer now. I looked up, not understanding what she was saying.

"I heard from someone that you are half-human, half-pathogen. I have a question for you." She stopped and cleaned some dust off of her desk.

"Have you ever killed someone to eat them, or had the urge to eat people?" she asked, which I instantly told the truth.

"No! I didn't want to tell anyone... because I didn't want to die! Like they killed Markus! I attacked them... because they killed him!" I yelled, almost on the verge of tears again.

"But he's not dead," Imode said, as the door clicked open. I turned around.

Markus was standing there, the indent was still there, but was healing. I turned back to Imode and began questioning how he was healing. My first thoughts were that he was a half-half like me.

"He came forward to tell me he is a Pathogen."

I widened my eyes and looked back at Markus.

"That crazy guy on the train, remember how he talked about some boy he tried to escort from the city? That was me. The Pathogens infected me as I tried to escape the church. I used to be human... but when I became a Pathogen, I never had the urge to eat or kill anyone, that's why Imode's letting me live."

All of this was... puzzling. It made no sense at all.

What the fuck is going on?!
