Chapter 20 - 20

CHARLIE'S POV

Demi, her bodyguard, and I were on our way to where we were going to film my interview for Demi's documentary that comes out in a couple weeks. I'm the last one they need for interviews and then they'll be able to announce the release date.

"You're going to be there? Right?" I asked my older sister for what seems like the billionth time.

"I promise I'm going to be there the whole time." Demi answered calmly, not getting sick of me asking the same question once again.

Max, Demi's bodyguard, pulled into the parking lot of the place. We all got out once the car stopped and we put on our masks. We proceeded to enter the building.

"Hey! This must be Charlotte?" A man with light brown hair and a slight mustache and beard asked Demi.

"Yes, this is. Charlie, meet Michael D. Ratner." Demi introduced us. I waved shyly at him as he smiled at me.

"You can sit down in that chair over there and take off your mask." Michael told me and pointed to the chair. "Demi, you can sit next to her if you would like or stand behind the camera."

Demi decided to sit in the chair next to me and she took off her mask as well.

"We would love for you to tell as much of the stuff you can remember. Okay?" Michael told me as he set up the camera.

"Everything?" I questioned, needing a confirmation. Michael and Demi both said yes. I sighed as I looked down at my hands.

"Whenever you're ready, baby girl." Demi spoke comfortingly.

"I remember, the night of and the morning of when everything happened, I was at her place with her and her assistant." I began saying.

(A/N: after watching the documentary I know this didn't actually completely happen but it's too much work to fix a recent chapter I did of this a while ago)

"Mom and Dad thought we could do some bonding. I knew something was off about her for a month or two, but I could never figure out what it was. I just assumed she was tired from touring and working on a documentary of behind the scenes of her Tell Me You Love Me Tour." I looked down at my hands again.

"You got this, Char." Demi grabbed ahold of my hand.

"When I woke up, Natalie, who was her cook at the time, was cooking breakfast before Demi had to leave for a doctor's appointment she scheduled. Natalie and Kelsey told me to go wake Demi up before her other assistant, Jordan, got there to pick her up. I went upstairs for Demi's room and tried waking her up. When she wouldn't wake up, I thought she was pulling some kind of prank, since she loves pulling pranks. That's when I realized she wasn't. I called Kelsey up and both her and Jordan came running in. Jordan ended up calling Max so he rushed over and Jordan went downstairs to call the paramedics." I let out a shaky breath, tears threatening to fall.

"We can take a break if you want." Michael suggested. I shook my head no before I continued.

"I remember that when the paramedics arrived, they ran upstairs to her room, got their Narcan out, trying to bring her back to life. There was a point where her body turned blue, and that was when Kelsey took me out of the room so I couldn't see that. I was scared. I was scared I was going to lose my older sister who I always looked up to." I paused for a bit.

"When we arrived, she was immediately taken to the I.C.U. Jordan then proceeded to call our Mom and she told her that Demi overdosed. You could hear Mom talking through the phone asking if she was okay. Jordan replied saying 'She's breathing, we're at the hospital, but she's not talking.' I was terrified. I remember the doctors saying that we would know if she will make it in the next twenty-four hours. She had some type of tube in her neck, I believe it took her blood into a machine, cleaned the blood, and it put her blood back into her neck. That's when our Mom suggested that Maddie should take me to the hospital cafeteria so I wouldn't see that." I choked up a bit, tears finally coming out of my eyes. Demi rubbed my back comfortingly.

"I ended up witnessing her having three strokes and a heart attack, and it felt like a nightmare. It didn't feel real."

"If her and my assistant hadn't come into my room, I wouldn't be here today." Demi spoke up as she held my hand.

"When I saw Demi awake for the first time in the hospital I was sitting next to her bed. When she opened her eyes, she looked at me. I grabbed her hand, and I said, 'I'm here and I love you,' just to let her know I was there." (A/N: I know Maddie said this but let's act like it's Charlie.) "I was resenting her for a stupid reason and I regret ever resenting her."

"She looked me dead in the eye and she said, 'Who is that?'" I paused again for a minute. "Which is something you never want to hear your sister say."

"Charlie started sobbing because she thought from then on I was not gonna be able to see." Demi said and started tearing up.

"The first time you got sober, I think it was in response to the fact that your parents told you that you couldn't see your sisters Charlotte and Madison. And then to bring it full circle, you couldn't see your sister in a literal sense." Michael spoke up from behind the camera.

"I know it's not what they literally meant. Um, I know they meant it metaphorically. But it's really ironic, and in a weird way poetic that it ended up happening like that and me not actually seeing both of them." Demi was full on crying now.

"If I'm being completely honest, when I was told that Demi wanting to be able to see both Madison and I and keep a relationship with us was one of the main reasons she went to treatment, I didn't believe it, that a sister relationship like that could stand in the way of Demi and her addictions even if for a moment."

The more I continued explaining everything, the more it brought back memories to the day she overdosed and when she was at the hospital. Her oxygen levels dropping and a tube literally sewn into her neck. How she said she couldn't see anything.

"Charlie! Charlie, you have to breathe!" Demi interrupted my thoughts and that's when I realized I was having a panic attack, Demi was kneeling in front of me, and the cameras were off.

"I-I can't do it, Demi!" I cried out as I wrapped my arms around her neck.

"Hey, hey, calm down. You need to breathe. Follow my breathing, baby girl." Demi comforted. Michael came over and knelt down next to us.

"You did so good, Charlie." Michael spoke up. "We got everything we needed thanks to you." He told me. I looked at him, with my head resting on Demi's shoulder as she held me, and I gave him a small smile.

"I want to go home.. I'm tired.." I whispered as I closed my eyes and some more tears came out of them.

"We can go home, baby." Demi said to me. She stood up off the floor and she ended up having to carry me because I wouldn't let go of her. Demi and Michael said goodbye to each other. She proceeded to carry me outside the building where Max was waiting for us.

"How did it go?" Max asked, his Australian accent noticeable.

"Better than I thought." Demi responded as she put me down next to the car.

I opened the back door and climbed in the backseat. Demi climbed in next to me and she indicated for me to lay my head on her lap, which I gladly accepted. Demi began playing with my hair while telling me that I did great and how proud she was along with different comforting things all the way back to the house.
