Chapter 55 - Calamity Class Expectations

"My name is Luthais Farric. I'm an elf from the kingdom of Aria. I'm also the founder of this school."

"Wow, an elf!" Someone whispered.

"I thought they hated humans though?" Another questioned.

"Ahem," Luthais coughed into his fist silencing the whispers before continuing. "There is a reason why we elves expanded our influence over to this kingdom, and that is because of our recent discoveries, I am sure you are all aware of the term 'respawn monster'?"

Murmurs of agreement fill the air and a few nodding heads are seen.

"Well, after some scholars scrolling through records, they discovered that monsters legendary and above can also respawn." He finishes with a grave tone.

Rushed murmurs are all that is heard and soon rise in volume until they become yells. An arm next to Licht shoots up, it's Lisa.

"Does that include…." She trails off with a dark look in her eyes.

Luthais sighs, "Yes, that also includes…calamity class monsters."

The worried voices of the students become louder and some start to panic. Loud voices carry protests and the quieter ones cry to themselves as they question why it had to be so.

Licht turned around; Lisa had her head down with her fists clenched tight. Matt trembled with a pale face and for once Alice had a frown on her face.

"Now, now. All of you calm down." He begins with a shake of his head, "The reason this school was built was to nurture future heroes and adventurers that will be strong enough, if not stronger, to deal with the threats that will come in the future."

It's quiet.

Like dead quiet. No one said a word; you couldn't even hear breathing.

Luthais looked at the pale faces of the children in front of him, he felt guilty. It wasn't exactly the best feeling putting this huge amount of responsibility on their shoulders at their young age. Though, there were some exceptions like princess Elizabeth, Davie, and….oh?

'A familiar face.' Luthais thought to himself. His eyes focused on Licht as he ingrained the new person into his memory. His dark skin and bright blue eyes; his white hair and his blank stare.

'Odd combination, but who am I to judge. She seems to be a noble too, huh.' He thinks silently and soon his stare is met with Licht's.

Luthais gives a tight smile and turns away. 'And quite a temper too.'

"Class dismissed." Serece's voice calls out, snapping the students out of their stupor just as the bell rang. She had wanted a long calm discussion to get them to ease into things, but the idiot next to her dropped a class 4 spell on the whole arena. It was clear that the discussion could go any further.

The students filed out of the class like brainless undead, they had none of the usual excited chatter they had on other days. Serece sighed, "Look what you caused idiot!!" She yells, slapping the elf upside the head.

Matt watched Licht's nonchalant figure flip through a thick book, "Aren't you scared?"

Licht looks up from his book; he no longer had his eye patch on, displaying his mismatched eyes. "Hmm? Scared of what?"

"The responsibility?" Matt frowns, "They're…the school, I mean, has high hopes for us. They want us to be strong enough to beat a calamity class monster. But, I don't….I mean, you can still see the aftermath those monsters caused, even if it was a hundred years ago!"

"So you're gonna give up?"

Matt's head snaps up; he furrows his brows, "No…at least, I don't think so."

"So, why are we talking about this right now?"

"You…never doubt yourself do you?" Matt questions with a smile.

Licht hums; flipping a page on his book. Suddenly, a continuous dinging sound was heard in the room. Licht turned to Matt, raised his eyebrows, and tilted his head.

Matt had a knowing smile on his face. It was such a cute look, seeing Licht's confused face. It was rare too.

"I'll get that."

Matt walked up to the door and pressed a button that lay right above the doorknob.

"Hello? Is this Matt's room?" A familiar voice questions. It was Alice.

"Yeah. Did you need something?"

"Not really. I was going to invite you and Licht somewhere interesting?"

"Ask away. Licht's right here with me." Matt chuckles. Alice sighs in relief from the other side of the line, "Really? Well, that makes things easier."

"You guys wanna join? There's a party the student council organized for the newcomers this year. You know, to socialize with seniors and all that jazz." She drawls out with a yawn.

"Sure, I'll come with. Licht?" He turned to Licht, only to find him with a dazed look on his face.

"Licht? Are you alright?" Snapping Licht from his daze, Licht turned to Matt with a frown and shook his head. "I'll…be busy. Got something to take care of." He mumbled.

Matt nods hesitantly and dresses up to get ready for the party. At the door, he glances back at Licht. "I'll be back before ten." Without waiting for a reply, he shuts the door and leaves, leaving Licht alone in silence.

A few minutes tick away as Licht stares at the door. Making sure the coast is clear, he sighs before speaking. "Come out."
