Chapter 44 - Monsters at Thirteen

"I'll have to refuse that request," Viscar says after clearing his throat. Elizabeth narrows her eyes, "What?" She asks using her usual intimidating tone, she was royalty for sure.

"Ugh, come on missy." Viscar sighs, shaking his head. "Surely, you haven't forgotten. There is no special treatment on school grounds."

Elizabeth opened her mouth to retort but closes it soon after. She had her palms clenched and her left eye twitched continuously in annoyance like she was recalling something unpleasant.

"Please. I would like you to reconsider my request." She reluctantly blurts out with a bow. Jean, her opponent, raised her hand. She had short blood-red hair and orange eyes. You would think they were siblings; the resemblance was astonishing.

"I am also against a partner change. As a martial artist, I aim is to get stronger by battling even stronger opponents." She chanted smoothly with a straight face. How cheesy...

"Now, go on. We don't have all day you know." Elizabeth gritted and walked alongside Jean to the stage. They both stand a distance from each other. They were too close, considering the vast amount of space around them.

"I can't believe a-" A fist suddenly appeared before her, causing her to jerk her body to her left. Her opponent had already started, did she really have no common courtesy?!

Jean delivers her blows at high speed, Elizabeth had even had difficulty dodging. She couldn't see an opening to land a counter-attack. She leaps backward, slashing her sword vertically and horizontally. A warning not to come any closer.

Now, that she could finally take a breath she could use her skills. She pushes off the ground and dashes towards Jean. With her sword in the air, she gives a grunt before swinging it down at Jean's shoulder joint.

There's a clang, and Jean is holding the sword in her hands. Jean did not have any weapon; as a martial artist, her pride didn't allow her. Still, she wore a pair of black gloves, with metal chunks that shone like diamonds when she opened her palms.

"Very smart of you. But it would be great if you let. My. Sword. Go." She finishes her sentence with a series of grunts choked between. She tugged for a while before, she twists her body; going under the sword and delivering a kick to Jean's abdomen.

Jean lets out a large breath as she clutches her stomach, she smiles and then giggles. "I guess it's my fault for underestimating you. It seems that you are a worthy opponent." She hopped in place before crouching with her arms folded in front of her. Suddenly, she wasn't there anymore.

Her leg swung from behind, at Elizabeth's head. It had connected, but with Elizabeth's forearm at the last second. Elizbeth is launched back from the force; Jean was more experienced in close combat. It would be foolish of her if she tried to compare her combat experience with Jean's.

"Wind Magic: [Wind Cutter]." The air ripples as blades made of wind fly towards Jean. Jean's eyes widened, impressed at the speed of the magic. Even if they were just basic spells, you could tell that she was an expert at it.

She crosses her arms as she protects her vitals and face. Almost every part of her body had been cut. Knowing her limit, Jean raises both arms in surrender; "I give up. I can't go any longer." She states with a wince.

Elizabeth responds with a haughty scoff, even if she had continued, she wasn't stupid enough to be defeated by a mere commoner.

"What monsters! The princess is especially impressive."

"That's the princess for you. Three years and already a monster."

"She's really pretty, too! Too bad I don't stand a chance."

"Next is..." Viscar looked through the students he had left. He suddenly got nervous after seeing Licht's irritated face.

'Do I really have to wait around till my turn? Why don't we have seats?' Licht had been waiting, standing out here for his turn. His feet didn't hurt, but it was irritating nonetheless.

"Licht and Susanne!" Viscar calls out in slight panic. Matt squints his eyes, he watched Viscar's expression carefully. He was recovering at a station filled with healers, but he still wanted to watch the spars. He wanted to see how stronger his classmates were, so he could eventually catch up to them.

Though, Viscar's expression confused him. He had the same expression as someone who encounters a bandit in the forest. Nervous with a hint of fear, he had experienced this himself. He noticed that Viscar was looking at...Licht? What had he done to deserve such a look?

If he remembered correctly, Licht had a faulty status board. So why? Unless...he knows something we don't.
