Chapter 3 - Dead Fish Eyes

Three years later, I am now called that kid with eyes that stare into your soul. My dead fish eyes are more apparent than ever, causing mother to worry over me. I still haven't met my father, but when I ask, she gives a smile and tells me it's a surprise. I have two step siblings, from a political marriage that was unavoidable. She soon died due to an illness though.

My step siblings however, despise me. They ignore me and glare, making their hostility towards me blatant. I don't mind though; the stares don't affect me anymore. Over the past three years, I've gotten a bucket load of skills from reading books. But it ends there, I can't get what I can't see. I've been leveling up by killing birds and rats that but that got old, and I haven't been leveling as fast as before.

At first, my status was a bit messy, but soon I reached a requirement.

[Element Magic (Beginner)]

Magic that carries the four elements; Fire magic, Water magic, Earth magic and Wind magic.

[Divine Magic (Beginner)]

Magic that goes further than elemental magic. The magic that comes from the gods; Lightning magic, Light magic, Magma magic, Ice magic.

[Shadow Magic (Beginner)]

Magic that goes further than elemental magic. The magic that comes from demons; Shadow magic, ???, ???, ???.

[Non-Elemental Magic (Beginner)]

Magic that is not created from elemental magic. Magic that isn't governed by elements.

I've gotten over the fact that the Shadow magic doesn't give enough information. I guess I should meet some qualifications, to get more information.

I roam around the small village that my family owns. Everyone here looks so content and happy, so I should guess that my father is decent person at least, not some douchebag tax collector. Feeling someone's eyes on me, I walk into a dead-end alley. Quickly using a skill, [Teleport], I find myself at the outer part of a forest. The forest that has monsters that can be killed to level up.

A slime appears out of a nearby bush. You would think that slimes will be cute, but the little sh*t I'm seeing here is anything but cute. Looks like a ball of barf.

[Level Up]

Gaining two levels from a single slime, I see the true value of those skills the old man gave me. I go on a slime killing spree, and gained 8 levels before I sat down in exhaustion. Taking the time to distribute my points, I try to increase my strength into a more comfortable figure. I get up and look up at the sky to see that the sun is setting. I soon find myself walking in a daze, wondering who was following me.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Little Licht!! Where were you?! Your big brother was looking everywhere for you!! Don't you want to say goodbye before I leave?! Why are you so mean to meee?!" He's clinging to me again. He always does this, but today has a bit extra since he just finished his 2-year break from the 'Knightly Order' and has to go back.

"Get off me you freak." I demand. He stops crying for a second and that gives me the chance to slip away. As I walk back to my room, he follows closely behind.

"It's not nice to call your big brother a freak. But I'll forgive because you're too cute for me to stay mad at. Yes, you are, yes you are..." He goes on and pinches my cheeks pulling on them softly. Usually, my dead fish eyes will give people the idea that I'm unapproachable and stressed like in Japan. But here, my white hair catches attention everywhere I go, my dark skin makes me look like a dark elf and my cute face. It practically says, 'come pinch my cheeks'.

I have to live with it cause hair dye isn't a thing, which is pretty unbelievable considering the fact that there completely ridiculous hair colors I've seen so far.

"Little Licht, don't go! Father is coming back from his dinner trip and we're having dinner together tonight." Hearing this, I pause and turn to him. I'm seeing my father. Although, he could be lying for all I know.

Narrowing my eyes menacingly, "Are you lying?" He shrugs his shoulders playfully, "Maybe, maybe not. I could tell you if you give your big brother a loving kiss on the cheek." He closes his eyes, obviously expecting a kiss.

But, it's not worth it. I spin back around, "Oh well, I'll just have to wait for dinner then." Tears start to form at his eyes, he looks like a child. Walking back towards him, I gesture for him to come down and I pat his head softly. I glare him, "That's all you get." I get back on track, end up in my room and lock the door. I hear his squealing and his 'he loves me' and 'he's so cute' fade into the distance before I relax.

Dinner time.

I pick at my food and glance towards the red-haired man flirting with my mother. He has short hair, brown eyes and a moderate build. I was expecting him to be somewhat macho man, but I'm still a bit relieved. He looks at me and gives me a hearty laugh.

"Looks like your mother was right. You really look too old for your age." He continues laughing, but I feel a vein burst at his words.

"Looks like I can say the say the same for you, old man." I mutter out, just loud enough for him to hear. Everyone freezes. They didn't expect the abnormally quiet kid to say anything, better yet, they didn't expect him to call out the lord of the house.

A loud laugh erupts from the apex of the table, where father sat.

"The boy got some spunk, huh? I like it!" He keeps laughing. I force smile back at him, but my smile twitches. My dead fish eyes literally glare a hole on the side of his face, but he seems unfazed. Dropping my smile, I place my hands on my cheeks. It actually hurt to smile, I'm not so great with feelings you see.

After dinner, I sit on my bed with a book about the history of the kingdom in my hands. Finishing the book in record time, I lie on my bed about to sleep when a knock breaks the welcomed silence.

"Licht? Won't you let your mother in?" Mother peaks her head into my room with a disturbed expression on her face. Making a sound of affirmation, she smiles a bit before coming to sit next to my lying body. She hums as she strokes my hair,

"Licht, you don't need to mind what your father said. He's just letting loose after a lot of work, okay?"

"Mhm."

"Licht?"

"Yes mother?"

"There's something you need to know." She stops stroking my hair and looks me in the eyes. "I'm not your real mother."

I don't give a reaction. It's pretty obvious. I don't take over my mother, obviously, so I thought I took my features from my father. But that wasn't the case either.

"I know you probably know already, since you're so smart. Though, your mother who gave birth to you is...." Her voice trails off, as I see her eyes glistening from her unshed tears.

"Your mother is dead."
