A lonely breeze swept past old ruins of civilization, gently blowing away dust and revealing damaged signs of a once prosperous past. Thorny vines crawled on countless columns and wreckages.
Drip...
The first drop of clear rain fell onto the ground, indicating the end of half a year of highly acidic rain and countless thunderstorms.
Three mushrooms on a withered log raised their caps to the sky.
" Oi... It's raining, " whispered a chubby purple-capped mushroom to the wrinkly mushroom next to it.
" Yeah, I know.. I bet it's acid again. Good thing my cap is tougher than metal, " said the wrinkly mushroom as it allowed the rain to fall on its grey cap.
The golden-capped mushroom next to them leapt from the log and harshly landed on the ground with a thud. It grimaced, "Ouch! Damn! My landing skills are getting rusty! Also, that isn't acid rain, it's good rain! Hell is over! "
The wrinkly mushroom's tiny eyes sparkled. Fresh rain! It hadn't experienced fresh rain for 6 straight months! It separated itself from the log and landed face-first on the ground, "Owwww! I have a huge cap! Why did my face get hit first?!"
The chubby mushroom stayed on the log and enjoyed the fresh rain. It had a look of relief and joy as it swayed its cap to the rain.
" Chubbles, Crumples! " the golden-capped mushroom called out the chubby and wrinkly mushroom respectively, "Store the freakin' water and enjoy it later! We have to move now! "
Chubbles jumped down and landed on top of Crumples, causing Crumples to kiss land once again. Chubbles silently chuckled inwardly and looked at the golden-capped mushroom, " A'ight Agua, where we goin? "
Agua looked left and right and randomly decided to go left, "We'll go left..."
Chubbles was silent for a moment before he asked, " Uhh... Why? "
"Because yes..." Agua replied as she began hopping away.
Chubbles went speechless but he still followed after Agua. Crumples got up and hurriedly chased after the two mushrooms.
...
Agua sang the only song she knew as they journeyed to find a new log to rest upon and enjoy their stockpiled water.
"Stomp, stomp, goes the human
Hop, hop, goes the mushroom
They both live together
Under the horrible weather
Honk, honk, goes a car
Pop, pop goes a bubble
The humans are all gone
All that's left is rubble. "
Chubbles whistled to the tune and Crumples swayed to the rhythm. It was also the only song they knew since childhood. They seemed to enjoy listening to the story of the destruction of mankind. They knew that humans were once the superior life forms on Earth. A strange anomaly occurred thousands of years ago which caused the climate to change permanently. Because of the inhospitable climate, the humans weren't able to adapt quickly and were completely wiped out. All that was left were the plants and animals who forcefully adapted and mutated for the sake of survival.
" Hey, " Agua paused as she wondered, " Ever imagine meeting a living and breathing human? "
Crumples tilted her head, " Why? I bet they could crush us with their caps."
Chubbles smacked Crumples cap and said, " Humans don't have caps! They have heads full of hair like those angry monkeys... Why are you thinking about weak dead stuff again, Agua? We survived so we're stronger than them. Besides, it's their fault the world turned out like this. "
Agua contemplated and sighed. She knew that meeting a human was impossible. She could only watch their creations wither slowly as time goes by.
While Agua was imagining about different scenarios, she bumped into a log. She fell backwards but immediately bounced back up. She gasped in awe as the sight of a perfect log entered her shiny round eyes.
" Oh wow! a perfect log to sleep on! This can't possibly be compared to that lousy old log from before! " Chubbles said in excitement as he immediately hopped onto the log and comfortably attached himself to it, " And it suits my taste too!"
" Haha! Let's monopolize this log and hog its perfection! " Crumples laughed as she joined Chubbles, " Hey Agua, what're you waiting for? "
Agua happily joined the duo and enjoyed their stockpiled water. These wonderful moments would not last long so she would rather remember each and every second of it instead of thinking about those humans.
