Chapter 3 - Life In A New World

-Rustle, Rustle-

"Grunt..." [???]

"Griiick… Urk…" [???]

Three small creatures surround Dmitriy, taking turns prodding the stiff, bare body. By the second prod, Dmitriy groggily awoke, but by the third prod, his mind had surged into overdrive, shooting his arm out reflexively at the retreating entity. A solid crack resounds under the forest canopy.

"Urgk?!" [???]

His eyes open wildly. For the second time, Dmitriy sets his eyes upon a creature from another world.

"Green?" [Dmitriy]

The thought leaks out and Dmitriy's eyes glint, shifting between the small green creatures surrounding him, although small is a little misleading. The creatures weren't very small as they were hunched. Heavily arched, green, bony bodies wielding short, pointed branches and wearing loincloths. Caution is soon replaced by bewilderment.

"What are these things?" [Dmitriy]

Incredibly, Dmitriy didn't know what these greedy creatures were. He never was one to read fantasy novels or Japanese manga even though he was fluent in 10 common languages ranging from Russian to English to Korean; however, if he had read anything in this genre, he would have known that these creatures were goblins.

Clearing his mind, Dmitriy prepared for combat. After analyzing the opponents, he concluded that the weakest among them was the goblin to his right-hand side. The weapon was relatively dulled and the wielder clearly didn't know how to use it. The goblin directly in front of Dmitriy had a weapon resembling a short spear. Although the weapon was crude, it did have a sharpened bone tip attached making it the most formidable weapon of the bunch. This is probably the weapon that hurt enough to awaken Dmitriy. The third weapon was simply snapped in half but the crafty creature had backed off a few steps due to its small dilemma. Dmitriy rotated his body towards the final goblin on his left and leaned forward.

-Crrrack-

"Urk!" [???]

Blood splattered from behind. Dmitriy's bait had worked well and his practiced back kick had caved in the skull of the weakest goblin. Following this short exchange, Dmitriy seized the middle goblin's spear and axe kicked him to the ground.

'Their short figure makes these kicks almost too easy.' [Dmitriy]

The struck goblin crumpled under the kick's force and splayed out dead on the ground. With two down, the last unarmed goblin remained. Fear radiated from his entire body; however, something was amiss. Looking at the goblin's eyes, Dmitriy saw glee instead of fear.

-Fwoooosh-

"Gwuah?!" [Goblin 3]

A club flew over where Dmitriy's head used to be. After seeing the brutal glee in the goblin's eyes, Dmitriy instinctively dropped to the ground and rolled. Years of battle experience trained Dmitriy to distinguish between a defeated and a victorious look. The safest, and easiest, course of action usually was to drop to the ground, which is what he did. The goblin's face contorted further. This time his eyes reflected the fear written across his body. A short spear was thrust through his throat.

'Three down, one to go.' [Dmitriy]

Dmitriy spun around and shifted into a guarded stance, ready to retreat from any imminent threats coming from the unknown attacker. Wielding a crude club was a fourth goblin; however, this goblin had slightly different features from the three that lay dead and strewn across the forest floor. Unlike other goblins, this creature was taller and more defined with beady, cruel eyes that bored into Dmitriy with disdain. This creature was a hobgoblin.

"Urrrrrrrr…" [Hobgoblin]

A low, guttural growl was issued from the new creature sending shivers down Dmitriy's spine. Dmitriy yanked the spear out of his most recent victim's throat. Even without a cursory inspection, it was obvious that the spearhead had broken off and remained lodged inside the goblin's sinewy flesh.

"Fucking hell. First a teleportation phenomenon and now barehanded brawling with a mythical creature." [Dmitriy]

Of course, goblins were a long shot from mythical creatures, but Dmitriy's ignorance was not about to correct his lapse in judgement. With this, Dmitriy resigned himself to sizing up his new opponent carefully.

The hobgoblin stood around 2 meters tall, making it taller than Dmitriy who only stood at 170 centimeters last he measured. Bulging muscles were visibly rippling underneath the hobgoblin's skin and two canine teeth protrude menacingly from his mouth. Contempt seethed forth from the hobgoblin's entire being and the aura of self confidence was almost stifling to witness. Through this, Dmitriy remained calm. Weaponless and weaker, his plans of attack were vastly narrowed. Along with these disadvantages, the hobgoblin appeared relatively smarter than the goblins as his eyes shifted from Dmitriy to the broken spear and a disgusting smile plastered itself onto his face. Then the first fist was swung. The hobgoblin bellowed and killing intent spewed from his body like a geyser. His fists swung wildly in large arcs, strong enough to break bark off of the nearby trees. Dmitriy stood fast. As soon as the oncoming barrage of meat was close enough to strike Dmitriy, he thrust the spear shaft towards the hobgoblin's eyes while kicking off the tree he once rested on. Soft flesh caved under the combined force of Dmitriy's horizontal kick and thrust. Blood dribbled from the socket that now housed a thin wooden shaft. Stunned, the hobgoblin simply stood.

"Hurgh?" [Hobgoblin]

A questioning sound came from the dazed hobgoblin. The creature grabbed the rod and caringly pulled it out.

"Urk… Grrrrraaaaaaa!!!" [Hobgoblin]

The pain came in a torrent. Brackish blood spewed from the empty eye socket and the hobgoblin swung his fist to the left as hard as he could.

-Crack-

"Graaaaaaaaaah!!!!!" [Hobgoblin]

The swing hit a nearby tree and shattered the hobgoblins wrist in the process. Another bout of pain brought the hobgoblin to his knees. The scream echoed underneath the forest canopy and brought any remaining birds and animals into a frenzied flight, desperately trying to escape from the unknown roar.

A swift kick swung around from beside the hobgoblin and struck him in the nose. A dull crunch of more broken bones sounded out and the hobgoblin was thrown onto his back. More blood gushed out from the dazed hobgoblin's nose, dirtying his face further. Dmitriy stepped forward and in a single, smooth motion, he stomped onto the hobgoblin's throat, crushing the windpipe.

The fight had ended.

"Four enemies neutralized. God what am I saying. It's like I'm still an assassin. I guess it is comforting to know that I can protect myself even after going through… I still can't wrap my head around it." [Dmitriy]

With nightfall now approaching, Dmitriy headed for a nearby tree. He considered stealing a loincloth off of the fallen goblins to use as some form of clothing but reconsidered his decision after realizing how awful the stench surrounding the goblins was. For the meantime, Dmitriy settled on sleeping above the goblin corpses. The decision was made with the idea that the foul stench of a goblin would scare off any light hearted predators searching for an easy meal and with that, Dmitriy's second day in the new world concluded. Bloodied, bruised but mentally stable, Dmitriy once again fell asleep within the tree branches.

"Is this child even normal?" [???]

"For another worlder, he is quite impressive. I'm surprised that Erebus of the Orthodox has puzzled out how to bend space time to other worlds though." [???]

"Now that you mention it, it does come as a surprise. Should we convene the council of the Old Ones?" [???]

"No, let us wait, but one thing I will do is help our little child find his way." [???]

"As Dvalim commands." [???]
