Chapter 1 - The Storm

The off grid lifestyle is not for everyone, add the desert and problems begin to surface like ants in the rain. There is all sorts of things that want you, and your attention. The days, nights and the space in between teach you many lessons. Being alone and problems make you the master of "let's hope it works."

The storm that blew in on this night was wildly crazy. Picking up the green house and taking it some thirty feet from where it was. Anything that wasn't nailed down was literally taking flight. You could smell the rain in the distance, you could see the lightening and hear the thunder as it crackled in the sky. It was a wild. My husband was still at work. I wasn't sure when he was gonna try to head back this way. I could hear my livestock guardian dog barking. My hound to was making a crazy amount of noise. I grabbed my 9mm and headed out the door throwing my jacket on. The wind made getting the direction of the barking rough. The thunder didn't help.

I crested the top of "look out hill" and seen my hound and livestock dog packed and barking standing between whatever it was and my small herd of horses. Thankfully they were stalled in the canyon to the west of the house, warm and safe from this wild weather.

I came out infront of their doors. Facing what the two dogs were facing. I could hear my hound saying "about time." and the livestock dog going "you should have brought the rifle."

Looking past them I seen the biggest reddish wolf I had ever seen. When the history channel mentioned dire wolves pretty sure their ideas were wrong. Damn thing was HUGE! Pretty sure its teeth were bigger then a raptor claw.

Pulling the 9 and racking it back with the same motion, gulped and stepped forward. Placing myself between my two dogs. "Get out of here!" I fired two shots just infront. Enough to send the dirt up into its face.

The giant red wolf shook its head and snarled again. "Great, you just pissed it off." I heard the livestock dog say. (I am an animal communicator and psychic, by trade. Hearing animals is the norm for me. I grew up that way. I was that kid who could take the wild of the wild in any animal and be friends with it.)

"I am gonna talk to it," I said above the storm. Walking a step closer I asked "are you hungry?"

"Well duh" sneered my hound. I glanced at him with a look of shut up. Looking back at the wolf "can you hear me?" my line of sight still looking down the nose of the pistol.

"Yes" I heard it say. Not gonna lie that sent a shiver down my spine.

"I suggest you find a different meal." I spoke back and took one more step forward.
