Chapter 33 - IV: Three Years

The past three years had been transformative for Aedan. He was no longer the inexperienced youth who had first arrived at the Nexus City; now, he was a disciplined warrior with honed skills, forged through relentless training and hard-earned wisdom. The Earthen Hall had pushed him to his limits, forcing him to confront his weaknesses and transform them into strengths. His once-wild Enigma, now refined and responsive, was a far cry from the untamed force it had been, he not only could maintain his aura indefinitely as his hair and eyes would change to reflect the current emotion he was using to power his aura.

Aedan had grown into a figure of quiet confidence, his white hair and eyes, a rarity even among the diverse inhabitants of the galaxy, had become a symbol of his unique abilities.

His two years at the Academy were filled with challenges that tested his mind, body, and spirit. The curriculum was grueling, covering everything from advanced combat techniques to complex Enigma theory. His instructors were relentless, expecting nothing short of perfection. And then came his year as a squire under Julian, a Hall Enforcer known for his no-nonsense approach to the field. Julian had shaped Aedan into a capable operative, guiding him through missions that required quick thinking, adaptability, and unflinching resolve.

Now, Aedan was no longer just a student. He was a raised to a squire then Elite-Squire, entrusted with critical missions that took him to places outside of . For the past six months, he had been venturing off-world with Julian, carrying out assignments that tested every skill he had learned. And now, they were in the middle of one of their most challenging missions yet.

The memory of the briefing was still fresh in Aedan's mind, even as he moved through the corridors of the opulent starship. It had taken place just two days earlier, in the sparse, dimly lit briefing room aboard their transport ship. Julian had stood at the head of the room, his expression as stern as ever, while Aedan and the two other squires had listened intently.

"This mission is delicate," Julian had begun, his voice low and measured. "We're dealing with Veridas, a planet ruled by greed and corruption. The ruler, Lord Valos, runs a thriving market in human trafficking. Our objective is to gather intelligence on one of his key operatives, a man who goes by the name of Thane. He's the one pulling the strings behind the scenes, making sure the trade runs smoothly. We need to know who his contacts are, where the slaves are being sent, and most importantly, how we can dismantle his operation."

Julian had paused, letting the weight of his words settle over them. "Aedan, you'll be infiltrating the party as one of the guests. Your cover is solid, but you'll need to be on your guard. These people are dangerous, and they don't take kindly to spies. Your primary objective is to locate Thane and plant a surveillance device in a secure area, preferably the command center or Lord Valos's private quarters. Stay sharp, stay focused, and above all, do not blow your cover."

Aedan had nodded, his mind already racing with the possibilities. He understood the stakes, this mission was about more than just gathering information; it was about striking a blow against a powerful, corrupt system. And he was ready to play his part.

Aedan stepped off the shuttle onto the gleaming deck of Lord Valos's starship, his senses immediately assaulted by the overwhelming opulence that surrounded him. The vessel was more than just a means of transportation; it was a floating palace, a symbol of the ruler's vast wealth and power. The grand entrance hall was adorned with intricate tapestries from distant worlds, their rich colors vibrant even in the dim light. The air was thick with the scent of rare perfumes and the heady aroma of exotic foods, creating an atmosphere that was equal parts intoxicating and suffocating.

As Aedan walked through the hall, his white suit drawing appreciative glances from those around him, he couldn't help but marvel at the sheer decadence on display. The guests, a dizzying array of alien races, were draped in luxurious fabrics, their bodies adorned with jewels that caught the light with every movement. There were tall, lithe beings with skin that shimmered like polished metal, squat, bulbous creatures whose eyes darted nervously as they gorged themselves on delicacies, and everything in between.

The contrast between Aedan's stark, angelic appearance and the opulent surroundings only added to the mystique he projected. His white hair and eyes, coupled with his impeccable suit, made him appear almost otherworldly, a fitting disguise for someone who needed to keep their true identity hidden. Yet beneath his calm exterior, his mind was racing, every sense alert to the potential dangers lurking within the ship's gilded walls.

Aedan moved through the crowd with practiced ease, offering polite nods and brief smiles to those who tried to engage him in conversation. As Aedan moved through the glittering halls, his Enigma hummed softly within him, a subtle pulse of energy that he could call upon at will. Over the years, he had learned to wield his empathetic abilities with precision, using them to influence the emotions of those around him without their knowledge. It was a delicate art, one that required a careful balance of control and restraint.

As he made his way toward the grand ballroom, Aedan subtly extended his Enigma, feeling the emotional currents that flowed through the room. He could sense the greed and arrogance of the guests, their desires laid bare beneath the veneer of civility. It was a seething mass of ambition and treachery, the perfect breeding ground for the kind of information he needed to gather.

He noticed a guest with a vibrant yellow crystal, radiating Joy, as she laughed heartily at a companion's joke. Nearby, another guest's crystal glowed a deep red, Anger, bubbling just beneath the surface as they argued with a server. Aedan maintained a careful balance, projecting an aura of calm that kept his own emotions in check while allowing him to subtly nudge the feelings of those around him.

He paused near a group of well-dressed guests who were deep in conversation, their words laced with thinly veiled threats and promises of wealth. Aedan allowed his red aura to brush against them, just enough to heighten their existing tensions. One of them, a tall alien with eyes like molten gold, began to grow visibly agitated, his voice rising as he accused his companion of undercutting their deal. Aedan slipped away unnoticed as the argument escalated, a small smile tugging at the corner of his lips.

The grand ballroom was a spectacle of luxury, its vaulted ceiling lined with crystalline chandeliers that cast a soft, shimmering light over the guests below. Aedan entered the room, his gaze sweeping over the scene as he calculated his next move. He was searching for Thane, the man at the heart of Lord Valos's operation, but locating him in this crowd would be no easy task.

Aedan moved toward the edges of the room, where the less conspicuous guests gathered in small groups, away from the central spectacle. He listened carefully to the conversations around him, his heightened senses picking up on snippets of valuable information. Lords and dignitaries whispered about new trade routes, secret alliances, and the exchange of contraband. Each piece of information was cataloged in Aedan's mind, a puzzle he was slowly assembling.

As he navigated the room, Aedan noticed a group of security personnel standing near the entrance to a restricted area. Their eyes scanned the crowd with a practiced vigilance, their expressions hard and unyielding. Aedan's heart rate quickened as he realized he would need to bypass them to reach the more sensitive areas of the ship.

He approached the bar, ordering a drink as he considered his options. Aedan's fingers drummed lightly on the counter as he observed the security detail. His Enigma thrummed in the back of his mind, waiting for his command. He had to be careful; a wrong move could expose him, but doing nothing wasn't an option.

His moment came when one of the guards turned his head to speak with a guest, a minor lapse in attention, but enough for Aedan. He let his Enigma reach out, subtly influencing the emotions of the other guard. The man's posture relaxed slightly as a wave of calm washed over him, dulling his alertness. Aedan slipped past them, his movements smooth and unhurried, as though he belonged there.

He found himself in a quieter corridor, the opulence of the party giving way to the utilitarian design of the ship's inner workings. Here, away from prying eyes, he could move more freely. Aedan quickly located a small maintenance hatch leading to a network of service tunnels that crisscrossed the ship. It was a tight fit, but it allowed him to move undetected to his target: the command center.

The command center was a small, heavily secured room near the bridge, filled with screens and consoles that monitored the ship's systems. Aedan worked quickly, using the skills he had honed under Julian's tutelage to bypass the electronic locks. The surveillance device he carried was no larger than a coin, yet it could transmit data over vast distances, feeding crucial information back to Julian and the Earthen Hall.

Aedan planted the device in a discreet location behind one of the consoles, its activation signal barely a whisper in the vast electronic noise of the ship. Satisfied, he retraced his steps, carefully avoiding detection as he made his way back to the main areas of the ship.

Aedan was just beginning to feel a sense of accomplishment when his earpiece crackled to life with Julian's voice, urgent and clipped. "Aedan, we have a problem. There's been a change in plans. Valos has just increased security, we think he might be onto us. Get out of there, now."

Aedan's blood ran cold. He could already feel the shift in the atmosphere, the heightened tension among the guests, and the security personnel on higher alert. He took a steadying breath, forcing himself to remain calm. His mission wasn't over yet; he still needed to extract himself without blowing his cover.

As he made his way back toward the grand ballroom, he sensed someone watching him. He glanced sideways and locked eyes with a tall, imposing figure standing near the edge of the room. The man's piercing gaze bore into Aedan, as if trying to see through his disguise. There was something familiar about him, something that set off alarm bells in Aedan's mind.

The figure took a step forward, his presence radiating a silent menace. Aedan felt a flicker of recognition, this was no ordinary guest. He had seen this man's face before, in one of Julian's briefings. The man was a bounty hunter, notorious for his ability to sniff out spies and traitors. Aedan's heart pounded in his chest as he realized he was now a target.

The bounty hunter's eyes narrowed, and Aedan knew he had to act fast. He subtly activated his Enigma, using it to project a wave of calm over the hunter, attempting to dull his suspicions. But the man's will was strong, his mind a fortress that Aedan struggled to penetrate.

Thinking quickly, Aedan reached out with his aura of Joy, amplifying the festive atmosphere around them, making the hunter feel a sense of euphoria, hoping to distract him just long enough. The man's eyes flickered with confusion for a brief moment, and Aedan seized the opportunity to slip away into the crowd.

He headed toward a nearby exit, his movements swift and purposeful. But just as he thought he was in the clear, a loud voice cut through the noise of the party. "You there! Stop!"

Aedan's pulse quickened as he turned to see one of the security guards advancing toward him, the bounty hunter not far behind. His mind raced as he calculated his options. There was no way he could fight his way out of this without drawing more attention.

Then, a flash of memory, Julian's voice during their training. "If you're ever cornered, don't panic. Use the environment, use their expectations against them."

Aedan took a deep breath and made his decision. He turned to face the approaching guard, a disarming smile on his face as he held up his hands in a gesture of surrender. "I'm sorry, did I do something wrong?" he asked, his tone light and innocent.

The guard hesitated, momentarily thrown off by Aedan's calm demeanor and angelic appearance. The bounty hunter, however, wasn't so easily fooled. He narrowed his eyes, stepping closer, his hand inching toward the weapon at his side.

Just as the tension reached its peak, a commotion erupted at the far end of the room. A group of guests had started arguing loudly, drawing the attention of the guards. Aedan didn't waste a second, he slipped into the confusion, blending into the crowd as he made his way toward the exit.

He reached the shuttle bay just as the alarm began to blare, signaling the heightened security measures. Aedan's heart was racing as he boarded the small craft that would take him back to the rendezvous point. As the shuttle lifted off, he allowed himself a moment of relief, his mission accomplished, albeit with more complications than he had anticipated.

As the shuttle sped away from the opulent starship, Aedan's pulse began to slow, the adrenaline from the mission gradually fading. But just as he started to relax, a sharp warning beep pierced the quiet hum of the craft's engines. His eyes darted to the control panel, an enemy vessel had locked onto them, and it was closing in fast.

"Of course," Aedan muttered under his breath, his fingers flying over the controls. The bounty hunter must have anticipated his escape route and relayed it to a nearby patrol ship. There was no time to contact Julian or request backup. He was on his own.

The enemy vessel fired a warning shot that blazed past the shuttle's hull, sending a shudder through the craft. Aedan's grip tightened on the controls, his mind racing as he assessed his options. His shuttle was fast but lightly armed, designed more for stealth than combat. The enemy ship, on the other hand, was a small frigate with a full arsenal.

Aedan had to make a choice, try to outrun the frigate and risk being shot down, or fight back and potentially reveal his location to even more enemies. His thoughts flicked back to Julian's teachings: "When cornered, never play by their rules. Use the unexpected to your advantage."

With a sudden, reckless decision, Aedan veered the shuttle toward a nearby asteroid field. The frigate followed, its weapons firing steadily. Aedan dodged and weaved through the jagged rocks, using the asteroids as cover while he plotted his next move. He couldn't outgun the frigate, but he could use the terrain to his advantage.

As he dipped between two massive asteroids, he caught sight of a particularly large one that seemed unstable, its surface riddled with deep cracks. A plan began to form in his mind, if he could time it just right…

Aedan pushed the shuttle to its limits, with his eyes burning gold, skimming close to the surface of the fractured asteroid. The frigate followed, closing in for the kill. Just as the enemy vessel lined up its shot, Aedan fired his shuttle's meager blasters at the asteroid's weakened structure.

The asteroid shattered in a violent explosion, sending massive chunks of rock hurtling through space. Aedan pulled up sharply, narrowly avoiding the debris as the frigate was caught in the blast. The enemy ship veered off course, its shields barely holding as it was pummeled by the asteroid's remains.

Aedan didn't wait to see the outcome. He accelerated out of the asteroid field, heading straight for the designated rendezvous point. His heart pounded in his chest as the danger receded, replaced by a rush of triumph. He had survived, and more importantly, he had completed his mission.

A few days later, Aedan stood in the great hall of the Earthen Hall's fortress on the neutral planet in the Alpha Centauri system. The hall was vast, its walls lined with banners representing the various factions and guilds that made up the Hall's formidable network. The air was filled with a solemn sense of occasion, the kind that only came with ceremonies steeped in tradition and honor.

Aedan's thoughts drifted to the past three years, the grueling training, the endless drills, the missions that tested his abilities and resolve. He remembered his first days under Julian's mentorship, the uncertainty and the weight of responsibility that had pressed down on him. Now, standing here on the brink of being knighted, it all felt like a distant memory, yet one that had shaped him into who he was now.

The room was filled with knights, squires, and dignitaries, all gathered to witness the elevation of a new member into their ranks. Julian stood at the front, his imposing figure clad in the ceremonial armor of the Earthen Hall. His stern expression softened ever so slightly as he met Aedan's gaze, a silent acknowledgment of the young man's journey.

"Step forward, Aedan Hart," Julian's voice echoed through the hall.

Aedan did as instructed, his heart steady as he walked the length of the room to stand before Julian and the assembled knights. The weight of the moment settled on his shoulders, but it was a weight he was ready to bear.

Julian held up a ceremonial sword, its blade glinting in the torchlight. "You have proven yourself worthy through courage, skill, and loyalty. You have faced the trials set before you with unwavering determination, and today, you stand ready to take your place among us."

He lowered the sword, the flat of the blade resting lightly on Aedan's right shoulder, then his left. "By the authority of the Earthen Hall and the will of the Ninth Heaven Bank, I name you Sir Aedan Hart, Knight of the Earthen Hall. Rise, and serve with honor."

Aedan rose, the weight of the sword's touch replaced by a sense of pride and purpose. The hall erupted in applause, but it was the nod of approval from Julian that meant the most to him. He had done it, he had achieved what once seemed an impossible dream.

After the ceremony, Aedan found himself surrounded by well-wishers, many of whom he recognized from his time in the academy. The sisters who had outperformed him in the recruitment tests offered their congratulations, their expressions respectful if not entirely warm. Aedan returned their gestures, his mind already racing ahead to what lay beyond this moment.

Julian approached him, his usual stern expression softened by a hint of pride. "You've earned this, Aedan. You've grown a lot since you first came to us. Now that you're a knight, you'll have more responsibilities, but I have no doubt you'll handle them well."

Aedan smiled, grateful for the mentor who had guided him through the past years. "Thank you, Julian. I couldn't have done it without your guidance."

Julian nodded, then placed a hand on Aedan's shoulder. "Take a few weeks to rest. You've earned it. But after that, we have work to do. There's a lot more out there than you've seen so far, and I expect you to be ready for it."

Aedan inclined his head in agreement. "I'll be ready."

As the gathering continued, Aedan felt a sense of calm settle over him. The journey that had begun with uncertainty and fear had brought him to this moment, a moment of triumph, yes, but also a moment of transition. He him find out what happened to Esethia.

But as he looked around at the faces of those who had become his comrades, Aedan knew he was not alone.

For now, though, he would take Julian's advice and enjoy the well-earned respite. Mainly because he had some personal matters to attend to.
