Chapter 7 - Chapter 7

Advancing to the last roundabout, she noticed how her hands were shaking, something in her mind remembered her that she was so unprotected, but it was too late. In the chalets to her left the grass had grown in excess, hiding the old decorations that could be seen from the road.

Suddenly, through the gate something tried to attack her making her jump terrified, she could not see exactly what it was since the thick grass still hid the views, but it looked like a person, the grunts were human, although somewhat deformed.

Without thinking twice, or waiting to discover her attacker, she ran towards the entrance to Oviedo. Leaving behind the abandoned gas station, the gloomy trees and all the weeds that seemed to have taken control of the roads, she could finally see the entrance sign to the city.

If Eden thought that everything she experienced in the previous city had been horrible, she had no idea. As a welcome to the city, hanging from the window on the second floor of the nearest buildings, could be seen a very decomposed corpse. The skin was detached from its body, revealing the skeleton in large areas. The young woman's stomach churned leaving her on the verge of vomiting.

Looking at the streets was not much better, wrecked cars, more corpses and dirt littered the streets. Swallowing with great difficulty, she rounded another roundabout, as she advanced she could glimpse what looked like a group of people crouched in the supermarket parking lot, paying attention to each one, she continued forward with an agile step.

Turning a corner so as not to get too close to the group, she faced a man, who threw himself at her automatically. The cry he professed was short but very loud. They were fighting on the ground, arms and legs whipping each other, she didn't even want to look at the man, she just felt something dripping on her face as she tried to push him away. At the last moment and in desperation the young woman grabbed a piece of tile and smashed it on the head of her attacker, taking it off her. Again she got up running, Eden did not know if those infected by that virus could run but she would not stop to check it, her breathing was too agitated, her chest burned, her feet burned, and her knees seemed about to break. For the first time in a long time, Eden cursed her lack of stamina.

Tripping over another broken tile, she fell to the ground head-on, scraping her hands and knees through her clothing. Barely able to breathe, she tried to roll badly under a car keeping her backpack close. Trying to reduce her gasps and barely calm her breathing, she watched as the group following her began to walk around the car. She could see the bottom of the grimy pants of some, and even the feet of others, looking closely she could see that those without shoes had open wounds, with shades incompatible with healthy skin, she could even swear that they were missing more than one toenail .

Covering her mouth she breathed through her nose, hearing the heart in her ears, she felt the pain in her ribs increase, her calves felt as if something was tearing them and to top it off her mind was breaking at times. The wounds that those people presented would be incredibly painful for any human being, trying to rationalize the situation, it only occurred to her that for some reason that disease also affected the sensitivity of the infected.

She knew that if they detected her under there she was lost, but her body ached so badly that she couldn't even move, her mind kept repeating the same prayer over and over as she saw more infected bordering her.

She spent a long time under the car until she stopped seeing or hearing anything. Being "alone" again made her feel as if a weight had been lifted from her, with all the care that she was capable of in such a small space she took the knife out of her backpack, she hoped she would not have to use it against anyone, but if she I had to defend at least she would have a weapon, in addition, although the infection made them aggressive and possibly insensitive to pain, it did not indicate that they did not feel fear of the possibility of being stabbed, or at least that was what the young woman hoped there, pressed between the metal and asphalt.

Watching her way out, she was crawling out of her hiding place, the sky was darkening and that was dangerous, which made it difficult for her to advance, she had to find a refuge as soon as possible. A few meters from her position she could see a barricade made of cars and different public goods such as signs, garbage cans and others, This indicated that at some point the citizens tried to defend themselves, but if the disease had been as fast as his mother said, they had only made their situation worse.

She had to keep going, she couldn't just stand there watching the scenery. Fixing her sweatshirt she approached the barricade and began to climb, being careful with the broken glass, she made sure that the knife in her hand did not fall or hurt her, she wished she could keep the knife in her backpack like she had before, but fear and her need to feel safe were greater.

Holding on to a traffic sign, she passed to the other side. The barricade was not exaggeratedly high but it was just enough to make her try to avoid falling. Eden stepped on the window frame and began her descent to the other side, thanks to gravity descending was not as tiring as climbing but it was not easier for that matter. Feeling each step with her feet and hands she reached the middle of the descent, only then did she stop to look behind her to check that there was no one around.

Without warning a hand grabbed her ankle, startling her and causing her to lose her footing for a second. Choking on a scream, she began to shake her leg as hard as possible without letting go, getting the hand to let her go. Feeling free, she accelerated her descent but again the arm grabbed her by the sweatshirt pulling her inside, this time, among all the metal she could see a woman completely nailed between signs and parts of cars, she grunted while pulling her harder and harder , that woman didn't even look human. Victim of panic, the young woman begun stabbing the arm, opening lethal wounds. Slash after slash the hand ended up releasing her and Eden fell to the ground, being knocked out on the spot
