Chapter 7 - ADJUSTING

As an Omega, l used to live on the outskates of the pack. That way should there be an attack on the pack, we were the first to suffer the casualties of the war. And when anything happens to us, the pack would be alerted, saving the other far more 'important' lives of those who resided at the heart of the pack.

We were, still are lambs to be slaughtered to protect the lives of others. But thankfully the patrol guards would usually alert the pack if anything of the sort were to transpire. Our death would result in the 'handicapped' civilians dying of hunger or chores

The thought made me laugh. But now here l was, in the pack house where the Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta families live. Which l thought was a stupid idea, why would anyone in their right mind group all the important families, who were needed for the survival of the pack on the same place.

And now here l was, living with them. Although l was still their help,l couldn't help but picture myself living here with them. Having dinners in the long mahogany dinner table on the left side of the Alpha, my mate.

The first day was a bit challenging because l didnt know how to navigate the house. Nor did l know what my duties were or how to go about learning them. The head maid, Mrs Dlamini found me wondering the billion hallways trying to find my respective post but she didn't take too lightly my 'slacking off' and wouldn't hesitate to get me fired by the Alpha.

She probably thought he would be on her side not realising that he was my mate and was forever bound to me, until we both took our last breath.

"what are you doing wondering round?" she screamed in my face, her minty breath causing my eyes to water

" No one briefed me on what my duties are. And l couldn't find anyone to help me" l answered although talking to her was the last thing on my mind

"So you thought you would just stand around and not do your work" she asked, her voice rising with each syllable spoke.

"because me walking around trying to find anyone who would direct me to your office is standing around" l asked sarcastically already fed up with the conversation

"I will not tolerate that tone young lady. Just because the Alpha pardoned you, doesn't mean l have to do the same. Which is confusing because just the other day he was ready to throw you off the lands" she said the last part in a whisper, indicating that she speaking to herself. But l had heard her and l couldn't help but worry. I was in no way ready for the pack to find out that l was their Alpha's mate.

They wouldn't be very welcoming but that is the least of my problems. I was used to their indifference. What worried me was the fact that we would be expected to mate, have a Luna ceremony and the all-too-outdated-waste-of-time Luna run. And that would mean exposing my best kept secret.

"my apologies Mrs Dlamini. A didn't mean any disrespect." l said lowering my head in respect. This caused my wolf to cry out in pain. Her pride didn't allow for bowing down to others. Because she knew her place and it definetly wasn't at the bottom

" very well. You are to clean the Alpha' a chambers. And prepare all his meals. But because of your tardiness, you will start with lunch today. Tomorrow no mistakes, understood" she commanded before turning around to walk off

"Wait, l don't know the way to his room" l said

"up the stairs, on the third floor. Knock on the first door you see. The whole floor belongs to him" and with that she was gone. I carefully followed her instructions and l found myself standing outside a large set of double doors that were covered with blinds

Knocking, l braced myself for the awkward situation l was bound to face

"come in" a voice called out. I opened the door only to realise that l had left the cleaning cart in the basement, but before l could turn around, a hand pulled me into the room before locking the door. And next thing l know huge hands had enveloped me in a very uncomfortable hug. It had been years since l was last embraced and the feeling was more uncomfortable that it was comforting

" could you please let me go" l asked politely, not trying to upset Antonio

"No, my wolf missed you and wouldn't stop whining unless he had his arms around you" he answered, burying his nose on my neck and sniffing me

"Did you just sniff me" l asked before laughing

"It's not me but my wolf" he said letting go and walking over to his already made bed.

"why didn't you deliver my breakfast this morning?" he asked

"I wasn't aware that it was my job but from tomorrow l will be cooking and serving all your meals. Isn't it a bit extreme?" l asked not understanding why l had to specifically prepare his meals. I wasn't even a good cook to say the least

"Because you are my mate. My wolf refuses to eat any food that isn't prepared by you" at this l laughed. What a pathetic excuse tk continue working me like a slave

"You have survived all these years without eating my food. I'm pretty sure you can survive many more years the same"

"That was before l knew who my mate was" he said. The whole system is absurd. These misogynistic pricks created a system that oppressed woman making them no different to slaves. The only difference was that we were glorified slaves. But l wasn't created to be one to settle and take what is given to me with no questions asked. I was born for greatness and these past few years l have let down my wolf all in the name of protecting our identity. But l couldn't sit back and let a whole species be ruled by such unconventional ideas. It is time to take back my throne
