Chapter 39 - Chapter 39: Cutting Ties

Ruby collapsed on the floor, her limbs giving away due to horror more than the pain. She tried looking up to her friend and asking for her forgiveness however she felt a hard smack against her cheek. Her face collided with the floor.

She tried pushing herself up Geneva stepped on the back of her head crushing her face against the dirty floor. She kicked her to roll over as Ruby groaned in pain and grief. She looked up and saw her friend's sorrowful red face filled with rage and anger.

"You lying traitorous bitch!! You took them away from me!! You took my child away from me!! You took Gallen away from me!! You betrayed me!! You are nothing but a slut who uses people for her own wicked agenda!! I'M GOING TO KILL YOU!!" she yelled in rage before raising the Sword over her head and swinging it down to split the witch's head. Ruby was able to avoid being sliced in half by moving her head a fraction from the sword's trajectory and kicking Geneva on her stomach making her stagger back against a bookshelf making some of the books fall.

Ruby mustered all her strength and willed herself to activate a healing spell to close the wound as she tried standing up. Her limbs are weak and are still unable to comply with her will making her unable to move any further.

Ruby spat out blood. She probably deserved that, all of it but she can't let herself die like this. She's closer than ever to attaining her goals and no one, not the gods or even Geneva can thwart it.

It seems that even in her weakened state Ruby's kick still packed power because Geneva took time to collect her bearings. She tried grabbing the sword but Ruby got to it first. She had one hand over her bleeding wound that barely closed with the half-decent healing magic she can procure after being severely injured.

Geneva held her stomach where the witch's feet collided. She tried standing up but chains of Azrael wrapped around her limbs restraining her. Ruby went near her with a blank look as she looked down at the auburn-haired maiden with indifference. A hard slap connected with her cheek making it sting with pain.

"I know you feel that I betrayed you and I accept your vengeance however to use my own mother's sword to harm me is just unforgivable." Ruby spat looking down at her with rage.

"You took everything from me!! You tricked me into believing that you're this kind and sweet girl instead of the poisonous snake crawling on the ground that you are!! I lost my child because of you!! And then you have the gall to be this all nice and warm to me when in truth you are Judas!!" the mage responded while thrashing wildly against the chains, trying her best to escape and hurt the witch but all her efforts are in vain.

"I hate you! I fucking hate you! I wish I never slept with you! I wish I never begged the Lightborn to save you from the Blood Moon so that the monsters can rape and kill you! I wish I poisoned every food I brought for you in the hospital! I wished I had killed you the moment that I saw you! I wished you were never born so that I could never meet you filth!" Ruby sighed as she watched the tears falling from her eyes.

"If you have not met me and begged me for a love potion then you'll never really get a shot at Gallen. The only reason you were able to feel all that happiness with him is because I gave you a chance. I gave you a choice. If I hadn't you would never even know what his cock tastes like because he never loved you."

"No! You're a lying bitch! He loves me, he truly loves me and you and that Leanna bitch conspired to destroy our relationship for what? A fucking sword?"

"It seems that you've been lying so much that even you have deceived your own self." Ruby knelt to her level staring her straight in the eyes.

"You are too accustomed to getting everything that you want so when something you really desire is already owned by someone else you went to get it the easy way. Selling even your whole family estate as a bargain price." Ruby sighed her cold glare changing into a pitying expression.

"You tried to live in a glass house Geneva only filled with the things that you like, the things that you want, and your fantasies however when someone shattered it, you ended up breaking as well. I told you there is always an end to everything. It is bound to happen sooner or later and I'm merely the catalyst."

"Shut up!! I don't want to listen to your silver tongue!! This is all your fault you deserve so burn in hell!!"

"Perhaps you're right. It's such a shame that our friendship has to end this way. But I won't let you ruin my plans. Don't worry. I still love you so I will be merciful." Ruby stood up and retrieved a pair of scissors from a box on the shelf. The sight made Geneva trash around even more.

"Get that thing away from me! I'm going to kill you!! I'm going to destroy your life and leave nothing behind. You'll be miserable." she cursed glaring furiously at the witch.

"I'm not going to hurt you. So that you can live your life you need to forget everything. Forget about Gallen, forget about me, forget about your child, and forget about this place. It will be as you have said: as if we never met and this never happened. This will all be a cruel dream. You can restart anew." Ruby spoke softly with a more gentle and caring look. Geneva couldn't do anything but look at her face as tears cascade down her cheeks. She wants to spat at the witch, yell insults at her, and curse her however her mouth doesn't seem to want to utter anything vile about the silver maiden so she just sat still and listened to her words.

"I'm sorry I cannot do more for you but I wish you the best. Truth be told, I want to be mad at you but I can't. You're just a victim of love. I was wondering if I never gave you a love potion could you have found someone else that will truly love you. Someone who deserves to have you because even though we're fighting I still admire you. You're a brave and kind-hearted woman. I never should have played with you from the start. I'm sorry." Ruby apologized with a melancholic look. She lifted the scissors in front of the mage before starting to cut invisible strings. The more she cut, the more blank Geneva's eyes became.

Ruby cried as she performed the action. Their memories flash by her head with every string she touched before having to destroy it. She erased her name from her life as well as all the events involving her since they met. She destroyed the memory of last night, of her moments with Gallen, and of all their sad and joyful memories while tears fall profusely from her eyes. She apologized with every string that she cut until only one semblance of her existence remained in her memory.

Ruby held the string of their first meeting when Geneva marched to her house unannounced and had a tea party with her. Somehow this is the hardest string to cut because her will doesn't want it to be destroyed. She watched the event unfold in her head repeating their awkward yet fun first meeting. A smile made its way to her sorrowful face.

"Well, I just want to talk to you and get to know you better. I saw you fighting in the arena and I was really impressed by your skills. All those dashes and lifesteal it looked like you were merely waltzing with your enemies in an enchanting dance macabre. I also noticed that you are quite pretty however you don't seem to like showing your face so I came to see you. I quite fancy seeing beautiful blooming flowers like you." Geneva answered with an embarrassed smile, blushing a little as she answered.

This line made her heart bounce with joy at the moment but now it only brings her sorrow as she has to destroy it. With shaking hands Ruby brought the scissors near the thread.

"I w-w-wish we could h-ha-ave ta-taken a dif-frent pa-th may-be we could still be f-f-friends. I really en-joyed y-your tea and t-the ti-me we spent to-get her..." she heard Geneva stutter as she looked at the scissors. Ruby bit her lip in lamentation, drawing out blood. Her own body is weak from the blood loss and her hand is getting harder and harder to lift as her own head swirl with clouded vision and darkness.

"Yeah, I wish we could have." she weakly replied before snapping the last thread making the mage pass out.

This time Ruby didn't stop the tears falling from her eyes. She released all her bottled up frustration and screamed all her sorrows away. She begged for forgiveness even though she knew that she didn't deserve it. She released Geneva from Azrael's chains and cradled her body in her arms as she laments their friendship that ended in sorrow and betrayal.
