Chapter 20 - Spotlight#18:Eleceed

Have you ever been much of a cat person? If you haven't, then your probably not going to like the next webtoon as we touch on the high-flying full-throttle pet-loving story called Eleceed by Zhena and Jeho Son, the creators of both Noblesse and Girls of the wilds.

Reputation

Eleceed right out of the gate has a little uneasiness behind its inception. While both of its predecessors are classics of the massive webtoon roster they're also infamous for their very shocking, abrupt and rushed conclusions, because of this webtoon does already have a sharp stigma from the bitter fanbases of both. Might as well say it right here and now by saying while I'm not a big fan of how these series ended I for one that will judge this as its own thing with its only comparisons being made to help make the review easier.

Summary

On the surface, Jiwoo seems like your average South Korean teenager, but beneath that, playful facade lies the heart of... crazy cat lady! Every day Jiwoo would devote his time to feeding and taking care of any cat that he can get his hands on, until one day he finds one that can talk! And while this new arrival might be only temporary, it will turn his curse into a blessing.

Characters

Jiwoo: If cinnamon roll was a proper adjective, Jiwoo fits the bill perfectly. Ever since he was a child, Jiwoo has been awakened one: a being granted supernatural powers at a young age. Though unlike most awakened, Jiwoo never knew about others like him until recently. While he initially thought his super-speed was something to be ashamed of, his new "cat" had taught him to not only embrace them but also evolved them. Either way, Ji-woo is stubborn, compassionate, and energetic, all while doing it in the cutest way possible.

Kayden: The most powerful awakened in the world Kayden lived in very eat or be eaten world. Though due to his cockiness and assertive attitude, he was forced into a fight that nearly kills him, he uses his immense power to hide in the body of a cat. Though his body might not be what it once was with his wealth of awakened knowledge and Jiwoo's talent, he hopes to tutor the young awakened if only out of boredom.

Wooin: One of Jiwoo's few friends Woonin, is a stoic man with a lot of kindness. While he was raised in an abusive relationship, he never let his caretaker define his actions and has become one of Jiwoo's most loyal companions.

Jisuk: A punk kid with everything to prove Jisuk belongs to a family of high tiered awakened. Jisuk is always ready for a fight and appeal to his fragile pride. He may be a spoiled brat, but he is a spoiled brat with morals and tsundere tendencies.

Overview

The art looks more like a streamlined version of Girls of the Wild, which makes the various powers of the series extra stylish. The comedic tones of both the former and Noblesse also shine through in a variety of hilarious scenes. Eleceed also does wonders to show the gap between various awakened from the weak to the strong. The lore of Eleceed is also defined yet mysterious; it instead focuses more on the various character reactions in it, causing a much more memorable cast. That still doesn't stop the series from dipping into awakened society, viewing it as a series of predators under the guise of mob-like businesses. Many of the awakened abilities we do see our fun in the series' many battles (super speed, telekinesis, ice, etc.). The series is still brand new, so there is still much more to wait.

Epilogue

Overall I can see eleceed as a much lighter fantasy comedy, which I'm all for. Though only time will tell if that truly stays. So my Feline Fatales until the next spotlight I hope you have a purrfect day.
