Damien stood outside the hotel. Most of the time, one could see him wearing a black sweatshirt and jeans; carrying a backpack where he keeps all his equipment.
"Don't you have to hide your identity?", A hunter next to him asked, as Damien came within hailing distance. There were several police cars parked illegally in front of the building. He avoided looking at Damien's eyes. Damien has to give him credit for being brave. There is something dangerously special about his eyes.
They rode the elevator in a sudden silence. They knew one another well enough, by this time, that the silences were not uncomfortable. Damien could sense the tension on the moment - something a skill he develops whenever he around someone for any length of time. Whether it's a natural talent or a magic one I don't know.
Damien enhanced his senses with magic as they are his tools for this investigation. He let out a harsh breath just as the elevator slowed, then sucked in another one before the doors could open, as though he was planning on holding it for as long as we were on the floor and breathing only when he got back in the elevator again.
The smell of urine with a tinge of copper; and the air were full of it when the elevator doors opened. Their stomach quailed a little bit; and followed Damien out of the elevator and down the hall past a couple of uniform cops. They didn't try to stop us as they were affected by a mental spell. This is why magicians use metal wards, a simple thought panted in your mind and it is easy to manipulate you. One of the first Damien learnt while studying the Mystic Arts.
The hunter preceded Damien into the room. The smell of blood grew thicker, others couldn't smell it but with enhanced sense; Damien and the hunter weren't so lucky. The outer room of the suite looked like some kind of a sitting room done in rich tones of red and gold, there were no signs of struggle. Dark, rich leather covered the chairs, and Damien's feet sank into the thick, brown coloured shag of the carpet. The red curtains had been drawn, and though the lights were all on, the place still seemed a little too dark, a little too sensual in its textures and colours It wasn't the kind of room where you sit and read a book.
"Horrific stench.", came a girl's voice. "What do you think?" A girl with around average height, short blonde hair and green hair entered our sight. Selah Blade, someone Damien knew; an expert in making explosives and a part of an elite team.
"Selah," Damien said, without turning around. He turned and looked around. "Where is Jack? The other Blueborne."
"Jack is busy on a different mission." hunter explained.
Damien: "Pity... It would be more fun with him being here."
"Now, could we start our investigation? I am a blueborne too." Selah interjected before Damien could say anything else. She didn't like Damien, and she had a valid reason. Damien almost killed her in one of their previous encounters.
Blueborne... they different from other magic users. While magicians like Damien himself had to study and learn their craft, Bluebornes are born with magical abilities like fire manipulation, invisibility, each different or some time similar.
Selah went toward the bedroom and they both followed. This was the source of the wrenched scent. The room showed cleared signs of struggle, broken lamp, broken tv. Damien could see the see stains and drops of wiped out blood.
Damien: "When did the incident take place?"
Hunter: "Around 4 am according to the manager."
Damien: "Victims, age and gender."
Hunter: "32 male and 31 female."
Damien: "It was pretty dark, huh..."
Damien went near the cracked window and analysed it, then moved to analyse the bloodstains. Now he got it. He jumped on the bed and laid there with his eyes closed.
Selah: "What are you doing? The evidence!", she screamed.
Damien: " Shut up! Let me process all this."
Damien relaxed his body.
Hunter: "Dam..."
Damien: "Shush..."
Damien laid there for thirty seconds and got up and sat on the edge. "I got it!"
Selah: "What?!"
Damien: "The victims were near the bed close to each other, then suddenly...", he put his hands on the window. "They started fighting."
Selah: "How did you..."
Damien: "No... don't ask."
Damien went to the bed again. "One of them pushed the other one." Then near one corner of the room, "The other one dropped to the other side near the lamp. He or she grabbed the lamp and thew at the attacker." Then to the other side of the room where the lamp was fallen. "The attacker deflected the attack throwing the lamp to the other side. They fought for a bit and one of them smashed one's head against the window. There is only enough evidence to speculate one death. Another one must have escaped through the window."
Selah looked at me with wide eyes opened. Damien looked at her and said, "Told you he is fit for the job."
Hunter: "So, it's ?"
Damien: "Based on this, yes... Based on the previous incident, no. A creature like this couldn't kill a gymnasium filled with 43 people without a single one escaping alive." He said remembering the old demonic serpent case.
Selah grunted, sourly. "Nothing we hadn't already figured out for ourselves.", she said to the hunter "He'd better come up with more than this."
Hunter shot Selah a look that said "shut up.", then said, softly, "I need more, Damien."
Damien ran one of his hands back over his hair. "There are only two ways anyone could have managed this. The first is by summoning a high-level demon in this world to this or a shape-shifting creature is behind all this. There is more but there isn't sufficient evidence. Then the girl later exploded from inside. Blood magic? The room is covered in wiped out bloodstain."
Selah: "Demons kill people and devour their soul, not bodies. I haven't heard of any demon using blood magic."
Damien: "You haven't faced a high-level demon. Have you?"
Her face turned red after hearing this. Hunter continued, "I'll do my part. But I need you to figure out more about this case."
Damien: "I would need some time to figure things out."
Selah: "Fine... DE has arranged a workplace for us."
