(Gregory's POV)
Twisting. Turning. Twisting. Turning.
"Ugh. Damn it! What should I do?" I try to rack my brain for a plan, pacing back and forth in the cell. I've already used the knife Jaisley gave me to unlock myself from my chains.
Throwing. Catching. Throwing. Catching.
That's all I've been doing for days. Just throwing the knife in the air and catching it repeatedly. I've been doing this for at least five days.
Since I've been locked in this dungeon, not one guard has come in to visit me or even give me food. It's hard to kill guards and create distractions when no one even enters your cell. I can't even just walk out of here. The lock is on the other side of the door.
I've already tried using magic. The whole cell is a magic dampener and I'm definitely not strong enough to break open a steel door.
Is their plan just to starve me until I'm too weak to even talk?
I know their schedule. They always bring in new prisoners at noon, like when they transferred me, they serve food to the prisoners around three in the afternoon, lights out at six at night, and lights back on at five in the morning.
Everytime they pass by my cell, I prepare myself to kill, but then they pass right past me and I hear them chuckle, as if they know it drives me crazy.
But yesterday was different. The same footsteps I hear around food serving time, I didn't hear them pass a second time to leave the dungeon. I'm not sure what happened to them, but after a couple of hours I heard more footsteps come down here and they seemed panicked. I couldn't hear what they were saying, but I'm guessing one of the prisoners were distracting them well enough.
I wish I could just magic up some food. The first two days I didn't care about eating because I had so much adrenaline pumping through my veins I couldn't even think about it. Three more days past and now I'm bored and hungry.
I never thought I'd the person who'd thirst for some enjoyment through killing. That was always more of Anne's role, but now I see where she gets it from. She definitely gets it from me. Her mom was more of a "let's just get this mission over with" type. She didn't get joy from her job and she never tried to find the adventure in it.
Does it make me a bad person if I try to find joy in my job of killing and capturing? Did I create a monster within Anne? It's probably my fault all of this is happening. I raised her to be a killer, but I also taught her values. Am I bad father?
Ugh! This cell is making me think too much. I need a distraction.
My ears perk up at the sound of footsteps coming down the stairs. Probably around three or four people. They're off schedule. It's not time for lights out yet. It's only around five in the evening.
The footsteps are getting closer and closer to my cell, but I don't have much hope that they'll stop here. I was going to ignore it, but I hear them slow down when they're a few inches from my door.
Is it finally time? Are they finally coming into my cell?
"Is this his cell," I hear a muffled voice ask right outside my door. A muffled yes answers them. Then I hear the locks on my door move and rattle, and I almost hold my breath in shock. Then I remember my mission is to kill. So I pull out my knife to be ready.
Surprisingly, Giovanni and three guards walk into my cell. A look of shock appears on their faces because I'm not in my chains, but Giovanni covers the look with an excited smile. Why is he smiling?
"Well, good afternoon to you too Greg," Giovanni says in a sarcastic tone. I lock my jaw, feeling annoyed that he's taking this all as a joke. "Your family is always so ready to kill. I think I did right locking you guys up, even if it didn't last long," he says.
"What the hell are you talking about," I ask him. He puts on a fake sorrowful expression.
"Oh, don't act dumb with me. This was all a plan, wasn't it? You found some way to get Chris out of her cell and she escaped," Giovanni says, moving closer to me.
Chris got out? How'd she do that? I've been looking for a way out for days and I hadn't found any. Am I getting too old for solving puzzles? If there was a way out I should have found one.
"By the confused look on your face I can see that you didn't know anything about her grand escape. I guess your family just all has the same mindset. Kill, kill, and kill. Chris killed the guards and I'm guessing you were planning on doing the same." Giovanni continues rambling on.
"What was the point of your visit," I ask him. It didn't seem like he really had an end goal, he just seemed entertained by talking to prisoners.
"Hmm. Maybe your agent talents will be some good use to me," he says. He paused his rambling and seemed to be thinking. "How about we make a deal," he says, a chilling smile on his face.
"And what would that be," I entertain his question.
"I have some people that need to be found and brought here. I heard that was your job before coming here to New Orleans. Catching criminals. You could do it for me. You can find Anne and Chris as part of the job. They can be your first mission."
"Why would I agree to that," I ask him, even more confused. He steps up just inches in front of me now.
"Because, if you find them first, I won't kill them. I'll just place them in cells. But, if I find them first, I'm killing them the instant I find them." His eyes are wild and he enjoys the look of horror on my face. I ball my fists, ready to punch this kid in the face again.
"That deal won't be necessary." Giovanni and I look back by the cell door at the voice of a familiar female. Her voice boomed through the room and it holds a heavy power.
The first thing I see is this six feet figure with black high heels and floor length, straight black hair. Black pants over her legs and she has on a white, button up, long sleeve blouse. She's rolling up the sleeves of the shirt to her elbows. Her dark eyes stare right into our souls.
"Kora," Giovanni and I say at the same time. We both stare in disbelief as the vampire head of the court stands in front of us.
"Sorry it took so long to get here. Lets just say it was traffic. Cassandra couldn't make it. She's dealing with other issues as witch representative, but she sent me with her requests."
