He'd almost been fired for meddling in the case but as he had told his superiors if they didn't involve local police then there would be trouble. Fortunately, his connections had approached him and he'd explained the situation.
It was simply that his wife had been kidnapped and the kidnappers had held her hostage asking for his removal from the case. Fortunately, their demand had come while he was with his senior boss so he had put his phone on speaker. They had warned him not to involve any police agency and he hadn't, technically.
He had been put into protective custody and removed from the case. He returned to the family business as soon as he turned over all the evidence he had. There was even a goodbye party from the guys at the station to wish him well on his early retirement.
He looked for her for months after that. He got all the assistance he needed when he needed it which wasn't often.
