Chereads / Captain Gargle / Chapter 2 - Chapter 1

Chapter 2 - Chapter 1

The sky above Planet Gargle was a deep, sickly green. It swirled in ominous currents, like a storm brewing over an endless sea. Below, the glittering cities of Gargle hummed with frantic energy, their crystal towers reaching toward the heavens as if grasping for salvation. But salvation would not come—not today. Today, destruction loomed in the form of the Cavities, and they were relentless. In the heart of the capital city, Commander Floss stood before a grand holographic map, its light casting a blue glow over her face. Her jaw was tight, and her silvery eyes reflected the countless red blips swarming across the map—enemy ships. The Cavities were closing in fast. Commander Floss' tall, lean frame was tense, and her white armor, adorned with a symbol of a shining tooth, barely masked the weight of her worry."Status report," she commanded, her voice sharp and precise.Lieutenant Paste, a young officer with bright eyes and nervous energy, rushed to her side, saluting quickly before speaking. "General Blaguda's fleet has broken through the outer defenses, Commander. They're within striking distance of the capital now."Floss's hand clenched into a fist, her nails digging into her palm. "What about the shield generators? Are they operational?""Not for long, ma'am. The Cavities are using some kind of acid beam to corrode the shield matrix. We've never seen anything like it."Floss turned away from the map, pacing the length of the war room. Every step felt heavy, the ground beneath her feet vibrating with the distant rumble of explosions. The Cavities weren't just attacking—they were devouring. Their black, tooth-shaped ships cut through the sky like fangs biting into flesh, their acidic beams corroding everything they touched. She stopped suddenly, her gaze snapping to the young lieutenant. "Get me Dr. Rinse. Now."Lieutenant Paste nodded and hurried to comply, tapping his comms unit and relaying the order. Moments later, the massive doors to the war room slid open with a hiss, and Dr. Rinse entered. He was a tall, thin man, his white coat trailing behind him as he walked with quick, determined strides. His sharp features were etched with the lines of someone who had lived through countless battles, but his eyes gleamed with hope—or desperation."Commander," he said, giving a short nod. "You called for me?"Floss turned to face him fully, her eyes searching his face. "We're out of time, Rinse. General Blaguda will be here any minute. Do we have the Gargle ready?"Dr. Rinse's expression faltered for a split second, and Floss's heart sank."It's not perfected yet," he admitted, his voice tight with frustration. "The formula is unstable. If we use it now, there's no telling what could happen."Floss's eyes narrowed. "If we don't use it, there won't be anything left of Planet Gargle. And Earth will be next. We can't let them have it."Dr. Rinse hesitated, then slowly nodded. "The Gargle is stored in the vault beneath the capital. I'll prepare it for transport.""Good. Get to it." Floss's voice brooked no argument, and Dr. Rinse turned on his heel, leaving the room as quickly as he had come.As the door slid shut behind him, Floss allowed herself a moment to breathe. Her mind raced, calculating every possible outcome, every strategy that might slow the Cavities down. But the truth was brutal: Planet Gargle's defenders were outmatched, outgunned, and the enemy was closing in faster than they could regroup. Her thoughts were interrupted by a crackle in her earpiece."Commander, we've got incoming!" a panicked voice shouted over the comms. "Cavity ships are dropping into the lower atmosphere. They're heading straight for the palace!"Floss's breath hitched, but her resolve remained firm. "All units, hold the line. Evacuate civilians to the underground tunnels and fortify all key points. We must protect the Gargle at all costs."----Outside, the capital city descended into chaos. Alarms blared through the air, echoing across the gleaming towers as civilians scrambled toward the underground shelters. In the streets, defenders of Planet Gargle—an eclectic mix of soldiers in white and silver armor—rushed to their stations, laser rifles and energy shields ready. But their eyes betrayed their fear.Above them, the sky was torn open as the first wave of Cavity ships broke through the atmosphere, their hulls glinting like obsidian in the greenish light. They were ugly, monstrous things, shaped like twisted teeth and covered in corrosive grime that ate away at anything they touched. From each ship's underbelly, black-armored Cavity troopers descended on the city like a swarm of locusts. At the forefront of the invasion, General Blaguda stood on the bridge of her flagship, a menacing figure clad in dark, jagged armor. Her red eyes gleamed with malice as she watched the destruction unfold beneath her. A twisted smile played on her cracked lips as she spoke into the ship's intercom."Planet Gargle is ripe for the plucking," she hissed, her voice a gravelly purr. "Soon, it will be nothing but rot and decay. Send in the acid drones."The order was relayed, and moments later, swarms of spherical drones burst forth from the Cavity ships, their smooth surfaces gleaming with toxic chemicals. They descended on the city, spraying acid that ate through buildings, streets, and anything in their path.Down below, Floss had made her way to the front lines. She stood with her troops, watching as the acid drones unleashed their havoc. Her jaw clenched in anger."We need those anti-air turrets up now!" she shouted, waving her hand toward a group of engineers who were frantically working to bring the city's defenses online."They're almost ready, Commander!" one of them yelled back, sweat streaming down his face.Floss turned her attention to the incoming Cavity troopers. They were getting closer, their black-armored figures sprinting through the streets, firing acidic rounds that sizzled through walls and vehicles. She raised her laser rifle, taking careful aim before firing a precise shot that hit one of the troopers square in the chest, sending him tumbling to the ground."We hold this line," she called out to her soldiers, her voice steady despite the chaos around her. "We hold it, or we die!"The troops around her cheered, their spirits bolstered by her words. They fired their weapons in unison, lighting up the streets with bursts of blue energy. For a moment, the tide seemed to turn, with Cavity troopers falling under the barrage of laser fire. But then, with a deafening roar, one of the Cavity ships descended low over the city, its acid cannons swiveling to target the defenders.Floss's eyes widened as she realized what was about to happen. "Get down!"The street erupted in a fountain of acid, the liquid spraying in all directions. Soldiers screamed as the corrosive substance burned through their armor and skin. Buildings crumbled, their foundations melting away like sugar in water. Floss ducked behind a crumbling barricade, the stench of burning metal and flesh filling her nostrils. For a moment, all she could hear was the sound of her own breathing, ragged and strained. She glanced around, her heart sinking at the sight of her fallen comrades. This was worse than she had imagined.------She had to get to the vault. The Gargle—the only hope of stopping the Cavities—was all that mattered now. Everything else was lost.Floss stood, her limbs aching from the exertion, and motioned for the remaining soldiers to fall back. "Retreat to the palace! We have to secure the Gargle!"Her remaining troops obeyed, pulling back from the burning streets toward the palace gates. As they ran, Floss felt a growing sense of dread. They were outnumbered and outgunned. If they didn't act fast, General Blaguda would reach the Gargle before they did.As they approached the palace, Floss tapped into her comms unit, opening a channel to the war room. "Lieutenant Paste, what's your status?""We're evacuating the last of the civilians, Commander," Paste's voice crackled through the speaker. "But we can't hold out much longer. The Cavities are overwhelming our defenses.""Forget the defenses," Floss snapped. "Meet me at the vault. We need to get the Gargle out of here, now."There was a pause on the other end, then Paste responded with a shaky, "Understood, Commander."Floss and her remaining squad burst through the palace doors, racing through the grand hallways toward the vault. The once-beautiful palace, with its gleaming white walls and intricate carvings, now felt cold and hollow. The distant sound of explosions reverberated through the halls, a constant reminder that time was running out. When they reached the vault, Dr. Rinse was already there, his hands trembling as he worked to unlock the massive door. Lieutenant Paste stood beside him, his face pale but determined."It's ready," Dr. Rinse said, his voice barely above a whisper. He stepped aside as the vault door slowly creaked open, revealing the glowing vial inside. The Gargle. The liquid shimmered with an ethereal light, swirling with hues of blue and silver. It was said to hold the power to neutralize any force of decay, a creation so potent it could cleanse entire worlds. But it was also volatile, unstable, and if mishandled, could destroy everything.Floss stared at the vial, her mind racing. They couldn't let it fall into enemy hands, but using it was a risk. She reached out, her fingers brushing the cool surface of the vial."We need to get this to Earth," she said firmly. "It's the only way."Lieutenant Paste frowned. "Earth? But how? The Cavity ships are everywhere, and our fleet is decimated."Floss turned to him, her expression resolute. "There's a ship in the underground hangar. A stealth cruiser. It's our best chance."Dr. Rinse nodded, his eyes flicking between Floss and the vial. "You're right. But someone will have to stay behind to activate the self-destruct sequence. We can't let Blaguda take Planet Gargle. If she gets her hands on our technology..."Floss knew what he was implying. Her heart ached at the thought, but she had no choice. Someone had to sacrifice themselves for the greater good."I'll stay," she said quietly, her voice unwavering. "You take the Gargle and get to Earth. Save them."Lieutenant Paste's eyes widened. "Commander, no—""That's an order," Floss snapped, her tone brokering no argument. She turned to Dr. Rinse. "Get the vial to safety. I'll buy you as much time as I can."Dr. Rinse nodded solemnly. He carefully secured the vial in a protective case, then handed it to Paste. "Go, now."As Paste and Rinse turned to leave, Floss took a deep breath, her eyes hardening with resolve. She watched them disappear into the hallway, and then she turned back to the vault. The sound of approaching footsteps echoed through the palace—Blaguda's forces were close.Floss activated the terminal beside the vault door, her fingers flying over the controls. The self-destruct sequence began its countdown, a mechanical voice announcing, "Self-destruct in T-minus five minutes."She clenched her fists, standing tall as the door to the vault slid shut. There was no turning back now.The last thing she saw before the blast doors sealed her in was the shimmering light of the Gargle, a flicker of hope in the darkness of war.----As the countdown ticked away, Commander Floss stood in the heart of the vault, her hand resting on her laser rifle. The hum of the self-destruct mechanism pulsed through the walls, vibrating beneath her feet. The distant sound of footsteps grew louder, the telltale march of Blaguda's elite Cavity forces. They were coming, and soon they would find her.But that was exactly what she wanted. She checked her comms device one last time. "Lieutenant Paste, do you copy?"Paste's voice crackled through the earpiece. "Commander, we're clear. The stealth cruiser is ready for launch."Floss allowed herself a brief smile. Good. They were safe—at least for now. "Take care of the Gargle, Lieutenant. Earth depends on it.""We won't fail you, Commander," Paste's voice trembled, but it carried a conviction that steadied Floss's heart. "Thank you... for everything."She ended the transmission before the emotions could take hold. There was no time for second thoughts, no time for goodbyes. She had a job to do.The vault doors quivered as an explosion rocked the palace halls, and the heavy doors began to melt under the corrosive acid of Blaguda's forces. Floss readied her rifle, her body coiled like a spring, every muscle on edge. They were nearly through. In the faint reflection of the polished metal walls, she caught a glimpse of herself—dusty, bloodied, but determined. She was the last line of defense, and she would make this count. The doors finally burst open with a deafening crash, and the first wave of Cavity troopers poured into the room. Their black armor glistened with acid, and their weapons hummed menacingly as they charged toward her.Floss didn't hesitate. She squeezed the trigger of her rifle, unleashing a barrage of blue energy bolts that cut through the troopers' ranks. Her shots were precise, calculated, each one finding its mark. The first three Cavity soldiers fell before they even raised their weapons."Come on!" she shouted, her voice a roar of defiance as she stepped forward, continuing her assault. More Cavity soldiers filled the space, their numbers overwhelming. But Floss moved like a warrior born, her rifle flashing and her feet quick as she ducked behind columns and dodged the enemy fire. She knew she couldn't hold them off forever, but every second counted. With each fallen soldier, she bought more time for Paste and Rinse to get away.Suddenly, a deep, rumbling voice filled the vault."Commander Floss."Floss froze. Her grip on her rifle tightened as General Blaguda stepped through the smoldering wreckage of the vault's entrance. The towering figure of Blaguda moved with terrifying grace, her red eyes burning with malevolence. Her jagged armor seemed to absorb the very light around her, casting a shadow across the room."So," Blaguda purred, a twisted smile forming on her lips, "this is the great Commander Floss. Guardian of Planet Gargle, the last defender of a doomed world."Floss didn't flinch. She stood tall, rifle aimed squarely at Blaguda's chest. "You won't get the Gargle, Blaguda."Blaguda laughed, the sound low and sinister. "Oh, Commander, I don't need to get the Gargle. Soon, there will be no one left to use it."Her words were venomous, but Floss stood her ground. "That's where you're wrong."Blaguda's smile faltered as she took a step forward, her eyes narrowing. "You think you can stop me? This planet is already mine. Your people are broken, your defenses shattered. What hope do you have?"Floss's finger hovered over the trigger, her heartbeat steady. "Hope isn't something you can corrode with acid, Blaguda. It's stronger than you think."For a moment, there was silence between them. The sounds of battle faded into the background, and the two commanders locked eyes—one filled with malice, the other with unyielding resolve.Blaguda's smile twisted into a snarl. "Then let's see if your hope can survive this."With a speed that belied her size, Blaguda lunged forward, her arm sweeping out in a wide arc. Floss barely managed to dodge, rolling to the side as Blaguda's fist slammed into the ground, leaving a crater where she had stood moments before.Floss fired her rifle, the energy blast striking Blaguda's armor. But the general barely flinched, her armor absorbing the impact with a hiss."You'll have to do better than that, Commander," Blaguda taunted, her voice dripping with contempt.Floss gritted her teeth. She needed to buy more time. She fired again, aiming for Blaguda's exposed joints, but the Cavity general was fast. She deflected the shot with a swift motion, her jagged armor scraping against the floor as she advanced. Before Floss could react, Blaguda was upon her. The force of the general's blow knocked Floss to the ground, her rifle skidding out of reach. Pain exploded in her chest, but she pushed it aside, rolling to her feet in one fluid motion.Blaguda laughed, a sound that echoed in the cavernous vault. "I can see why they sent you, Floss. You're a fighter. But even the strongest fighters fall."Floss wiped a streak of blood from her lip, her breathing heavy but controlled. "We'll see about that."She glanced at the terminal beside her—the countdown was at two minutes. She just had to hold on a little longer. With a growl of determination, she rushed forward, dodging Blaguda's next swing and diving for her rifle. In one smooth motion, she grabbed the weapon and rolled to her feet, firing off another series of shots. This time, she aimed at the control panel on the far side of the vault. The blast hit its mark, and the entire room was plunged into darkness. The lights flickered, and the hum of the self-destruct mechanism grew louder, more urgent.Blaguda let out a furious roar, her eyes glowing red in the dim light. "What have you done?!"Floss smiled grimly as she backed toward the far wall, her rifle raised. "It's over, Blaguda. You're not leaving this planet."Blaguda snarled, her jagged teeth bared. "Neither are you."Floss nodded, her heart pounding. "I know."-----Meanwhile, in the underground hangar, Lieutenant Paste and Dr. Rinse were racing against time. The stealth cruiser, a sleek ship designed for covert operations, was powered up and ready for launch. Its engines hummed softly, a stark contrast to the chaos above.Paste secured the case containing the Gargle in the ship's cargo hold, his hands shaking as he sealed it shut. He turned to Dr. Rinse, his voice strained. "Do you think she'll make it?"Dr. Rinse didn't answer immediately. His face was pale, his eyes distant. Finally, he shook his head, his voice barely a whisper. "I don't know, Lieutenant. But we can't wait any longer."Paste swallowed hard, nodding as he climbed into the pilot's seat. "Let's get out of here."The ship's engines roared to life as they lifted off the hangar floor. The stealth field activated, cloaking the vessel from any enemy sensors as it shot up through the tunnels and into the sky.As they soared into space, Paste glanced back at Planet Gargle, the once-beautiful world now a battlefield of fire and ash. His chest tightened with grief, but he forced himself to focus. They had a mission to complete."Goodbye, Commander," he whispered.-----Back in the vault, Floss stood her ground as Blaguda charged at her, the force of the general's fury shaking the ground beneath them. But Floss didn't falter. She fired one last shot, not at Blaguda, but at the ceiling above. The blast weakened the structure, and chunks of debris began to fall, blocking Blaguda's path. The Cavity general howled in frustration, her movements slowed by the wreckage.Floss staggered back, her body bruised and battered, but still standing. The countdown had reached its final seconds."T-minus 10 seconds," the mechanical voice intoned.Blaguda's eyes widened in realization, her snarl turning into a scream of rage. "No!"Floss smiled faintly, her eyes closing as the final second ticked away. The palace erupted in a blinding explosion, a wave of energy and fire consuming everything in its path. The ground trembled, and the sky lit up as the self-destruct sequence obliterated the capital of Planet Gargle. In the heart of the explosion, Commander Floss stood tall, a final beacon of hope amidst the destruction.-----The stealth cruiser slipped through the fabric of space, unnoticed by the Cavity fleet that circled Planet Gargle's remains. Inside, Paste and Rinse sat in silence, the weight of what they had left behind pressing down on them.Dr. Rinse finally broke the silence, his voice quiet. "She gave us a chance. We have to make sure it's not in vain."Paste nodded, his throat tight. "We will. For her. For Planet Gargle."Ahead of them, Earth shimmered like a blue jewel in the darkness of space, a world unaware of the storm that was coming. But now, they had the Gargle—the one thing that could turn the tide."We're coming, Earth," Paste murmured, his eyes fixed on the distant planet. "And we're going to finish what she started."As the ship sped toward Earth, hope once again flickered in the vast expanse of the universe, a fragile light that refused to be extinguished. The war was far from over. But with the Gargle in their hands, and the memory of Commander Floss driving them forward, they were ready for whatever came next. The fight for Earth had only just begun.---Chapter End---
