Chereads / Captain Gargle / Chapter 5 - Chapter 4

Chapter 5 - Chapter 4

Michael yawned as he trudged down the dimly lit street toward his apartment. The eerie quiet of the small town after his investigation with Belle had left him on edge, and his mind buzzed with the cryptic warning from the man at the diner. "They're coming," he had said. But who—or what—was "they"? Michael couldn't shake the feeling that something big was lurking just beyond his grasp, waiting to reveal itself. He turned the corner into the park, taking a shortcut through the shadowy trees. His thoughts were focused entirely on Belle, the investigation, and the strange sense of anticipation that had followed him since that cryptic conversation.Suddenly, a bright flash of light tore through the sky, lighting up the park like a firework. Michael froze mid-step, shielding his eyes from the intense glow. The light seemed to hover in midair, crackling with energy before it shot downward—directly toward him.Instinctively, Michael dove for cover behind a nearby bench, his heart hammering in his chest. "What the hell was that?"When the light faded, a figure stood in its place. Tall, armored, and imposing, the person's silhouette cut through the darkness, illuminated by the soft glow of their suit. As they stepped forward, Michael saw the armor gleaming in the faint moonlight—a mix of metallic silver and white, covered in strange, tooth-like symbols. The figure moved with purpose, and their eyes, glowing faintly beneath their helmet, locked onto him."Who are you?" Michael croaked, still half-hidden behind the bench. The figure didn't answer immediately. Instead, they approached with slow, deliberate steps until they stood just a few feet away from him. Michael's pulse quickened. He considered running, but something about the figure's presence rooted him to the spot."I am Commander Floss," the figure finally spoke, their voice clear and authoritative. "Guardian of Planet Gargle. And Earth's last hope."Michael blinked, trying to process the words. "Wait, you're from where? And—Earth's last hope? What are you talking about?"Commander Floss removed her helmet, revealing a striking face—sharp, determined, with piercing silver eyes that held the weight of countless battles. "There's no time to explain everything. The Cavities are coming. They've already destroyed my home planet, and now they're coming for yours. Earth needs a champion to stand against them.""Cavities? Like... like tooth cavities?"Floss nodded solemnly, though there was no hint of humor in her expression. "Exactly. They consume everything in their path, spreading decay. If they reach Earth, this planet will rot from the inside out."Michael blinked, trying to wrap his head around what she was saying. Cavities? An alien invasion? None of this made sense. "And what does this have to do with me?"Floss took a step closer, her expression serious. "I've been searching for someone worthy of this," she said, reaching into a small compartment on her armor. She pulled out a small, shimmering vial of liquid. It sparkled in the faint light, casting a blue glow. "The Magic Gargle. The only weapon strong enough to counter the Cavities' corruption. With this, you will become Earth's champion."Michael stared at the vial, his mind racing. "Wait—me? I'm just a reporter! Why would you give something like this to me?"Floss didn't hesitate. "You were chosen. This magic doesn't seek out the strongest warrior or the most skilled fighter. It seeks the pure of heart. You, Michael, are that person."Before he could protest, Floss pressed the vial into his hands. It felt cool and strangely light. "But I don't know the first thing about fighting," he stammered. "I'm not a hero.""You will be."------Michael stood frozen, staring down at the vial in his hands. He looked up at Floss, a mixture of disbelief and confusion on his face. "What am I supposed to do with this?""Use it," Floss said, her voice steady. "The Gargle will give you the power to fight. But be warned—it only works if you are truly committed. You must gargle the liquid and declare your transformation."Michael blinked. "Declare my... transformation? Like, what, shouting something dramatic? 'For justice!' or 'I am the chosen one!'?"Floss frowned slightly. "It's not that simple. You need to find the phrase that unlocks your power. It's different for everyone."Michael felt the weight of the vial in his hand and took a deep breath. "Okay, fine. But what am I supposed to say?"Floss stepped back, watching him carefully. "You'll know."Michael unscrewed the vial and stared at the shimmering liquid inside. "Here goes nothing." He hesitantly took a sip and began gargling, the strange liquid fizzing in his mouth. Then, with great determination, he shouted the first thing that came to mind—through the gargle."Power activate!"Nothing happened.Michael choked slightly on the liquid, coughing as he tried again. "Transform!"Still nothing.Floss winced sympathetically. "Keep trying.""Hero time!" Michael gargled, nearly swallowing the magic liquid by mistake. He coughed, struggling to keep it together. "This is ridiculous," he muttered between attempts. "What am I supposed to say?"And then it hit him. His grandmother's voice echoed in his mind, as clear as if she were standing right beside him, reminding him of every meal, every polite gesture. The simplest, most familiar phrase he knew. With a burst of realization, Michael gargled and shouted, "Excuse me po!"Suddenly, the air around him shimmered with energy. The Magic Gargle surged through his body, transforming him from the inside out. A brilliant blue and white aura erupted around him, his clothes morphing into a gleaming superhero suit adorned with symbols of teeth and floss. His breath, now crisp and minty, filled the air with a refreshing breeze.Floss watched with approval as Michael's transformation completed. "There it is," she said, nodding. "You've unlocked your power."Michael looked down at himself in awe, his new suit gleaming in the moonlight. He felt stronger—invincible even. "Whoa... This is incredible!"-----Floss stepped forward, her expression serious once more. "You are now Captain Gargle, the defender of Earth. With this power, you can take on the Cavities and protect your planet. But be careful—using the magic comes with great responsibility."Michael, still overwhelmed by his new appearance, tried to process everything. "Captain... Gargle?" He looked down at the emblem on his chest—a shining white tooth framed by a circle of mint leaves. "Okay, it's not exactly what I imagined, but it'll do."Floss handed him a small device—a communicator of sorts. "This will help you locate the Cavities when they begin their assault. Use it wisely. And remember, the Gargle's magic is unpredictable. You'll need to practice."Michael nodded, still buzzing with energy. "So, what now? Do I—wait, can I fly?!" His eyes lit up with excitement.Floss hesitated. "Yes, but... well, it might be different for you."Michael's face split into a wide grin. Without thinking, he crouched down, preparing to launch into the sky like every superhero he had ever read about. He took a deep breath, exclaiming, "Excuse me po!"With a sudden whoosh of air, Michael lifted off the ground—only not the way he expected. Instead of soaring upright like a majestic hero, Michael found himself seated midair, as though perched on an invisible chair. His legs dangled awkwardly beneath him, and he wobbled slightly as he floated a few feet above the ground. He stared at Floss, his eyebrows raised in confusion. "Am I... sitting?"Floss sighed, though she couldn't suppress a small smile. "It appears your flight form is... unique."Michael looked down at his floating, seated self. "Great. I'm the only superhero who flies like he's on a bench."Floss nodded, a hint of amusement in her eyes. "It's unconventional, but you'll get used to it."Michael sighed but quickly grinned. "Well, at least I can fly."----After a few minutes of awkward hovering, Michael finally got the hang of his seated flying technique. Despite how ridiculous it looked, the sensation of soaring through the air—sitting or not—was exhilarating. He zoomed around the park, testing his new abilities, before landing back beside Commander Floss, who had watched his antics with patient amusement."You've got potential, Captain Gargle," Floss said, crossing her arms. "But there's much more to this than just flying and transforming. You must be ready for the real fight. The Cavities will be here soon."Michael's grin faded as the weight of his new responsibility settled in. He had gone from a simple reporter to a superhero in a matter of minutes. But now, the fate of Earth was resting on his shoulders."What if I'm not ready?" Michael asked, his voice quiet, doubt creeping in.Floss placed a hand on his shoulder, her expression serious but kind. "No one is ever truly ready for something like this. But the Magic Gargle chose you for a reason. Trust in that. And trust in yourself."Michael nodded, his resolve hardening. "Okay. I'll do it. I'll protect Earth."Floss stepped back, placing her helmet on again. "Then let's begin."As she led him away, Michael floated after her—still sitting—ready to face whatever came next. He was Captain Gargle now. It was time to embrace the minty, fresh-breath power within.---The night sky over the small town seemed darker than usual, a thick cloud cover hiding the stars. Michael—now Captain Gargle—hovered a few feet off the ground in his sitting position, trying to shake off the awkwardness of his flying style. His hands rested on imaginary armrests, and despite the absurdity of his flight stance, he couldn't help but feel the gravity of the situation.Commander Floss walked briskly beside him, her eyes scanning the horizon. She had explained that the Cavities could arrive at any moment, their black, tooth-shaped ships descending from the skies like fangs sinking into the Earth. Michael's heart raced as he tried to mentally prepare himself for the impending battle. He had never been in a real fight before, let alone one against a swarm of alien invaders bent on decaying the planet."Do you feel that?" Floss suddenly asked, her voice tight with tension.Michael frowned, looking around. "Feel what?"Before she could answer, the ground beneath them rumbled, and a distant roar echoed through the air. Michael's eyes widened as he saw dark shapes cutting through the clouds above them—sleek, tooth-like ships with jagged edges and glowing red lights."They're here!" Floss shouted, drawing her laser rifle and pointing toward the sky. "The Cavities!"Michael swallowed hard, feeling the adrenaline surge through his veins. "What do I do?""Fight!" Floss barked, firing at the descending ships. "Remember, you're Captain Gargle now. Use your powers!"Michael nodded, gripping the Magic Gargle vial tightly in his hand. He unscrewed the cap, taking a quick gulp and gargling, the minty liquid fizzing in his mouth."Excuse me po!" he shouted.A rush of energy surged through him as his body glowed with blue light. His suit shimmered, and his breath once again carried a wave of freshness. He felt his strength return, the power of the Gargle filling him with confidence.A Cavity drone dropped down from the nearest ship, its black armor glinting menacingly. The creature's mouth was wide open, revealing jagged, decayed teeth that oozed a greenish slime. It let out a guttural snarl as it charged at Michael, swinging a jagged, acid-dripping blade.Instinctively, Michael raised his hand. To his surprise, a bright blue energy blast shot from his palm, hitting the drone square in the chest and sending it flying backward into a tree.He stared at his hand in disbelief. "Whoa... I can shoot minty blasts?""Focus, Captain!" Floss yelled, firing at another drone.Michael snapped back into action, flying—sitting, of course—toward the incoming wave of Cavities. The closer they got, the more he could see the true horror of these creatures. Their eyes were bloodshot, and their skin looked corroded, like it had been eaten away by acid. They moved with an unnatural speed, swarming like locusts."Alright, let's see what else I can do," Michael muttered, narrowing his eyes. He focused on the ground below him, then launched forward in his seated position, zipping through the air with surprising speed. As he flew, he raised both hands and unleashed a barrage of fresh, minty blasts at the incoming drones. Each shot hit its mark, and the drones screeched as they dissolved into a gooey sludge. The mint seemed to neutralize whatever corrosive substance powered them."This... is... AWESOME!" Michael shouted, spinning around in his seated flying form and blasting drones out of the sky. "Take that, Cavities!"-----Commander Floss fought nearby, her movements sharp and precise, but even she couldn't help but glance over at Michael's unique fighting style. He floated just above the treetops, moving with surprising agility, even in his seated pose. His enthusiasm was palpable, but it was clear that he still had much to learn."Michael!" Floss called out, dodging an acid beam from one of the Cavity ships. "Stay focused! You're still outnumbered!"Michael grinned, still riding high on the adrenaline of his newfound powers. "No worries, Commander! I've got this!"But just as he said that, a larger drone—a Cavity Enforcer—emerged from one of the ships. It was at least twice the size of the others, its black armor thicker, and its acidic weaponry more dangerous. It let out a bone-chilling roar as it charged toward Michael, swinging a massive, corroded chain at him.Michael's confidence faltered for a split second. "Uh, okay, maybe not entirely got this."The Enforcer swung its chain, and Michael barely dodged, his seated flying form wobbling as he tried to regain control. He fired a series of energy blasts, but the Enforcer swatted them away with its chain, its red eyes locked on him."Alright, big guy," Michael muttered, trying to sound brave as he zipped backward through the air. "Let's see what you've got."The Enforcer roared and swung the chain again, this time catching Michael's leg as he tried to dodge. The force of the blow knocked him off balance, and for a moment, he was tumbling through the air, completely disoriented. He hit the ground hard, the breath knocked out of him. His vision blurred for a moment, and the vial of Magic Gargle rolled out of his hand, coming to a stop just a few feet away. The Enforcer loomed over him, its massive form casting a shadow across the ground. It raised its weapon, ready to strike.Michael's heart pounded in his chest. He scrambled for the Magic Gargle, his fingers brushing against the cool glass. Just as the Enforcer brought its chain down, Michael gargled the liquid and shouted, "Excuse me po!"In a flash, his powers returned. He shot upward in his seated position, narrowly avoiding the Enforcer's strike. His body glowed with fresh energy, and his mind cleared."Alright," Michael said, his voice filled with newfound determination. "No more playing around."He raised both hands, channeling all the power of the Gargle into a single blast. A beam of minty, blue energy shot from his palms, hitting the Enforcer square in the chest. The creature screeched as the minty freshness overwhelmed it, dissolving its armor and turning it into a harmless puff of vapor.Michael hovered in the air, breathing heavily but victorious. "Wow," he muttered, wiping his brow. "That was intense."Floss landed beside him, her eyes gleaming with approval. "Well done, Captain. You're learning quickly."Michael grinned, still sitting in midair. "Thanks. Though, uh, I think I need a bit more practice with this flying thing."Floss chuckled softly. "Indeed. But you did well for your first battle."----As Michael and Floss stood together, surveying the battlefield, the remaining Cavity drones screeched and fled, retreating back to their ships. The sky seemed to clear, and the oppressive darkness lifted as the ships disappeared into the clouds.Floss lowered her weapon, her gaze never leaving the horizon. "This was just the first wave. They'll be back, and they'll bring something far worse."Michael landed awkwardly, stumbling a bit as he touched the ground. "Worse than that Enforcer?"Floss nodded grimly. "General Blaguda, the leader of the Cavities. She won't stop until Earth is decayed, just like Planet Gargle."Michael's stomach churned at the thought. "Great. No pressure."Floss placed a hand on his shoulder, her expression serious but supportive. "You have the power to stop them, Michael. You're Captain Gargle now. But you can't do it alone. We need to find others—those who can help us in this fight."Michael looked at her, uncertainty clouding his face. "Others? Like, more superheroes?""Not exactly," Floss said, her voice quiet but firm. "Champions. Earth's best defenders, wherever they might be. You may be the key to stopping the Cavities, but we'll need every bit of strength and courage we can gather."Michael took a deep breath, the weight of his new role settling on him. "Alright. Let's find them. Let's save Earth."Floss nodded, stepping back as Michael straightened up. "It's time, Captain Gargle. The real battle is about to begin."Michael couldn't help but crack a small grin. "And here I thought being a reporter was going to be the most exciting thing in my life."Floss smiled too, though her expression remained serious. "This is only the beginning."As they turned to leave the battlefield, Michael floated a few feet off the ground again, still seated. He glanced down at himself and sighed."I really need to figure out how to fly standing up."--Michael hovered awkwardly as he and Floss made their way back to the safety of the temporary command post. The battlefield behind them was littered with the remains of defeated Cavity drones, their metallic limbs sparking as they twitched one last time before going completely still. The acrid smell of burning metal and scorched earth clung to the air, but the oppressive darkness had finally lifted, replaced by a calm, eerie silence. For now.Floss walked with purpose, her eyes scanning the horizon as though she expected another wave of enemies at any moment. Her armor, though scratched and battered from the battle, still gleamed under the faint light filtering through the clouds. She looked every bit the warrior she was, unyielding and ready for whatever came next.Michael, however, was still trying to process everything. He had fought his first real battle as Captain Gargle, and somehow, against all odds, they had won. But Floss's words lingered in his mind—this was just the beginning. General Blaguda was coming, and from what Floss had said, she was far more dangerous than anything they had faced so far."You really think we'll find others?" Michael asked, breaking the silence as they neared the makeshift camp.Floss nodded, her silver eyes focused ahead. "I know we will. Earth has defenders, people who may not even know the strength they possess yet. We just have to find them before Blaguda does."Michael floated down to the ground again, landing awkwardly as he tried to keep up with her steady pace. "And how exactly are we going to do that? I mean, where do you even start looking for Earth's hidden champions?"Floss stopped and turned to face him, her expression softer now. "We start by looking for those with heart—people who, like you, may not see themselves as heroes but have the courage to stand against the darkness. They don't have to be perfect. They just have to be willing."Michael nodded, feeling the weight of responsibility settle onto his shoulders once again. "Alright. I'll help you find them.""You're not just helping, Michael. You're leading this fight," Floss said, her voice firm but not unkind. "Captain Gargle isn't just a title. It's a call to protect, to inspire. And you're the one who has to answer that call."Michael swallowed hard, the enormity of what she was asking sinking in. He had never imagined himself as a leader, let alone the defender of Earth. But as he looked at Floss, standing tall and unflinching despite everything they had just faced, he felt a spark of determination rise within him."I won't let you down," he said, his voice steady.Floss smiled, though there was still a hint of sadness in her eyes. "I know you won't."They reached the edge of the camp, where a few remaining Earth soldiers—those who had survived the first wave of the Cavity invasion—were tending to the wounded and repairing what little equipment they had left. The mood was grim, but there was a flicker of hope in the air now that the immediate threat had passed.Michael looked around at the faces of the soldiers, the fear and exhaustion etched into their expressions. These were people who hadn't asked for this fight, but they were in it now. Just like him."Do you really think we have a chance?" he asked quietly.Floss turned to him, her gaze unwavering. "I know we do. But it won't be easy. Blaguda will come with everything she has, and she won't show mercy."Michael nodded, clenching his fists. "Then we'll be ready."Floss placed a hand on his shoulder. "There's something else you need to understand, Michael. This fight—it's not just about strength or power. It's about belief. If you believe in yourself, in your team, and in this world, then you'll have the strength to face whatever comes."Michael looked up at her, meeting her steady gaze. For the first time since this all began, he felt a sense of calm wash over him. It wasn't the absence of fear—no, that was still very much there—but it was an acceptance of what he had to do."I believe," he said simply.Floss's smile widened, and she gave him a small nod. "Good. Because the world needs a leader who does."They stood there for a moment, the wind rustling through the trees around them, carrying with it the quiet anticipation of battles yet to come. Michael could feel the weight of destiny settling on his shoulders, but for the first time, he didn't feel crushed by it. Instead, he felt a sense of purpose, a drive to protect the people he cared about and the world that still had so much beauty worth saving. As he glanced back at the horizon, where the Cavity ships had retreated, he knew they would come again—and when they did, he would be ready."Let's start looking for these champions," Michael said, his voice stronger now.Floss gave a sharp nod. "We will. But first, you need to rest. We both do. The battle ahead will be long, and we'll need every ounce of strength we have."Michael couldn't argue with that. He felt the exhaustion creeping up on him, the adrenaline from the fight finally wearing off. He sighed, casting one last look at the battlefield, then turned to follow Floss into the heart of the camp.As they walked, he hovered slightly off the ground again, still seated in his invisible chair. He glanced down at himself and sighed in frustration. "I really need to figure out how to fly standing up," he muttered.Floss chuckled, her voice light for the first time since the battle ended. "You'll get the hang of it. But I'd say you did pretty well for your first day as Captain Gargle."Michael grinned, despite everything. "Yeah, I guess I did."The two of them walked together into the twilight, the weight of their mission hanging heavy in the air, but now there was hope—fragile, but real. They had survived the first wave. Now, they just had to find the others, the hidden defenders who would stand beside them in the final battle for Earth. And when General Blaguda came, they would be ready.End of Chapter
