Clink!
The blade flew into the air as Christie fell to the ground. I tackled her.
It wasn't a dramatic tackle, no — nothing like the movies. I felt the anger rush through me. I can't watch anyone else die.
"You asshole!" She exclaimed in anger. "Let me go! I'm doing what needs to be done!"
She fought underneath me as I kept her pinned down. Her fist met my face a couple times but I refused to let go.
As the days rolled by, I began to wonder if Christie's safe to be around. Andy's shown he's just a timid, young guy who has no idea how to keep himself safe. Christie seems to be more of a threat than he is.
Maybe someday we'll have stability again. I tell myself that everyday. Sometimes it's hard to believe.

As time went on, we started to build the rv up by reinforcing the outside. I've been adding things to the inside and preparing it so that we can live in the mobile home if necessary. We've had some zombies banging against the fence but nothing like what we had at the farm.
The more time we spend out here, the more convinced I become that everything is gone. If the government was going to save us, they would have by now. It's become clear we're on our own.
"I've been thinkin'," Vick began to explain. "It'd be good to do some enforcing to the walls. Maybe dig a trench around the perimeter to make it harder for the zoms to do damage to the fence."
"How long you think that'll take?" I questioned preposterously. "With only five of us we'd damn near keel over trying to do something like that."
Kara added, "That's not a bad idea. If we made it deep enough, they wouldn't be able to get out. Could probably get some shovels from the department store."
"Got some cucumbers lettuce and carrots from the garden. Store them in the rv for now." Vick offered me the basket full of his harvest.
As I shuffled to the rv, something caught my eye. There was movement in the sky nearby. Soon, I was hearing the buzz of a helicopter.
"Holy shit! Vick, do you see that?" Kara cheered, "maybe they're here to help!"
I stared the helicopter down. Courtney and Kara began to wave their arms in the air in an attempt to get the occupant's attention. Their attempts were not met with success. The helicopter flew right over us and continued to it's unknown destination.
"We have to follow it." Vick concluded firmly. "They could be going to help a camp or their people. Maybe they can help us."
"Vick, I think it was a military copter and it went toward the city." I interrupted, "we can't take that chance. There's nothing left in the cities."
"What if they can help us? They could be our ticket out of here. If not, maybe they know somebody."
I turned to meet his gaze. "Do you really think so, Vick?"
He nodded solemnly, essentially giving me a little bit more hope.
It's time for us to get the Hell out of this nightmare.
The ride there felt long due to the anticipation. What if they really are here to come take us away from this nightmare? Did we really survive the end of the world?
"Did either of you see where it landed?" I questioned into the walkie talkie as I drove.
"No," Vick responded through the small staticky box. "Don't know if it even landed."
I now was in the suburban with Andy. The girls are riding with Vick in the mobile home that traveled the path in front of us. I know they'll be safe with him.
"You really think there's a Superman flying in a helicopter out here saving people?" Andy asked snidely. "C'mon."
"Regardless of who it is, they're living. That's all that matters." I argued firmly. "Don't you think it's worth a shot?"
"We could be following them right into a death trap."
I peaked into my rearview mirror. Zombies now shuffled toward the noise of the helicopter that flew over head. They didn't even seem interested in us.
"We'd better hope not. Got an army of zoms following us. It's a one way trip from here."
Going back the way we came would be Hell. I've never been a religious person but I prayed that this would be our ticket to getting our lives back.
"I don't even see the helicopter anymore." Andy commented, "we've lost track. It's probably a state over by now."
We fought our way through the zombies though most of them attempted to get inside the vehicles. We had to maneuver around them slow and avoid running any over.
Just as we entered the city, we began to hear planes over head. I let out a sigh of relief. Is this really over?
Boom!
The ground shook beneath the vehicle. Smoke immediately pierced through the air.
"Fuck! Are they bombing the place?" Andy began to panic. "We gotta get out of here, man!"
Before I could respond, I was interrupted.
Boom!
"Jake? Jake, are you there? We can't turn back. Vick said we'll have to go into the city."
Kara's voice came through the speaker on the walkie talkie I had clipped to my collar.
I questioned, "Go into the city? Where they're dropping bombs?"
More zombies than I could count now surrounded our vehicles. I knew the girls and Vick would be safe in the rv for now. The suburban shook as the wave of zombies crashed into it.
"We have no choice. It's that or be eaten alive."
We slowly moved into the city and the infected ones followed. It was almost as if we moved with them, like we were part of their group. It sent chills up my spine.
The bombs continued, drawing more zombies from different directions. Eventually, we were surrounded.
Boom!
In the distance, a tower collapsed due to the bombs. I hoped that it would draw the zombies away. I was wrong.
"Kara?" I spoke into the walkie talkie. "We have to do something. They're going to break into the vehicles eventually."
Clunk.
Bang!
Clunk.
The sound of zombies banging against the vehicle filled the air. Andy began to rock back and forth in a panic. I started to say my prayers. As my gaze shifted to the ceiling above, I got an idea.
"The sunroof," I exclaimed into the walkie talkie. "We can get on top of the suburban."
"Why would you do that?" Kara voiced through static. "Jake, stay inside. We're going to figure this out."
Without responding, I climbed through the ceiling and onto the top of the vehicle. I skimmed my surroundings, suddenly getting chills up my spine.
There's hundreds.
"Shit," I stomped my foot in anger. "How the Hell do we make it out of this alive?"
"We don't." Andy commented, climbing to the top of the suburban to stand near me. "Look how many there are. You're better off shooting yourself."
Black smoke floated up to the sky in the distance. The tower that was struck is now on fire.
Shit. The bombs. We have to go before they drop more.
I questioned, "You don't think there's even a chance?"
Maybe he's right. I could shoot myself and fall into the crowd of zombies. It'd give the others enough time to flee.
"Nope. I always knew it'd end this way. You can't escape these fuckin' monsters."
My gaze shifted to Andy. If I pushed him into the crowd, maybe we'd have a chance. Maybe we'd all make it out alive.
With the exception of Andy.
"Jake?" Kara's voice once again came through the walkie talkie. "Get off of the roof. Vick thinks he found a way —"
"No," I interrupted, speaking into the small radio. "I found a way."
My eyes met Andy's as I turned in his direction.
